Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

Not as funny as a gopher on skates who needs dental work. At least a cow and a badger are benefits to human society unlike the ankle-twisting, lawn mower deck breaking gopher.

You sure to enjoy hanging out in the BADger thread, I bet there's some red in your closet. You will find no maroon in mine.

(My niece bought me a BC sweatshirt when she was in school there. But I'm careful about where and when I wear it.)

If you were to retain a small part of what you read, and I know that you read my posts in case you are featured in some fashion, you may recall that I was born in Wisconsin, and my family heritage is in Wisconsin. So I have lots of Wisconsin related items to fill in our summer hockey news doldrums. But a Badger fan? Call me reformed, but don't call me a BADger!

Egads! The only reasonable place to wear that thing would be in the shower so nobody would see you, but that's rather impractical for the purpose of showering.

I don't recall your background, but after reading it, I know why. I just thought you were really smart. For a rodent fan.

When it came to having gophers or badgers on my property, I didn't feel terribly blessed by either. Gophers dig many small holes; badgers expand some of those into disaster areas one can't ignore. Not sure even the cows are fond of either of them.

Racine Wisconsin is the Kringle capitol of the world. In case you didn't know, the Kringle is the official state food item as of 2013.

Prompted by the discussion about the remaining years of eligibility for OSU’s players resulting from the NCAA’s decision on a covid year, I went back to review the remaining eligibility for UW’s players as well. If I finally have the covid year impact for them correct, the Badger roster for the next several years gets more interesting than it already was for me. To whit (again if I have managed to get the covid year factored in correctly):
  • O’Brien and Wheeler are eligible to return next season ala Webster for OSU. If so, the additional Fs in the 24-25 class will produce a total of 14 quality Fs. A manageable number, as it would mean 12 Fs for the 25-26 season barring any loss of players opting to transfer because of unhappiness with playing time. It also should make for a potent roster for 24-25 as well and provide a buffer against the loss of someone due to injury. But there likely will be some problems for 25-26 due to the 26 Olympics (see below).
  • Participation on the US Olympic squad tryouts and final roster also yields an extension of one year. This allowed Buchner to play last season as she missed 21-22 to try out for the team. Curl is eligible to play this season because she had her eligibility extended by both the covid and Olympic years. This season will exhaust her eligibility.
  • Like Curl, Eden has both covid and Olympics years of eligibility extending her years to 6, leaving her with eligibility for 24-25 and 25-26.
  • The 25-26 season is another one for the quadrennial pilfering of college rosters to fill out the US Olympics team roster. Depending on how well the Badger players continue to develop, there is likely to be another significant impact on the Badgers akin to 21-22. Players of potential interest include Harvey, Jungels, Potter, LailaE, Simms, Hall, Eden, Scannell, and MacNaughton. I doubt the Olympic team would invite 9 players from a single team to its tryouts, but I considered the four they “drafted” last time excessive, and the possible number of quality players that could be of interest for the 26 Olympics makes me nervous. I would add Ava Murphy to my list, but Canada, ala Watts, seems to forgo selecting college players (but who knows). So, depending on the number of players that will get “drafted’ for the Olympics, MJ may develop migraines trying to patch together a solid roster for 25-26. The 26-27 roster could be a hairball as well.
I am getting too old for this scat.

While Watts wasn't selected for Canada, there always seem to be a few Sarah Fillier type collegians who do make the Olympic team.

I so dread the Olympic cycle. I hope the in the raid we only lose Harvey, LE and Eden. That should leave UW enough to have a reasonable chance to win the ncaa's that year.

I'm assuming the women's recruiting window mirrors the men's, so as of 8/1 Jr's can commit for the 25/26 season. Right now they have 11 F 5 D and 3 G on the books. I'd like to see 4 F, 2 D and 1 G sign on for that season. For 26/27 they have 8 F 3 D and 2G. They will undoubtedly lose players and I hate being disadvantaged 1 season out of every 4. I don't think UW has won a Natty in an Olympic year since 2006.

Wooo. That looks good. A bit of a hike for me usually but I will be heading east in August.

You can order off their website and have it shipped...It is that good. The bakery itself if worth the stop if you have the chance. Lots of goodies to temp you. I should also say that I am referring to the Durand Street location as I think they have a couple other stores in Racine but the Durand Street bakery is the one we go to. It has a deli and a gift shop.

Nice interview with 2024 commit Emma Venusio:

Thanks for sharing this. Vesuvio looks like an interesting player. She comes across as having lots of personality, energy, and enthusiasm - a fun player that others will enjoy having as a teammate and fans watching. Both her emphasis on improving her skating and shot reflect a desire to contribute on offense and willingness to be physical strike me as akin to Murphy’s. She should fit well with the Badgers.

Looking ahead to 25-26 season, Gorbatenko has two sisters who are eligible for that recruiting class - one at F and the other at D. Information about them is hard to find, but, if playing with their sister is an attraction, they may be worth a look.

Alcohol will be available this season at LaBahn and the Kohl Center: https://uwbadgers.com/news/2023/8/3/...4d30333fe898f4

Does LaBahn really need alcohol to enhance the fan experience? Ok, perhaps the KC for men's hockey. But really, has the lack of alcohol for the past few years actually been a big source of fan dissatisfaction? Seems it created major problems in the past. Also, this should be a decision by the UW Board decision - the AthDep role should be on putting quality teams to enhance the fan experience, not dictating alcohol policies. People can continue to enjoy drinks before and after games which is a nice boost to the local economy.
