Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I agree with JohnN that it would be more fun to follow a team that's on American TV. Due to various travels while studying in Sweden, my teams are Valerenga IF (Oslo), Osters IF (Vaxjo, Sweden), and Ajax. Obviously I can only really check the standings for all of them and only Ajax has much of their website in English. A team I could watch regularly would be easier to get truly excited about.

I realize they're not in the Premier League anymore, but after DC's friendly with Portsmouth last night, I can feel good about rooting for those guys.

It was a blistering hot night, ugly game, Pompey lost their luggage in Chicago and thus were playing in DCU warm-ups, they barely have enough numbers to field a full 11, etc.

DC wins 4-0, but at the end of the game some Pompey supporters started a conga line and headed over to the DC supporters sections - it was all very good-natured and overall a fun experience.

Now, if only DC can translate that into a game that actually matters.

If you are willing to pay for the channels (FSC, Setanta, Sky, ESPN, etc.) you can see a lot of teams from all of the big leagues. Which would give you more rooting choices.

Last year it seemed like I could watch 3/4ths of Blackburns matches.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

You know, if Citeh wants to throw 24 million pounds at them for James Milner, I say go for it.

How many players in the world are really worth 24M quid? And is James Milner really one of them?

Villa's crapped out in March and April the last two years not because they didn't have one big talisman, but because they didn't have the depth of solid role players. This team needs four good guys for 5M apiece a lot more than it needs one James Milner.

And that's why Al-Citeh will always be behind United. I can understand going overboard on a guy like Kaka or Ronaldinho, but James Milner? He's a nice player, but Citeh has been notorious for overpaying. Look at the late 70s and early 80s when Malcolm Allison was in charge. The Citizens think they get the signing to win the title and they underperform. They kind of remind me of the Mets. (Without the 69 or 86 title.)

I see the Newcastle plays United in their respective opener. If I had some quid, I'd bet on a Geordie draw because United always seems to take the first game of the year off for some reason.

New York 1-0 Man City 7'

Of course, Man City has a pretty no name lineup excepting Bridge, Adebayor, Jo. The goal was scored when Dane Richards toasted Bridge and found Kandji with a cross.

Earlier, Spurs drew Sporting 2-2.

Insert your own Wayne Bridge getting played joke here.

I think James Milner will be this years Joleon Lescott, someone who is a decent player but nowhere near worth the price City pay.

It will be very interesting to see what City do with their roster in the next couple of weeks, they basically have to get rid of a dozen senior players to get their roster under the new 25 player limit.

That seems to be the story the media is pushing, however, it's pretty much a lot of hyperbole.
For example, look at a prospective 25 man squad for City:
1. Given
2. Hart (Club)
3. Taylor (HG)
4. Boateng
5. Richards (Club)
6. Zabaleta
7. Onuoha (Club)
8. K. Toure
9. Lescott (HG)
10. Kompany
11. Robinho
12. Kolarov
13. Bridge (HG)
14. Y. Toure
15. De Jong
16. Barry (HG)
17. Ireland (Club)
18. Vieira
19. M. Johnson (Club)
20. A. Johnson (HG)
21. SWP (Club)
22. Silva
23. Bellamy (HG)
24. Tevez
25. Adebayor

So, that leaves players like Javier Garrido, Shaleum Logan, Kelvin Etuhu, Felipie Caicedo, and Jo needing to be sold. Hardly a fire sale.
Edit: Roque Santa Cruz as well. But I don't think you'll find anyone shedding any tears over that.

Why is Vieira still considered for the team? Isn't he like 100 yrs old now?

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Here's to the the Magpies returning to (ok I realize it's all relative) glory!

It'd be fun if they did. The year the were relegated was such a freaking mess. Bringing in Shearer to coach to inspire them backfired miserably. I hope the year away in the Championship got the team to snap out of it a bit.

They just made up that story about the lost luggage. The truth is someone offered them 300 pounds for their kits and the bankruptcy court accepted the offer.

I'm watching a pretty entertaining game between Colorado and Seattle. Hope the second half is as fun as the first.

I strained my quad playing a pick-up game tonight. I hope I can walk tomorrow. :(

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

You know, I'm a bit disappointed that Red Cloud didn't comment about Fenway being destroyed...

Didn't see the need, since it would probably be an improvement.

Anyway, here's the story on why I'm a passive Man City supporter. I first started pulling for City during the 1998-99 season - when they were in the third tier (at the time, League Two).

At the time I was just learning about European soccer and was intrigued by the promotion/relegation system. So I started to learn a little bit about the teams in other tiers, looking for teams that were usually good but had been relegated. Man City at the time was an extreme case - they weren't just relegated once, they were relegated twice despite being a fairly historical team. So I started rooting for them, hoping to see them return from the depths to their former glory. It's close, but no cigar. Saw them in person for the first time yesterday.

Other teams that interest me for various reasons are Wigan (they were promoted from League Two in the same year as Man City) and Cheltenham Town (I became interested in them when they were trying to promote from Conference). Recently have become interested in Nottingham Forest, Derby County, and Leeds United for much the same reason I started paying attention to Man City (and because all three teams featured prominently in "The Damned United").

The "Big Four" bore me. I don't despise them or really hate them per se, they just make me yawn - same teams on top, every year. Boring. The only team I truly dislike is Gillingham, and that spurs from my early Man City fandom. City beat the Gills in the League Two playoff to win promotion, and they did it in impressive style, scoring twice in the last two minutes to tie the game and won promotion on penalties, but it was what Tony Pulis, then the Gillingham manager, said before the game that irked me. Basically, he talked about how Man City were once great but were no longer an important team. For that reason I smile when I watch Gillingham bounce between League One and League Two (they just got relegated to League Two again) while City reaches for Europe. Pulis is now at the helm at Stoke, so I don't mind watching them lose either.

I follow Roma in Serie A but not overly closely. I do actively dislike Juventus.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

It looks Laurent Blanc is leaving everyone that was on the French World Cup roster off for the next friendly. I may not like France, but I always respected Blanc because he played an "Anti-French" style. He was hardnosed and tough.

That was actually reported on ESPN the other night...saw it while I was at the bar.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Blanc seems like he's going to be no-nonsense unlike French Jack McCoy. (Domenich totally looks like him.) I do think you'll see Lloris, Ribery and certain others get back on, but it was the right move to leave everyone off for their first friendly.

A bunch of the younger guys (Lloris and Mandanda, Gourcuff and Toulalan and Diaby and Gignac) are going to have to be brought back into the fold sooner or later if they don't want to shoot themselves in the foot for WC2014 (and even Euro 2012), but I think some of the veterans (Anelka obviously, Henry, Abidal, Malouda, Govou) will not see another callup. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Evra (the captain probably has to bear some responsibility for the out-of-control team) and Ribery (who seems to be the source of a lot of the strife within the team, particularly involving Gourcuff who I think has to be considered a key member of the team going forward).

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Lots of respect for what Blanc is trying to do, but I don't think any of the French 23 will be too disappointed to miss out on a meaningless trip to Norway.
