World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

I think every fan feels that way about his/her team....
Yes, but the difference is that Big Four fans sound particularly absurd when they whine about officiating.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

More uncharted territory for Roy and Fulham. Sweet. :D

Interesting... so the better the team, the less beef one should potentially have with the refs (or you will sound "absurd" voicing that displeasure)? Whoah.... Sorta like "screw you, good teams, you are already good, who cares if the ref blows calls in the opponent's favor? You are already meant to be better so shut up, suck it up, and just deal with it. Oh, but when we "lesser teams" get screwed, we will be sure to let everyone know and, because we are worse, you have to sit and list to us." LOL! Good one, jmh.

Oh... and just to be clear..... TBA was upset about a call in the Liverpool-Arsenal game (two Big Four teams). So.... by your assertion NEITHER of us should have any problems with the officiating when we play each other (and if we do, we should not voice our opinion here)? Not buying it. Sorry. And, despite my slight disagreement with TBA on this one, I see his point as valid and certainly won't begrudge him his shot here to voice his frustration about that call and the game, in general.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Final score~~~~ Burnley 1, Arsenal 1.... Arsenal fan frustration level watching the second half: 10 out of 10.

No, not "who cares if the ref blows calls in the opponent's favor?", more like "the refs favor you 95% of the time so you sound ridiculous when you complain that they don't."

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

LA agrees with Donovan on a 4 year extension through 2013, and agree to allow him to play for foreign teams on short term loan.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

So, does anyone know where the heck Red Bull Salzburg came from? (I mean, Austria, but figuratively.) They swept (as in, 6 wins, 0 losses, 0 ties) a group in the Europa League that had Lazio and Villarreal in it, from the position of being (by UEFA coefficient) the fourth weakest team in the weakest pot of the draw for the group stages.

Lazio sucks.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

Lazio sucks.
Perhaps, but even so it seems odd that one of the teams that was (nominally) the weakest in its group should be the only team out of the 12 groups to pick up all 18 points. Werder Bremen had 16, Fenerbahce and Benfica 15, but Bremen and Benfica were from the strongest pot of teams (Bremen the strongest team in the entirety of the group stage by UEFA coefficients) and Fenerbahce was just barely below the cusp between the first and second pots. On the flip side no other team from the weakest pot picked up more than 7 points, and Red Bull was (as one might guess) the only Pot 4 team to advance from the group stage.

Interestingly (to me, anyway), by UEFA coefficients, that makes Fulham the second weakest team to advance, having been ranked as the weakest team in pot 3 and drawn with the 4th strongest team in pot 1 (Roma), the 2nd strongest team in pot 2 (Basel), and the strongest team in pot 4 (CSKA Sofia).

Some details on the Charlie Davies crash:

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/crime-scene/del-quentin-wilber/driver-in-fatal-crash-told-pol.html

A U.S. Park Police detective wrote in the court papers that the driver told police that she drank alcohol before the crash and officers smelled alcohol on her breath. The driver, Davies and Roberta were last seen about an hour before the accident at a D.C. establishment that serves alcohol, the detective added.

The court documents were filed in the District’s federal court seeking permission from a judge to allow investigators to analyze an airbag sensor and GPS unit that were in the car, a 2004 Infiniti FX35

In the court papers, detectives said the driver told officers that she was making an adjustment to her GPS unit when Roberta yelled, “Watch out!”

The driver swerved to the right and struck the guard rail, police said.

Police found no evidence of braking before the crash and a 113-foot tire rut in a grassy area leading to the guard rail, Powers wrote.

The detective added that investigators believe the car was going faster than the 40 mph speed limit.

So, they don't know how fast they were going, but they were certainly going faster than the speed limit and didn't touch the brakes before impact.

Having driven that stretch of road before, it's horrendously confusing. It dates back to the old days of parkways, before the interstate highway system, when the idea was for a pleasurable drive through a nice park setting. Today it's used as a commuter road, the signage around there sucks, and there are a bunch of highways that all converge in a very confusing fashion. The old road's geometry makes for rather sharp and unexpected curves in many places (hence the low speed limit) but people still drive it like it's an interstate with a 65-70 mph design speed.

I'm curious as to how much of a factor alcohol played, because that stretch of road is a real pain, no matter what. At the same time, that kind of road is the type where even a minor impairment can lead to something like this.

I hope Charlie's recovery is going well.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!

CL Round of 16 draw has a few interesting matchups:

VfB Stuttgart v Barcelona

Olympiakos v Bordeaux

Internazionale v Chelsea (Jose meets his old club)

Bayern Munich v Fiorentina (At least one German club has a prayer...)

CSKA Moscow v Sevilla FC

Lyon v Real Madrid

FC Porto v Arsenal

AC Milan v Manchester United (Welcome back to Old Trafford, Becks!)

I'll try to fill in for him :p

Liverpool should have had the lead through Torres. Pompey got away with offsides on the first goal and the red card was a joke. In the second half the lads played like petulant schoolboys and still almost scored before conceding a second goal in the dying minutes.

The officiating was horrible!

;)

I'm not waking up before 5 AM to watch this ****ty team. I already waste my Friday and Saturday nights listening to a hockey team with no desire, why wake up before 5 AM to watch a football team with no desire.

Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!
