World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

BTW, if you folks missed it over the weekend... check out the highlights from Lyon v. Marseilles. It was pretty much the mother of all barn-burners.
Wow, you don't see that kind of scoreline much in France - let alone when the keepers are the two guys who are likely to play most of the matches for the French national team for the next 15 years.

Also, how did I miss what happened to Madrid recently? They got knocked out of the Copa del Rey by Second Division B club AD Alcorcon - and not only that, but a mostly full-strength team including Benzema, Raul, van der Vaart and Guti got hammered 4-0 in the away leg. And it's not like they had to travel to some remote Basque mountain town, Alcorcon is an inner-ring suburb of Madrid! That's like Arsenal going to Barnet and getting thrashed in the third round of the FA Cup. I mean upsets happen in cup competitions, but not usually hammerings like this. Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch of Galacticos, as far as I'm concerned. :D

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

The final aggregate of the Real - Alcorcon tie was 1-4. The Galacticos only got one goal back in the Bernabeu. I'll join jmh in pointing and laughing. :D

Nate Silver (the stats guy at baseball prospectus and 538.com) brings us an ESPN sponsored version of the BCS, but this time with an actual playoff attached!

http://espn.go.com/soccer/spi/rankings

Interesting stuff. These rankings are geared towards predicting future success at the World Cup. Most importantly, we're currently ahead of Mexico.

I'd be interested in comparing his rankings to Voros McCracken's (Voros has intermittently published them in blogs and occasionally references them in BigSoccer posts). Considering their similar backgrounds, I would expect their rankings to be similar as well.

Edit: Having read his methodology, Silver's is a LOT more detailed. Voros just does ratings based on past NT games and doesn't try to judge "seriousness" based on lineups.

I was about to post that myself.

I love it. Soccer is a sport that's hard to quantify, and I love reading about Silver's methodology to do so. Very interesting. I'd love to see his worldwide club ratings (that he necessarily should be able to put together, based on his individual player ratings, etc). That would be one fun database to look at.

He not only is able to do worldwide club ratings, he's able to do a combined club/country ranking.

Some rough equivalencies between club and international teams, based on results through July 2009, are as follows:

Brazil <> FC Barcelona

Germany <> Chelsea

USA <> FC Porto

Sweden <> Tottenham Hotspur

Bolivia <> Sunderland

Tanzania <> Derby County

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Anyone watching the MLS western conference finals? 19th minute and the Home Depot lights went out.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

It must have been a lengthy delay... I just turned it on this minute and they're playing... but it's still just the 19th minute.

Thanks for the reminder that it was on at all... the late starts out west this season just gives me more time to forget there's a game on at all. Thanks MLS/ESPN.

It was about a 15 minute delay.

I've been watching most of the game and have to say I'm a bit impressed with the overall level of play so far in this game. I don't watch a lot of MLS these days, but it seems as if there's been a step up in regards to tactics, passing and shooting compared to what I seem to recall. Probably in no way compares to Europe but this game has been crisp and entertaining.

btw - I'd be curious to hear what a the average Euro thinks about the American playoff system versus having a winner determined at the end of a table.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

It will have to be a hell of a finish to make anything but the rolling blackouts the lead story on this game.

Teams in California should really text the powers-that-be of their electric utilities and just leave a quick "We're on nat'l TV 2nite. Leave lites on. K thx bye" message before something like this happens.

Yeah, there would be an uproar if this was during a Dodgers/Angels/Lakers playoff game.

E$PN had to show the college football game first.
