Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Why should the FF not be held at the site of the highest seed. Personally I think the every 3 or 4 years whatever it is or is said to be is a bunch of bs. You want to host its simple: WIN. You want an at large bid WIN.

To play devil's advocate...

Why would the west teams want to keep their programs if this was the case? It's kind of like "No Taxation without Representation."

Because D-III women's hockey is not a "money making sport" for the NCAA. They attempt to minimize cost of putting on the tournament as much as possible.

There are more teams in the East than in the West and they have three auto bids to the West's two so they already have a leg up on having more teams in.

It's extremely tough for the West teams to win the at-large bids because the committee has to keep "financial cost and responsibility" in mind when picking the teams.

They are not allowed to fly teams for the Quarterfinals from what I understand making the split almost have to be 5-2 every year. The chances of the west taking the two at-large bids every year is touhg because of there are a stronger number of programs than in the East.

The biggest thing working against the West is that the East has five of its best teams if not the best five teams in two conferences.

Only two of those teams can get autobids leaving three strong teams left to get the Pool C bids. (That's also without upsets...if a team outside of the power 5 won their respective conference tournament it would make it even harder for the west.)

I'm not saying whether I think the west does or does not deserve to get the at-large bids. Just stating the facts on why they haven't so far.

More than likely the the committee would love to be able to find a set-up where they can fly two teams at most. This happened once when GAC and Stevens Point came East in 2004? IIRC.

Flying three teams hasn't happened yet but the men's D-III tournament has had to do this a few times in the past. Will this be the year they finally do it for the women? From what I've been told it's supposed to be but you never know what will happen when the NC$$ is involved.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Why don't they just have a tournament where the west plays the west and the east plays the east and the top team from each side plays in the championship?

Because that would make too much sense.:)

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

To this day I think Stevens Point and western fans are still a little steamed about that selection but atleast Elmira backed it up by winning the NC.

There one loss was to Superior :) I think this year started to bring the change to make pool B's eligible for pool C's. The pool C's that year were 23-1-2 Gustavus who UWSP had beat and Middlebury.

We aren't steamed about it anymore, but we reserve the right to bring it up at any point when the East whines about being screwed out of a bid.

see above---a 26-1 team...did not make the playoffs let alone get the right to host the tournament. We have had 9 years of eastern frozen fours with plenty of good western teams going without hosting or being left out for financial reasons. In 04-05 Stevens Point was 24-2-2, Gustavus was 23-3-1---Plattsburgh at 20-5-1 got the pool C over St Thomas who was 21-3-2.

05-06 Gustavus 22-3-2 no host
06-07 Gustavus 25-2 no host
07-08 Gustavus 25-1 no host
08-09 Gustavus 22-1-4 no host

I don't know what more the west has to do to host...granted Gustavus lost all their first round playoff games all those years :)

The east whines about being screwed out of a bid because the east are the owners of EVERY national championship....ever...and only once out of 9 times has a west team ever been a runner-up in the frozen four. Obviously having a good record doesn't translate to postseason success so the fact that you bring up Gustavus' records means nothing. When a Plattsburgh team has a worst record than a West team, they get the bid. Why? Because they play Elmira twice a year and Middlebury typically twice a year. There is no competition out there that translates to a battle against a Plattsburgh/Elmira/Middlebury/Amherst/RIT and that shows with only one showing in 9 years in the title game.

And I agree with the East/West championship game theory.

because when the incredibly inferior 21-4 western team beats the 22-3 eastern team....you guys will complain that the other 22-3 eastern team got screwed out of a national title.

No...because we will have gotten to play the other good teams to then coast to a national championship :D

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

I'd also say that for a few years there Middlebury and Plattsburgh were clearly the best teams in the country and should have been playing eachother for the national title. It can be argued that a western team playing in its home rink might have enough of an advantage to upset one of those teams and I wouldn't approve of that. Because you know if you did the east west thing, the title game would have to alternate regions every year :)

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

I'm fine with that, don't get me wrong. But in the current format, there is no argument as to where it will/should be.

Gustavus and St. Thomas proved that last year knocking off the eventual National Champions.....

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Does it really matter who comes in 2nd? I don't even remember who it was last year.

Wasn't it one of those highly touted....best league in the world....we might as well not even have a frozen four because they are the best, ECAC WEST teams? ;) ;)

Elmira had a VERY GOOD team last season. They arguably had two of the best if not the best players at their positions in Kayla Coady and Allison Cubberley.

They just ran into an equally as good Amherst team and had an unfortunate communication breakdown between a D and Cubberley that resulted in the game-winning goal in OT.

Exceptional final last year between two very good teams. It was a shame one had to lose but you definitely have to tip your cap to what Amherst did knocking off Plattsburgh, Middlebury, and Elmira to win their first national championships. Those three programs combined for all the previous 7 national titles.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

My question is what made the National Champion Amherst team different from the Amherst team that RIT beat 4-1 last year?

Being from Rochester, all you have to do is look at the Buffalo Bills during the 4 consecutive Super Bowl appearances. They were an incredible team, but could never win the BIG one when it most counted. There will always be an empty feeling there in Western New York, after so many great regular seasons back in the early 1990's.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Timing...peak at the right time...

They certainly did that.:)

RIT played one of their worst games of the season in the biggest game they played all season in the ECAC West semifinals. They got romped by Plattsburgh and unfortunately were left out of the NCAA's because of this fact. If they had won that game they would have been in.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

My question is what made the National Champion Amherst team different from the Amherst team that RIT beat 4-1 last year?

A few thoughts:

a* Same team, different night(s)

b* Not sure it's timing and peaking, as the Jeffs lost to Midd in the NESCAC finals -- their only loss of the year in conference

c* Elek didn't lose a game after RIT (Elek lost 3 all year, and Hu was in goal vs. Midd, NESCAC finals)

d* A ticket to the dance ... which they cashed in (playoffs are a different game!)

e* Coach Plumer -- got the team prepared to execute when they needed to, and to capitalize on an Elmira mistake in OT

If the real question is, why did Amherst get the "ticket" and not a team that beat them, I think the answer is partly (b) -- Amherst undefeated in NESCAC conference play until the conf. finals, and partly RIT's 3 losses to Elmira and Platt & tie vs. Sacred Heart (soundly avenged the next day, as it was). [Rationale for western team that beat Amherst not getting bid = too many conf. losses & location, location, location (for our western friends)]
