Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Last I looked, Columbus don't need a dman (outside of a high end NHL level guy or two which Cody is not anywhere near ready to be at this point in his development) for a year or two. They have few roster spots coming open on D in the next 2 offseasons barring trade or something unusual happening with their RFA's (almost all of which resign with their current club). I get the arguement of getting into the organizations system, playing a pro schedule (more games and no schoolwork getting in the way), and getting that signing bonus, but I really think Cody would have been just as well off at UW for his senior year. Regardless...thanks for the memories and good luck for the kid. Seeing that he and Brendan Smith came to UW as a pseudo package as friends (was supposed to be along with Gagner too), from that standpoint...no suprise they depart together.

Speaking of Gagner, can you imagine how different that 07-08 season would have been with a combo of Gagner and Turris up front leading the way?

As of now CLB only has 4 d-man signed for the 11-12 season. One would think that would be there window for both Cody and John Moore. If Cody stayed 1 more year at UW, chances are he would still need a full season in the AHL before being ready to move it the NHL. That would put him at the 12-13 season. Also keep in mind CLB has some slight financial problems so the sooner they can get kids on entry level contracts into the roster the sooner they will have the money to get help at forward for Rick Nash as well as fill other needs CLB has. You save a lot of cap space or in CLB's case Budget space to have starters only making entry level money rather then going into there 2nd contract as a RFA...

That may be true, but it's not really the point, either. If C-bus wants him to sign, then he's probably going to sign.

You're not reading at that link you gave correctly. If you look under the 10/11 column (I think you are looking one too far to the right) you'll see 6 Dmen under contract for next season (Commodore, Tyutin, Klessa, Russel, Methot, Hejda) and a 7th Stralmann who is an RFA and was their leading point producer as a dman. Odds of a leading point producing dman that is a RFA not being extended to a multiyear deal by the current team is not very likely in the NHL (it happens...but not the most likely outcome). Humor me and assume they reup with Stralman multiyear, the following offseason Methot is a RFA and Hejda a UFA which still leaves 5 dmen under contract if they cut ties with both of the others (which I doubt with Methot as a RFA).

He probably looked at the fact that the Badgers are going to be a fairly young team this season and their odds of making another run at the NCAA championship arent the best, so he's better off making the jump to the pros now than to play another year at the UW.
Im not a fan of players leaving early either, but I understand why they do it.

I realize how many d-men CLB has for next year, i don't think they expect Cody to make the team out of camp next year, i think they are trying to get him prepared to make the club out of camp going into the 11-12 season where as of right now only 4 D-Man are on contract for... but i understand what oyu are getting at. Cody could probably come into camp in great shape and have a solid camp and still not start the season in CLB. I think they are banking on him taking a year in the AHL first before he's ready and if things move faster CLB can always call him up if needed..

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Will this bring in anybody early? I know these possibilities were talked about and we have very good players coming in, but are they enough?

Cawfee tawk....discuss.........

UW should be covered at D. IF Smith is the only other D to bolt, they'll have nine defensemen next season (McDonagh, Gardiner, Schultz, Ramage, C. Johnson, Springer, R. Little, Simonelli & Drake). They're still OK if someone beyond Smith leaves as they'll still have 8 defensemen.

At forward, I'm hearing they may go with 14 forwards next season or maybe add another uncommitted forward. It doesn't sound like they are inclined to bring in one of the five 2011 forwards early (Strang, Paape, Hartzog, Lapic or Woods).

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Pretty funny sequence tonight during the Detroit/SJ game...after Pavs scored his 2nd, they're talking about him being a UW product, then Heatley gets the puck, loses it to Rafalski, and they continue on about how good UW's program is and their coach Mike Eaves, his son is a Red Wing, then Rafalski scores.

About as good of an ad for the program as possible. :p

Not to mention Pavs had 2g, 1a, Heatley 1g, 1a, and Rafalski a goal. :)

And in the postgame on VS, they said it's the first playoff game in NHL history in which 3 players from one University scored goals, Engblom just glowing. :D

I don't think I've ever heard Engblom make any sort of allusion to the fact that he's a Badger.

Nice to see the love shown for UW in the postgame. I approve.

Engblom was glowing?

good god, between him and Chelios you'd never know they went to Wisconsin. They seem perfectly indifferent to their college years. Glad he was at least somewhat acknowledging his time in Madison

after following or watching guys like Engblom or Chelios over the years it really stands when you hear guys like Heatley or to some extent M. Richter talk about UW. night and day

To be fair, it would be kind of unprofessional if Engblom spent very much of his Vs. air time to talk about his alma mater (it's Vs, not ESPN...), and you won't exactly find him anywhere else.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Yeah I almost never watch the VS intermission and postgame shows, since I can't stand Keith Jones, so I've never really heard Engblom talk about UW either. But it was nice he acknowledged it and was clearly proud last night.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

I see Baggot confirmed the Smith story that I confirmed Tuesday. Regardless, it's nice to hear about McD's possibility of coming back still.

Re: Wisconsin Hockey Part 3: Just win, baby!

Don't forget that Engblom is old. He was at UW 73-74 and 74-75.

Agreed. That's a lifetime ago and even Chelios was here forever ago when you look at all of the hockey he's experienced since then.

I think that the athletic department could do more to bring these guys back in also. Why not have these guys back and introduce them before a game?

The video montage that they created this year is a start, but why not honor the '81 team this year? Why not have a ring of honor or even a banner of honor? We have a tradition that is largely ignored other than saying that "We have a Tradition."
