Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

The Badgers have posted a 2023-2024 roster. It confirms the return of Chayla Edwards and Cami Kronish (?!!!) but omits McNaughton (!!!?). Perhaps McNaughton is swabbing teams with Kronish this coming season, or, hopefully, the team should be looking for a new web editor.

They've added a 23-24 tab to the website, but the roster is still the 22-23 roster, unless Shirley, Compher, Buchbinder, et al got granted a magic year of eligibility.

The two versions I mentioned bounced back and forth quite a while. But I just checked again, and they now seem to have it right. McNaughten inherits #30, the jersey Kronish had. However, it is surprising it took so long to get it straight. Perhaps just part of the new fan experience they are seeking to create.

LaBahn needs a new, legible scoreboard a lot more than it needs alcohol. If UW is serious about "enhancing the fan experience," it would figure out how to get a decent medium-tron installed. As for the decision to sell alcohol: the Athletic Department will claim that this is a "business decision" and therefore outside the purview of the Athletic Board. There's definitely a huge tension surrounding the definition of "business" v. "policy."

Yeah and one on both ends too.

With links to their social media sites and click on the "$" and you can hire them to help you with marketing things as part of NIL opportunities.

Still no word on on the 4th paid coach. It's obviously worked out by now, but it would be nice to be able to sleep at night.

Here is another list of top players who are on a list for future recruiting classes. Of note are two UW recruits in the top ten:
  • Maggie Scannell from SMS who will be joining the Badgers next season.
  • Charlette Pieckenhagen who will join the 25-26 season. She is the one who apparently did her own, personal trips to teams she had interest in and committed to the UW before her junior year of high school.
Both currently are listed as 5’10’’ which will mean the UW will have 4 Fs at 5”10 or better on its 25-26 roster (LEdwards is listed at 6’ 1” and Gorbatenko at 5’ 11”). Potter also is listed as 5' 11', McNaughton 6', and Kotlowski 5' 10". A possible trend in recruiting?

Other names to note are Fs Nela Lopusanova and Bella Fanale as well as Megan Healy (D). All 3 are members of BK Selects with whom the Badgers seem to have developed a good relationship. Other schools also are active recruiting BK players, but perhaps Bucky can continue its recent success at BK. Lopusanova may be the prize of the group as she is only starting high school this year but has emerged as a top player in Slovakian leagues for older players as well as lighting up the international tournaments. A recruit for the 27-28 class for someone. Barring some unforeseen reversal in her level of play, it would be nice if she were to choose UW.

And Emma Venusio is on the "players to watch" list.

Just checked the BK 23-24 roster and Lopusanova is listed as a sophomore. So, she will be eligible to be recruited next year and to play college in the 26-27 season.

A first from Czechia: Adela Sapovalivova has committed to the Badgers. Instagram says it's for 2025. She was enormous at U18s.

Looks like a great addition. She was the 2nd leading scorer and made all tournament team at the U18 women’s worlds that were played in Madison last summer. Currently 17 and was coached on Czechia’s team by former Badger Carla MacLeod.

Unfortunately for me, and others I assume, Czechia didn't play any of their games at LaBahn, and the games played at Capital Ice were all played the same days and times as the LaBahn games. So I didn't get to see her play.

She played one. 2-1 loss to Sweden in the quarterfinals. She had an assist on the only Czech goal and had a couple of great scoring chances in the 3rd when they tried to come back.

Here are two links to articles about recruit prospects. One is to Adela Šapovalivova who has committed to the Badgers for the 24-25 season. The other is to Nela Lopušanova, a prospect for the 25-26 season. Both are nice summaries of two excellent players who have attracted lots of recruiting attention. Šapovalivova’s commit is especially nice since she is the first Badger recruit from Czechia, a country that has started to have more prominence on the international scene. Perhaps this indicates more attention by the Badgers to Czechia players. Similarly, If Lopušanova were to commit to the Badgers she would the first one from Slovakia as well as being projected as a major presence on offense.

The Lopušanova personal information contains two items of interest. One is her desire to attend college in North America and play in the NCAA, by which I assume she means for an NCAA Championship. At the end, there also is mention that there were offers from a number of other schools that offer hockey before they settled on BK. Just a reminder that recruiting begins well before college.

Ad?la Šapovalivov? - Wikipedia
Nela Lopušanov? - Wikipedia

If you have difficulty connecting via the above links, simply type internet searches on the last names in the beginning text followed by the word hockey. The diacritics used in in the Czechian and Slovakian languages sometimes are not processed as expected.

LE left off the colligate team so she can play with the bigs.

I was slightly concerned Frosty was going to try a corner the international market but MJ landing AS3V is huuugggee. I believe there are Checz's on wbb and vb teams, yes?
