Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!
You know, I'm a bit disappointed that Red Cloud didn't comment about Fenway being destroyed...
Didn't see the need, since it would probably be an improvement.
Anyway, here's the story on why I'm a passive Man City supporter. I first started pulling for City during the 1998-99 season - when they were in the third tier (at the time, League Two).
At the time I was just learning about European soccer and was intrigued by the promotion/relegation system. So I started to learn a little bit about the teams in other tiers, looking for teams that were usually good but had been relegated. Man City at the time was an extreme case - they weren't just relegated once, they were relegated twice despite being a fairly historical team. So I started rooting for them, hoping to see them return from the depths to their former glory. It's close, but no cigar. Saw them in person for the first time yesterday.
Other teams that interest me for various reasons are Wigan (they were promoted from League Two in the same year as Man City) and Cheltenham Town (I became interested in them when they were trying to promote from Conference). Recently have become interested in Nottingham Forest, Derby County, and Leeds United for much the same reason I started paying attention to Man City (and because all three teams featured prominently in "The Damned United").
The "Big Four" bore me. I don't despise them or really hate them per se, they just make me yawn - same teams on top, every year. Boring. The only team I truly dislike is Gillingham, and that spurs from my early Man City fandom. City beat the Gills in the League Two playoff to win promotion, and they did it in impressive style, scoring twice in the last two minutes to tie the game and won promotion on penalties, but it was what Tony Pulis, then the Gillingham manager, said before the game that irked me. Basically, he talked about how Man City were once great but were no longer an important team. For that reason I smile when I watch Gillingham bounce between League One and League Two (they just got relegated to League Two again) while City reaches for Europe. Pulis is now at the helm at Stoke, so I don't mind watching them lose either.
I follow Roma in Serie A but not overly closely. I do actively dislike Juventus.
