World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

No, not "who cares if the ref blows calls in the opponent's favor?", more like "the refs favor you 95% of the time so you sound ridiculous when you complain that they don't."

Again... I am by no means a Liverpool fan... but did you see the game vs Pompey today? At what point did "95% of the calls" go Liverpool's way? The Mascherano straight red on something that should barely have rated a yellow?

The 95% line is a good one, though. Fulham got screwed today vs Man Utd, too, right? Funny how the 95% of the calls going to Man Utd didn't seem to help net them any goals. Those are the breaks, I guess. :p

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

The Mascherano red was less of a card worthy incident than the Wigan tackle that almost broke Steven Gerrard in half on Wednesday which didn't even get a ****ing card.

You can keep pretending like Liverpool gets all the calls jmh just like all the big 4.

We have more ridiculous **** happen with us than just about any team in the league, for us and against us.

And jmh complains...the same season Liverpool got two dubious red cards in the same game against his club, one where Carragher got the ball and the second where Degan got a red for basically a simple foul. Talking out of your gigantic posterior, which is par for the course with you jmh.

Shouldn't it really be the big 3? Its not like Liverpool has ever won the league. Unless you are referring to Blackburn as the 4th.

Man Utd: 11
Chelsea: 2
Arsenal: 3
Blackburn: 1

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Mark Hughes is out at Man City. Roberto Mancini will replace him.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

CL Round of 16 draw has a few interesting matchups:

VfB Stuttgart v Barcelona

Olympiakos v Bordeaux

Internazionale v Chelsea (Jose meets his old club)

Bayern Munich v Fiorentina (At least one German club has a prayer...)

CSKA Moscow v Sevilla FC

Lyon v Real Madrid

FC Porto v Arsenal

AC Milan v Manchester United (Welcome back to Old Trafford, Becks!)

LOVE this draw!!!!! Could not be better...

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I'll try to fill in for him :p

Liverpool should have had the lead through Torres. Pompey got away with offsides on the first goal and the red card was a joke. In the second half the lads played like petulant schoolboys and still almost scored before conceding a second goal in the dying minutes.

The officiating was horrible!

;)

jmh.... you listening to this?!! :p :)

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Figures, the one time we get Hull on tv over hear and no Jozy, even on the bench.

Doubt it would have mattered a bit... Diaby delivers a sublime finish and now it is 3-0 to the Arsenal with 10 minutes to play. Oh, and Hull had a ridiculous penalty call go in their favor in this one at 56 minutes but Almunia guessed correctly and dove to his right to save the shot from Geovanni.

Yeah, I didn't really care about the result at all, I root against Arsenal as one of the Big 4, of course, but I was hoping to see Altidore.

Good penalty stoppers don't guess.

I don't know if Almunia is a guesser or not, but it's a personal peeve that everyone talks about the keeper "guessing" regardless of how good a penalty stopper they are. The good ones get to way too many to be guessing. (Consider, as one example, the MLS Cup Final between NER and HOU that went to KFTM. Reis and Onstad went the right direction every single time. Those guys aren't guessing.)

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Some goalies are so confident in their lateral movement reaction time that they don't guess, they can wait until almost the last moment before diving for the penalty.

Some goalies aren't as gifted and HAVE to guess as the ball is struck to have any chance at stopping anything within a meter of the post.

Those were both clear reds, AND Carragher's past-his-prime *** had gotten away with a foul that should've been a penalty before he was rightfully sent off. Carragher dragged Zamora down AGAIN and Degen could've broken a leg with the tackle he was sent off for. Did you even watch that game? I can only assume you must not have given how little idea you seem to have what happened. Don't blame the refs for the fact that Liverpool is falling apart this season.

Yeah. I get that. HC is not on a lot and getting a shot to see Jozy play would have been cool.

Craig, perhaps, but you have to admit that it is not like the goalkeeper has a lot of time to wait to see which way the kick is going to go. Almunia DEFINITELY guesses. I have watched nearly every Arsenal game for the last 5 yrs... and certainly all of Almunia's. He dives to his right 90% of the time. Hell, if I were taking a penalty, I would drive it right down the middle. The goalkeeper will always dive at least one direction.

But who's to say? Maybe a guy knows the tendencies of the top shooters on the other team? Maybe a guy looks for something that tips him as to which way the shooter will be going? (I tend to think that this is probably the most common way to tell which way a shooter will go.... as he plants his off-foot he might well telegraph which direction the kick will be going).

Of course there will be goalkeepers who are better at stopping penalties than others. Sorensen of Stoke City is excellent. Green at West Ham has been good in the past. Almunia at Arsenal is above average, but I would not say he is excellent.

Good stuff... .I love talking about the intracacies of the game like this.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Keep it quiet but the Villains are having a good go of it recently, some real tests coming up. Hopefully Heskey and Young are ok.

I watched the game live. Carragher got the ball before the man on the foul he was sent off for. Maybe he should have been sent off for the foul before that, but he wasn't.

Degen's tackle was mistimed and he didn't break a leg, have his studs up, or make a recklessly dangerous challenge. Any tackle can potentially break a leg but that's not the standard for a red card. And again this is to refute your retarded belief that the top 4 get so many more calls than your poor woe-is-me Fulham side.

You're full of crap.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Are any of you (currently) certified officials watching the West Ham-Chelsea match? I let my certification lapse a few years ago, but the announcers just criticized an offsides call that I think the linesman got right.

Cech was off his line, Terry behind him on the line. West Ham played the ball to a player standing between Cech and Terry. The linesman flagged for offsides. If I remember the reading of the offsides rule, it is actually worded as the last two players (usually including the goalkeeper, but not necessarily), not solely the last field player. Am I right there?

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Joke penalty.

99% of the time ARs say nothing about penalties and what a surprise when one finally does, after probably swallowing his tongue 1000s of times he decides to call a penalty that isn't one.

Shocking that it also goes Chelsea's way.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I watch the EPL Review Show every Sunday night and Bobby Zamora of Fulham really caught my eye with his performance against Manchester United...how old is he? Is he a rising star?
