I think there are more American fans in attendance than Slovaks.

England-Brazil friendly at noon.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Greece-Ukraine finishes 0-0. Egypt scores in injury time to make it 2-0. Algeria must now play Egypt one more time in a playoff in Sudan.

Mighty New Zealand has just qualified for the World Cup. Heres hoping we somehow get in a group with them and South Africa as the seeded team.

Minus Australia, OFC really should only have a quarter of a slot instead of half. New Zealand beat up on the tiny island nations of OFC and then defeated... the tiny island nation of Bahrain, 1-0, to grab a World Cup slot. Srsly?

Yeah, the best proposal I've seen is having the OFC winner get a berth in the last round of Asian qualifying instead. They'd have to qualify over 8-10 games against teams that are made up of actual professional soccer players.

That might work. Either that, or give another confederation a quarter slot, and the rest of it go to a 3rd confederation the way they did in '94 (OFC got 0.25, CONCACAF got 0.25, and CONMEBOL got 0.5).

Here's how New Zealand got to South Africa.
Automatic bye to final round of 4
Beat Fiji 2-0
Beat Vanuatu 2-1
Beat Vanuatu 4-1
Beat New Caledonia 3-1
Beat New Caledonia 3-0
Lost to Fiji 2-0 (meaningless game, they'd already clinched the OFC-AFC playoff by then, they played scrubs)
Tied Bahrain 0-0
Beat Bahrain 1-0

8 games against 4 tiny countries. Bahrain was the toughest team they played at 61st in the world according to the FIFA World Rankings. They're 83rd. The others are 108th, 141st, and 159th right now.

EDIT: Let's frame this a different way. NONE of the final round teams from CONCACAF are ranked below New Zealand. Not even T&T or El Salvador.

Russia won 2-1 over Slovenia, but a 1-0 win for Slovenia at home will have them go on on away goals.

that sounds reasonable... probably why it won't happen. :p

I can't imagine, with limited knowledge, that the kiwis would go through if the opponents were say, Iran... then again Bahrain beat the Saudis to get there so who knows.

Now then, I cannot confirm this, repeat, cannot confirm this but according to MFBorman on Twitter, Dutch TV are reporting that Robin van Persie will be out for two to three months with torn ankle ligaments.

From bbc.

Ouch for Arsenal.

Yeah the .25 bid also works. Theres always the nuclear option of simply folding OFC into Asia.

Patman, I agree with what you're saying here. I'm hardly an expert on Asian soccer but from what I understand New Zealand did luck out by getting Bahrain. I think they beat the Saudis on two late late goals.

UEFA World Cup Playoff Results?

Portugal 1-0 win over Bosnia at home.
Russia 2-1 win over Slovenia at home.
France 1-0 win over Ireland away.
Greece and Ukraine were scoreless in Greece.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Ah crap, van Persie's injury is bad news for my fantasy team.

Re: World Soccer X: Duh, duh, duh, duh...The Champions!

Anyone else see that the backup kicker for Ohio State (who kicked the OT winner against Iowa today) is an MLS washout who played on several US youth teams?

Gotta assume that they would go through against Iran, considering that Iran didn't even qualify for a playoff spot in AFC.
