Jol and Fulham have agreed personal terms; the holdup is in working out a compensation package with Ajax because he has (depending on which source you read) either a year or two years left at his current contract there. Reports are that the Ajax board were at one point refusing to even meet with Fulham representatives, but that Fulham's CEO is now in Amsterdam and has met with people at Ajax today. My (optimistic) take is that at this point, it's a matter of "when" (and "how much") rather than "if", and I'd guess it'll all be wrapped up by Friday, but then last Friday I was saying I thought it would all be wrapped up by this Monday, so who knows? In any case, no, nothing is official yet.

Edit to add: Except that LS's facial hair is officially hilarious. He looks like he's auditioning to be an extra in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Some interesting matchups, particularly Celtic-Braga, Braga was tremendous defensively last year. I think in the Champions division, every game has a pretty clear favorite.

Rosenborg and AIK might be the most evenly matched of the lot. And that's not exactly all that even.

But the Sweden/Norway angle is pretty amusing for that matchup.

AVFC transfer rumor update:

Man City is up to $25mm for Milner (up from $20mm); MON says it is unlikely they'll keep him if he really wants to go. Ashley Young has said he wants to stay on and will sign an extension if the team wants. Team says Gabby isn't for sale.

New kits have claret and blue checkerboard down each side and a new sponsor FxPro (foreign exchange broker). Socks look like they stole them from a high school cheerleading squad.

I'd like to see Celtic advance. I've enjoyed their performances over here. The Non-Champions path is tough for these teams because the next round is a killer.

I would think Debrecen and Basel would be a good match-up. Debrecen won't roll over easily. Also, Danish teams have underperformed recently and BATE has a track record in the tournament.

FYI. Five of the twenty "Champions" teams will make the group stage. Last year those five teams earned 17 points, two earned zero points and one made the knock-out stage.

They should check their facts then. Jol had agreed personal terms days ago; Ajax refused to negotiate a release from his contract.

Edit to add: Or, depending on how you want to look at it, Jol was using Fulham for leverage to get more transfer money from the Ajax board all along, knowing that they would not agree to let him go.

I agree the headline is misleading. "Martin Jol resists Fulham to Stay at Ajax" seems in conflict with "Jol, 54, had agreed personal terms with Fulham, who hoped to use an exit clause in his contract to prise him away.
But the Premier League club said negotiations with Ajax "revealed the clause was no longer valid" and that talks between the clubs had ceased."

Usually the BBC is a bit less "Daily Mail" in their blatant attempts for click throughs. Especially when "Ajax rebuffs Fulham's bid for Jol" is both accurate and intriguing.

Roberto Mancini said that he wants Lando on Al-Citeh. Also, Phil Neville was quoted saying that Donovan wants to go back to the Toffees.

I'm hoping he goes back to Everton for a loan because I won't have to hate him if he works for The Iron Sheik.

It would be best for Landon Donovan and for USA Soccer that he return to Everton if he's going to leave the MLS. The coach trusts him, he's not Anti-American, and the depth chart will see him get quality minutes.

Sad to see Eduardo leave Arsenal, as he was a class act and was just coming into his own with the Gunners when the horrific leg break happened. One of those players you'll always wonder how good they might have been if they didn't have a career changing injury. I'll be a little bit of a Shaktar Donetsk fan as long as he's with them.
