I expected I'd raise some eyebrows putting Norwich and Lake Forest in the top 5.
Norwich was a very good team last season that almost knocked off Elmira in the quarterfinals. I saw them play the Soaring Eagles and they were just as good as Elmira except for just a little bit less depth. They returned basically everyone from last year's squad and I honestly think with the right bounce of the puck Norwich could be in the FF this year.
Lake Forest is more just of a rewarding a great start. They havent lost yet which is more than any other team in the West can say right now, except St. Catherine (who would have been #11 in my poll)![]()
A couple other teams to keep an eye on that no one is talking about yet are Williams and Trinity. Williams might have finally corrected the ship and returned to an elite team as they are off a 3-0-1 start. They get a chance to prove it playing RIT this weekend.
Trinity will have the same chance as they travel to Amherst to take on the defending champs for two games. They still have Iwachiw! watch out.
1) Amherst
2) Plattsburgh
3) Middlebury
4) Wisconsin-River Falls
5) Lake Forest
6) Manhattanville
7) RIT
8) Gustavus Adolphus
9) Elmira
10) Norwich
Thanks for your kind words about Norwich Derek. Being a Norwich fan, I appreciate it.
What you saw last season over in Elmira was a squad that "didn't quite believe" they could go all the way. What we are seeing today is a team that has the experience to do so, and added depth to boot, thanks to their recruiting efforts. Bouncing pucks and bad ref calls works both ways so one cannot count on those to win. Most of the time, the winners "work" for their luck.
Certainly, the upcoming games vs. Holy Cross and M'ville will somewhat clarify where Norwich should stand in these polls, but more important will be the games vs. Plattsburg, M'bury and last but not least Amherst coming up later in the season.
Right now though, everyone is healthy and gearing up accordingly for the games this weekend so stay tuned! I hear a few of them are even sharpening their Norwich swords... for the big kill. lol (thought I'd throw that in there for the non-believers)
I am confused as to why RIT doesn't get a higher ranking. I don't know who they lost, but were very good last year. Seem to have a strong showing stat wise, being near the top of the scoring race.
they fell when they tied Neumann...haven't done much to climb the standings lately...plus Mania hasn't talked them up enough yet this year![]()
... and 2, I've decided it is better to let the results speak for themselves.
well, it's just my opinion but I am anticipating a tough weekend for Norwich and upon reflection (and after reading their thread posts and others) that the Cadets have faced a softer schedule and eeked out some close wins, and that although Manhattan has 2 loses (including HC) that they are on the rise and firming up as a young team and Norwich is going to slide (undefeated is a heavy burden) as if they are the ST.Catherine of the East. Elmira -- I am also writing them off too early perhaps, but ouch with another loss -- where will you put them?I'm curious why everyone is jumping Manhattanville so high. Hardly anyone had Mville in their poll last week. They come in and split with a possibly overrated Elmira team...and now everyone is droppin Elmira pretty far and jumpin Manhattanville in.
Phil for example...can you explain...last week you had Elmira at 6 and Manhattanville unranked. The Valiants split with Elmira and you drop Elmira to 9 and jump Manhattanville all the way to 6? I don't get it.
Just would like a little insight to the thinking behind it.
Fan Opinion Poll Tuesday 12-01-09
There was a 5th place vote for Holy Cross, I'm not counting it since they are not DIII. I know I said I would include independents from other divisions before but I don't really see the point.
I think Holy Corsss should be included because they play heavy in D3. Is St.Anselms' the same? Why ignore good teams that mean something for schedule strenght. it helps to see how you stack up, and keeps them on the radar for everyone to understand what games against those opponents can be judged.
These teams are from D-I or D-II institutions, but do their womens' hockey teams get money allocated to scholarships? Do they get more money allocated to their operating budgets? If the answer to any of these questions is Yes, then they have a competitive advantage and should be exluded from polls. If the answer to the questions are all No, then they have no competitive advantage and should be included in the polls.
Look at it from the RIT perspective. If one or two more teams at RIT played D-I, then the entire athletic program would be deemed D-I. Would we exclude RIT's women's hockey team solely because of the decision of say men's tennis and soccer? Of course not. But, if part of RIT's conversion to a D-I school included increasing the women's hockey team budget by 20%, then they would have an advantage over their remaining D-III counterparts.

I guess my vision is becoming more realistic based on the results and less surrealistic based on my skewed view of how they stack up

Actually spike, when the D-I moratorium is lifted the women's hockey team will be the next to go up. According to reliable sources the paperwork is all filled out.
So is the whole athletics program going?
That would make the most since if you take both hockey programs up that way they can have athletic scholarships.
