Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

well, it's just my opinion but I am anticipating a tough weekend for Norwich and upon reflection (and after reading their thread posts and others) that the Cadets have faced a softer schedule and eeked out some close wins, and that although Manhattan has 2 loses (including HC) that they are on the rise and firming up as a young team and Norwich is going to slide (undefeated is a heavy burden) as if they are the ST.Catherine of the East. Elmira -- I am also writing them off too early perhaps, but ouch with another loss -- where will you put them?

I guess my vision is becoming more realistic based on the results and less surrealistic based on my skewed view of how they stack up

so you based your poll this week on what you think might happen next weekend? Last I checked, close wins are still wins. i'm guessing this sunday will tell us all we need to know!

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Look at it from the RIT perspective. If one or two more teams at RIT played D-I, then the entire athletic program would be deemed D-I. Would we exclude RIT's women's hockey team solely because of the decision of say men's tennis and soccer? Of course not. But, if part of RIT's conversion to a D-I school included increasing the women's hockey team budget by 20%, then they would have an advantage over their remaining D-III counterparts.

If RIT was all DI but the women's team played a DIII schedule I probably wouldn't watch them whether they got extra support or not. If you are a DI team and you're playing a DIII schedule then that just tells me that the school doesn't care enough to fully support the team, if that's the case then they shouldn't.

Although I suppose it would make sense if they are transitioning, but if that is the case then they shouldn't be considered either.

So is the whole athletics program going?

That would make the most since if you take both hockey programs up that way they can have athletic scholarships.

Doubtful, I don't think they are ready to make all the sports DI. Maybe in another 10+ years.

Then if that's the case I would think it would be foolish to bring the women's program up to D-I.

You have a competitive D-III team that has the ability to compete for the NCAA Tournament and Championship right now. Why throw that away to move up to D-I where you will more than likely overmatched in talent, size, and speed for 9 out of the 10 teams you play because you can't offer athletic scholarhships.

While the RIT Men's team has certainly had success in their own league. They have yet to make the big dance and without the scholarships they can't compete with the "big boys" of D-I on a consistent basis. The wins over Cornell and Minnesota were certainly nice but take a look at both of those programs finishing records that year. Neither were up to their normal standards.

I just don't see the perk for the RIT women's program to jump up to D-I if they aren't bringing the whole program up.

Dear River Falls,

Please beat Adrian by a lot this weekend to make it easier for me to determine my rankings.

Thanks,
Mania

P.S. Losing would also help too, whichever you prefer.

Re: Women's DIII 2009-2010 Fan Opinion Poll

Well I can appreciate your opinion re. Norwich but I'm not feeling a whole lot of love here. lol

So, like Mania said yesterday, we'll let the results speak for themselves.

watch Norwich "slide" or... watch Phill eat his words!
Where's my Daddy?!
... I was getting a mite peckish Friday, but then I remembered that you said HC did not mean much, and that M-hattan was huge. Obserbear (as always) made an insightful prediction that goaltending would be crucial in holding up under big games, and we saw Williams/RIT, Stevens Pt/LF and UWRF/Adrian show why this weekend. It sounds like M'hattan's goalie was superb in a shutout -- kudos, and to show the love and absolute future potential for the Norwich ladies -- they are up to #9 on my poll (they did get a point). RIT gains respect for traveling and doing well on the weekend. I don't have the street cred of an Obserbear, but I hope I have the "well-read" cred for at least paying attention.

1) Amherst
2) Plattsburgh
3) Middlebury
4) UWRF
5) RIT
6) Manhattanville
7) Lake Forest
8) Elmira
9) Norwich
10) Trinity -- anyone who can play the champs to a standstill is credible

Mania -- talk me up on RIT -- I need a little "sell" -- close the deal for me, will ya? I miss that swagger from last year -- how about a reprise of the weekend from their perspective

To be quite honest I was disappointed by this weekend. Sure they had 2 wins and that is good but honestly if they are as good as I would hope then the results should have been much different.

In the Williams game the defense was not good at all. Sure they won 7-3 but Williams only had 13 shots, so thats like a 77ish% save percentage. They were all powerplay goals so I'll give them a little leeway but that really isn't good. You can't let that happen if you want to make it anywhere. The offense did fairly well, actually better than I figured they would.

The second night was a different story. Respectable goal tending (93ish% save percentage) but not very good offense. You need to score more than 3 times on 49 shots.

That being said, if they can put the offense from the Williams game and the defense from the NEC game I think they could do pretty well against a lot of teams, but until then I don't think these wins give much confidence. I will not be moving them up on my polls, at least on their own merit. They may coincidently move up, but only if I think certain teams didn't do enough to stay where they are.

That being said, I don't mean to be negative...I think this is a solid team, if they can get their act together I think they can hang with the best of them. They're going to need to do that if they want to win next weekend. They could come out with 2 wins or 2 losses, it really depends on what team shows up. They have the talent to do it, but they need to use it.

I never thought I'd rank a team after a 7-0 loss, but they did outshoot Manny.

This weekend there will be a few good matchups before the holiday break. Obviously Amherst RIT (2) and Elmira v Manhattanville will be a good one.

6: RIT
7:Lake Forrest
8:Norwich
9: UW - River Falls
10: Stevens Point

10th was a toss up between St. Thomas, Stevens Point, and Superior. I also found it difficult to place Manhattanville, RIT, and Elmira although I believe all 3 should be somewhere between 4-6. I'm still a little skeptical about Amherst and Middlebury, I think the next 2 weeks should help out with that.

The west is extremely confusing to me with the fact that there is no clear top teams other than Lake Forrest. Everyone seams to lose to everyone else. With RF splitting with Adrian,a team that lost both series to Neumann and Utica, and GA losing to St. Thomas it doesn't inspire much confidence in the West. Lake Forrest looks like they may be the real deal but unfortunately they don't play anyone from the East so the only thing we can go off of their Adrian games.

I would love to put Holy Cross on the poll, but I will not because they are listed as DI. Can someone please explain how they can be in ECAC-East when they are a DI team? Can they play in the ECAC-East tournament or in the NCAA tournament?

Clever names, I find it quite interesting that you have "Wii - River Fools" so high after this past weekend.

Really? What do I know? I am the biggest Fool of them all. I believe RF has a tough time scoring goals, and their strong suit is defense. Right now, I'm all about the defense -- otherwise I would be slotting RIT higher for its monster goal output. Amherst 0-0 w/Trinity means goals can be hard to come by even if you put up 49 shots, so I like the teams with D :-D

HC is generally a DI school, but their womens hockey team plays a DIII schedule.

They can not play in the NCAA, and I don't believe in the ECAC tourney, either.

If I recall correctly, they wind up playing a couple of other similarly situated (DI, DII, DIII) teams (Sacred Heart -- DI but no conference?) in a year-end mini tournament.

That's kinda the way I see it. I might switch Midd and Amherst, but it's a coin toss at this point.
