Wisconsin Women's Hockey 2023-2024

The good news... The sinners have scored a touchdown and a made field goal. They have a legit shot at double digits, being just 1 away with over 1 period to go...

The bad news...The have been scored upon by the lion cubs and given up 12 shots.

Team records:
- most goals 16 (previous record, 14 vs Bemidji, in 2000)
- biggest margin 15 (previous record 13 vs Lindenwood 2011)
- most assists 28 (previous 21 Bemidji, 2022)
- tied the record for most goals in a period, 7, twice today, three times in the past.

Probably others, but that's what I see at a 'glance'.

(I happened to have been at the Coliseum back when the men set their most goals scoring record: 5...10...15...20... we really don't want more!)

Watts a great start for the team. 3 of the 6 D are new and so are 4 of the 12 F (2 of which are converted D), so a great chemistry and confidence building weekend. McNaughton had to face triple the shots that Gervais did in game 1 and only allowed the 1 goal. PP woke up in game 2 and went 4-5, so 4 of 8 on the weekend. The PK was 7 out of 7. Great weekend overall.

So now we have upon us one of the most requested series that has never been before as BC heads to Madtown. Sadly it's not nearly as hypable as it could have been years ago, but that's the way it goes sometimes. The games for WI are classic trap games. The first home series after a cupcake series on the road, lots of distractions in that regard, then on game 2 the banner goes up, even more if a distraction. On the positive side, many of these players have played in a trap game like this before, so it should not phase them.

So the ticket and parting passes are different this year. Apparently, you only have to put the parking pass and tickets in your virtual wallet once and they automatically update to the next event once the old ones are used. It was easy to download the parking pass, just click the link in the email, but it was not obvious to me how to download the game tickets. I had to go into the Badger App, then into some all in 1 app, then it came over. Kind of confusing. As of 2024 they will not use any more print at home tickets. I think this could alienate some of the purchasers.

Did you know: On this day 83 years ago, Bucky Badger was born. At least, that's when his likeness was officially copyrighted by the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. However, the idea of Bucky started roughly 50 years earlier.

When college football kicked off in 1889, the University of Wisconsin needed a mascot. They borrowed "Badgers" from the state's nickname and a real, live animal from the Madison Zoo. But, after multiple escapes and sideline terrorizations, the live badger was retired.

In 1940, the year of his "official" birth, the first drawing of Bucky wearing his signature cardinal and white sweater appeared. Nine years later, he came to life as a full-size mascot.

Why "Bucky"? It took several years for Wisconsin to settle on a name, and eventually held a contest to decide on "Buckingham U. Badger.

Taken from the Up North News, which all you Wisconsin fans should be familiar with. Who would guess that a live badger would be responsible for "sideline terrorizations"?

I'm looking for a single ticket to Friday's game for a friend if anyone has or knows of one.

Who would have ever thought it would come to this. Well if you don't have a smartphone then F you. We don't want you to come to our games.

This is a response to the last sentences in an earlier post by Timothy A in which he suggests that next year's proposed shift to the exclusive use of digital tickets and an end to any hard copy/printed ones might alienate some purchasers. For those unfamiliar with the historic "tradition" associated with tickets to LaBahn, one almost always could find tickets people had bought but were not going to use in the lobby entrances. If you arrived as the doors were opened, people in line often had extra tickets which they were happy to give away as well. Very few of these tickets went unused, most often none. We are talking giving tickets to strangers. I found this refreshing.

I have reservations people will be willing to give away tickets they will not be using to strangers via a cell phone. That could pose some security concerns. The process of finding strangers who would be interested almost certainly would be more complicated. So, I fear a nice tradition may be sacrificed in the name of a "heightened fan experience" that includes a significant increase in prices - especially for retired individuals and students.

As for T377's F you to those without smartphones, or those who simply choose to use them differently, I really do not care for the level of disdain and I wish T377 would find a different team to devote his time to.

A sad state of affairs, isn't it? Last year there were quite a few people who have the print at homes with them. So much for being an inclusive society.

So, the upgrade in "fan experience" amounts to being able to buy beer at LaBahn? I don't think many fans were missing overpriced beer during these family-friendly games. The downgrade in fan experience: no more friendly ticket pass-alongs. Still no roster/stat sheets. No more magnets? Cards? Giveaways? (I may be speaking too soon on some of this--perhaps I'll be proven wrong!)
What we'd probably all like to see: An improved audio system. A larger scoreboard (can anyone see the print on those "who is this" quiz?)--a medium-tron would be great. And roster/stat sheets because that information really is not available through the "app" and, besides, my phone battery isn't endless.
It will be interesting to watch the lines this week. Last week, Coach changed the centers on the top two lines between Thursday and Friday, so OB centered LE and Simms on Thursday while Hall centered Curl and Eden. Friday, the centers swapped places. The third and fourth lines were unchanged: Wheeler, Picard, Woz; Helgeson, Gorbatenko, Kotlowski. Defense pairings also stayed intact: Wilgren-Harvey, Jungels-Edwards, Murphy-Potter.

It seems *quite* obvious to me that that is not T377's opinion; that is T377 assuming the voice of the University and Athletic Dept and what they are saying to non-smartphone users with their 'digital only' ticket policy. You and he/she are very much in agreement.

I plan on printing off the line chart from the Lindenwood series (available at the team twitter account), at least until I get to know the numbers of the new players. That doesn't replace a roster card for the opposing players, but one could maybe find a line chart for them at their twitter account, etc. and print that as well.

Is there enough wall space on that north wall for a bigger video screen? I can't see them hanging any sort of video from the ceiling, so the north wall is the only space for one.

Yeah, the AD is flush with money but it's all going to Football, Football and Men's BB. The pixel quality on the scoreboard is like form 1987. A better quality one would be great and one on the other end would be a plus for the fans looking in that direction. It's a little sad that the premiere team on campus gets treated like an after-thought of an afterthought. I have to believe if MJ put his foot down and asked, there's no way they could tell him no, asking for a mere couple million at best. VB seems to have run the women's hockey team over in the AD's mind as well and they are not even close to a dominant level over years that the hockey team is.

I sure hope I don't smell beer at the game, to me it will just cheapen the experience. This isn't a Brewer game.

You can't trust MJ's published line charts......Pretty shocking he didn't keep Jungels and Harvey together. Wilgren was like +6 last weekend, Harvey was +9, which is just crazy.

There are 344 D1 NCAA women's volleyball teams (God knows how many DII and DIII teams), and 44 D1 NCAA women's hockey teams. Managing to be in the top ten for as many years as UW VB has managed is no small feat. The team right now is only the second team in the not-quite 50 years of Big Ten VB to win four conference championships in a row.

I don't think we need to compare women's teams. All of the sports depend on the football-related revenue, and it's a thankless job to try to parse out who deserves what. I don't begrudge any non-income sport its share. That being said, women's hockey hasn't had any facility upgrades essentially since LaBahn was built. I am confident that a capital campaign for a new scoreboard would raise at least some of the money, but the Athletic Department would need to actually put it on the to-do list. Perhaps if more AD staff attended women's hockey games, they would recognize the need. Hope springs eternal.
