Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

They certainly did that.:)

RIT played one of their worst games of the season in the biggest game they played all season in the ECAC West semifinals. They got romped by Plattsburgh and unfortunately were left out of the NCAA's because of this fact. If they had won that game they would have been in.

So many ways to slice this loaf. Clearly RIT made their bed losing that semi to Platty, but as I've said before, they could have lost that game and still gotten into the dance if they had not given Elmira 3 out of 4 points in their regular season matchups. Or, perhaps Middlebury stays home if they lose the NESCAC title game, instead they end up hosting. Or, what if NCAA counted intersectional games, in which case Amherst gets bumped?

So many variables, just gotta win AND do it when it counts most.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

They just ran into an equally as good Amherst team and had an unfortunate communication breakdown between a D and Cubberley that resulted in the game-winning goal in OT.

Hey, breakdowns happen, even to great teams. Elmira deserved to play for the national championship, too bad the game winner was so fluky. But again, I say timing is everything. A couple minutes before that goal was scored, EC had an unexpected open net when Elek misread a delayed penalty. What if EC had recognized that a split second sooner and had gotten a puck on net?

Chance favors the prepared mind. Amherst was prepared to take advantage of a breakdown that night, and Elmira wasn't.

I agree. I'm not trying to take anything away from Amherst as they certainly deserved everything they worked for. "You make your own luck and bounces" as some coaches say and that's what Amherst did. I just wish the NC was won on a "pretty" goal that's all. I wanted it to be a play the team that lost just couldnt have prevented because the other team made an outstanding play.

BTW- I think the Coady opportunity was in the third period and not in the overtime.

While nobody ever hopes to lose, I agree that losing on a pretty goal is much better. I seem to recall when EC lost that overtime game at Midd last year that the winning goal was a dazzler, and Cubbs had no chance.

Actually that goal came in a lot of traffic in front of the net. It was not pretty. In fact, it was pretty scrappy and most of the players on the ice and fans in the stands realized that a goal was scored after the ref's arm indicated the goal. I would have prefered a beautiful play and unstoppable goal to end the game. But I am sure that Amherst be happy with any goal that wins them the National Championship.

Not sure what goal you are referring to. The one I mentioned was a short-handed two on one in which the puck went back and forth from Mcnally to Cellino to McNally for a tip past a sprawling Cubberly.

That was a pretty goal, as I watched it on the USCHO feed. Perhaps the goal being referred to was in the Cardinal Panther Classic where Midd won, 2-1 but Midd goalie was unbelievable as Elmira outshot them 2-1 if you look at the stats. It was only Midds second game while Elmira had 7 or so games in.

Once they met in early January, Middlebury was more sasoned and shot were even. The McNally?Cellino goal was pretty. They had one of the best shorthanded special teams in DIII hockey last year.

Agreed. My point was that losing on a goal like that does not generate the type of "what if" that Prez was talking about. All you can do is tip your cap to the opponent for a job well done.

Agreed. that was a beautiful play. I was refering to the game winning goal. If EC had to lose in the Championship game I would have preferred that the game winning goal be a beautiful goal, like the one you described, not the scrappy one in OT.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Well I remember "The Goal" as I watched the game via webcast. One of the more bizarre finishes I've witnessed.
Prior to any of this a delayed penalty was called late in the tied game and the Amherst goalie bee lined to the bench for the extra attacker only to find out when she got there that the delayed penalty was against Amherst! EC had gotten possession of the puck and a race ensued to the empty net between the Elmira player and the Amherst goalie. EC shot the puck at the gaping net just before the goalie arrived and it was wide...left.
The game slips into OT and a weak shot on net saw Cubberly smother the puck with her trapper. An EC defenseman was hovering over the goalie presumably waiting for Cubberly to lift her mitt and give her possession of the puck as there were no Amherst players in sight. Seconds ticked by...you could hear the ref yelling, Move it! Move it! Cubberly exposes the puck to give possession to her D however by this time a streaking Amherst forward crashes the scene and pokes the puck into the net. Game Over!
I can remember thinking at the time how so very unfortunate it was for the Seniors of EC as they had the game in their grasp and a mental error saw it all slip away in a heartbeat...

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

1.Plattsburgh
2.Amherst
3.RIT
4.Middlebury
5.Elmira
6.Manhattanville
7.Trinity
8.Norwich
9.West School By default
10.West School By default

If Adrian beats River Falls(the strength of the West) and gets thumped by everyone out east 0-6 I have a hard time believing any of those teams can be strong. Sorry...Just saying!

What about Lake Forrest?

By the way everyone can submit their polls if they want but since there aren't many games the next two weeks I'm going to wait until the 12th post the next poll.

6/8 Wins vs St Marys,Augsburg,Finlandia. Not very impressed. They are a mid pack team in any conference out east. However, you can only beat who you play and their record is good so I guess give them my 9 slot.

Interesting that you put RIT in 3rd, when they have only beaten teams that have won 50% or less of their games, with the exception of getting only 1 of 4 points against Amherst, the only team they have played with a winning record.

Saying that, I belive they are a good team, but we will see how they are looking by late January after having games against Elmira and Plattsburgh. If they win 3 of 4 or better, we can certainly anoint them into the top 5, but untill they can win against the better teams consistently, I think they are a better fit in places 6 through 10.

Good luck to the Tigers next month!!

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Just for jollies, let's remember that there are only a bit shy of 50 DIII schools w hockey programs, so the poll is trying to identify the top 20%??

So assuming that this exercise is to try to identify the range of schools that may fill the DIII auto bids and at large bids, why don't we open it up to more than 10 teams and get folks' views on who the "national" players are?

happy holidays!

1 - USCHO ranks the top 10
2 - We already started the poll
3 - It takes more time to pick more teams
4 - It takes more time to add up the points

as someone who ran the poll for a few years, I can promise you that 10 is plenty. As far as the other stuff he said, there are only 7 playoff teams, so it seems kinda pointless to pick more then 10....if anything we should drop down to 7 :P jk
