Re: World Soccer XI: To South Africa, and Beyond!
Howard Webb is terrible. You won't see a more obvious penalty than that.
Besides that Arsenal bossed the second half and even if they didn't get that OG from that idiot Glen Johnson, I bet they would have won.
TBA... a few things... first, the Gerrard non-penalty was pretty 50/50... I would not have been upset had it been given, but I have seen worse let go this season. Still, that was early enough in the game that it should not have mattered to Liverpool with regard to their style and run of play the rest of the game (it was 0-0 at the time). I would basically call it unfortunate for Liverpool, but hardly did it cost them the game.
Second, if not for Almunia's dumba ss punch of the ball right to Kuyt in the 8 yds out, Liverpool would have had 0 goals on the day. That was a gifted goal to the Reds. The play I was shocked at was when Torres missed on the 2-on-1 rush in the first half. He should have done better. A relatively weak one-timed shot? My.... not good.
Arsenal rarely challenged in the first half (they had one shot in the first half according to FSC, but I will be dam ned if I could remember it). Wenger realized that they had to press more and make Liverpool work hard defensively in the second half. Before the Johnson OG (obviously very unlucky for Johnson), Arsenal had been working up to the goal nicely with plenty of possession and a few chances. At least they were making Reina actually break a sweat.
The Arshavin goal was pure class. He freed himself and fired from just inside the 18 and Reina had no chance. That is 5 goals scored for him at Anfield in the last two games there. The man is money.
Arsenal 2-1 is probably a pretty just scoreline based on the run of play all game long by both sides. It would be hard to justify that Liverpool should have won the game.
