Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I'd say I'm a AVFC fan. Have only followed for the last 3 years or so, though.

The story I hear from people closer to the situation is that with City going to CL they want the depth, it is going to be a long year with a lot of matches. Lot of money to spend for depth.

I wish. :) Still in the Europa unfortunately.

Anyways, I understand the idea behind bringing in squad depth, but why waste 24m on Milner?
From a City point of view, Adam Johnson only cost 7m, Vinnie Kompany (our best CB last year imo) only cost 6m, Bellamy cost 14m. If we need depth so badly, go out and scout around and find some good deals like we have done in the past. No need to blow the whole load on Milner.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

jon - can't tell if you were referring to me...I wasn't commenting on SCP's legitimacy...only asking why they were the other half of this match. Certainly Celtic makes sense, they could play anybody and sell 20k seats in the Boston area. I was curious if SCP was brought in because they have a following in the region.
No. Unless you want to be slapped.

Wasn't it supposed to be Rangers?

Yes, but the Red Sox didn't want to a smoldering hole where Fenway Park used to be. The Globe didn't exactly cover themselves in glory by blaming the 1971 Ibrox disaster on the rivalry...

(It also doesn't help that Rangers issued a statement worrying about playing in front all of those "irish people" - as if we're all IRA supporters in Boston who were going to blow them up. We might run a few over, but that's only because we suck at driving. It was a bad idea...)

Good god, does City realize that you don't spell "Xavi" "James Milner?" It's James freaking Milner!!!! Is Villa only waiting to accept this because they haven't stopped giggling yet? That's $37,000,000!!!!!! FOR JAMES MILNER!

And that is why Al-Citeh will always be the SECOND best team in Manchester. :D

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Huh, I was way off. Just for informative purposes, let's try to break this down:

EPL allegiances I could determine from the last few pages:

Man U: MountieBoyOz
Arsenal: Bob Gray, Jon
Liverpool: TBA
Tottenham: AMC
Aston Villa: pirate, BiddCo, 3W
Fulham: jmh
Man City: WeWantMore
Blackburn: JFGophers
Everton: Kepler, Shirtless Guy

It makes things more interesting if you know who to make fun of when applicable.

Somebody here is Chelsea; I remember that from when I was auditioning teams last summer.

Put me down for Everton in the spirit of "because nobody else would take them." Also: I like the name. Also: they appear to be about to go bankrupt, and I like a challenge.

Wait, are you claiming there aren't active IRA supporters in Southie?

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Put me down for "I still don't really know, and when I finally do choose a team, it will probably be for random/arbitrary reasons that no one can take seriously and it probably won't even be an English team". Can I just choose five teams?

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I wouldn't put anything past Southie.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

I will probably end up following which ever team Donovan goes to (unless its Man City). Just can't bring myself to cheer for that twat from Argentina ;)

Put me down for Everton for now (as my signature says)

I do think 3W is a Villa fan too.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

EoDS, you should adopt a team that nobody else roots for. I say go with Wigan, because Roberto Martinez seems like an OK dude.

Mesut Ozil and his family went on vacation in Barcelona and it turned into rampant speculation that he was signing for Barca. Gotta love transfer season gossip.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

We used to have some Chelski bandwagoners around here, but I don't recall hearing much from them for awhile, so maybe they're off the wagon.

Don't recall any Toon fans. I always thought they'd be a decent club to follow if I didn't follow Arsenal, although the Mike Ashley era would have been pretty hard to stomach.

Re: World Cup Soccer XVII: There can only be ONE!!!11!!!

Screw it, put me down as "officially unaffiliated".

You should just go with Blackpool for this season. They will be going down so you can choose someone new next year. :D

ManU (30+ years so don't give me bandwagon) and Newcastle here.

btw - I haven't paid much attention lately to the MLS friendlies, but what's the general consensus on the level of play, have the international teams brought full sides, and can we say anything about the future of the MLS from what's taken place?
