Wisconsin Hockey 23-24: Hastily Making Wisconsin Hockey Great Again

Oof, looks like the switch to B1G+ comes with student announcers.

They're not nearly as bad as the guys calling the women's hockey games. Those two jokers are pathetic.

Stramel takes two penalties while we've been on the power play. Sit his butt tomorrow night.

Was at the game. Team looked pretty good but hard tell againt a team like Augustana. Whitelaw is the real deal. Him and Silye stood out. Still some of that old d-zone mistakes and shaky puck control by the defenseman. They were very physical. That stood out the most to me. Much more physical than Granatos team. Good effort overall. Got better as they settled in. Saw Granato at the concessions.

What was bad is that there was no band and they used the speakers to play the fight song and other band songs. No sieve chant. Pretty weak atmosphere. Might take a quite a while to fill those stands again.

Solid win. The team looked stronger and better as the game wore on which is a good sign.

The goalie has a great game too!

They played a really solid team game. From what I saw, they were more willing to distribute the puck to other teammates than in past years.

I'm bipolar about you guys. I'll forever hate that you took our lunch money, gave us a wedgie, and left us a smoldering rubble. But I appreciate what Hastings did in Mankato for 11 years, and he even bought me a drink after a game one night. So I'll be keeping an eye on how he does with Wisconsin.

Hard to complain about a shutout win after the last few years, but a couple of observations from the game.

• First the positives, I felt like we played a lot more physical and used our size to our advantage. There were a couple of big hits early on and a lot of blocked shots. Very difficult Ferentz than how the team played under Granato, where we always seemed undersized.

•The Badger power play was uninspiring and close to being dreadful. Most of the pier play opportunities were immediately wasted due to our own bone headed penalties.

• The production quality on B1G+ was dreadful. I’ve never subscribed before, so no idea if this is a carry forward from prior years. I lost count of how many times the production cut away from live action to show a replay or graphic, but it happened after every goal. The times it happened after goals was several minutes after the actual goal and the announcers seemed unaware it was happening, they continued to describe the live action.

Where the hell was the band?

Agreed. I watched on btn+ and watched both women’s games as well.

more physicality, more team first play and some of the forwards really stood out along with Mclellan in net.

the only negatives (and it’s game 1 so it will get ironed out) are bad power play and too many penalties.

Hastings from what I can see so far is the real deal. But also very humble and a good man. It’s not surprising he bought you a beer, and he’ll, in Wisconsin that could really hurt his checkbook

the mavs will be fine I think, your new coach is really good as well.

I thought it was a pretty decent first game, and they got better as the game went on. The only annoying thing that seemed to carry over from the previous administration was a stupid penalties. That will get ironed out.

The goals that were scored were very skilled shots and the goalie stopped everything he should have. 2 excellent developments. Whitelaw, Palodichuk, Tassy, Fitzgerald and Finley were really impactful newcomers.

The band not being there is an excusable.

The passing and willing to navigate the d-zone to neutral zone to o zone (transition play) is superbly better already.

McClellan made some great saves in the 1st period.

Good to get the sweep!

penalties and a poor power play will get ironed out by the coaches.

Tassy, Fitzgerald, Silye, Finley all stood out to me. I forget which former MSU-M player it wa but one of them made some stick handling moves that reminded me of Reinprecht.

the goalie I thought was very solid.

all they need is some time and they’ll be a very tough team to beat.

It definitely felt like Saturday was everyone knocking off the rust - both the team and BIG+.

BIG+ - the first period, the wide view ice the color was washed out. They corrected this. The cut-aways are linked to whatever is playing on the scoreboard. I feel like they got better with this in the 2nd & 3rd period. I was at the game on Sunday, so I'm not sure if this is any better. I'm not opposed to student broadcasters, it seems like a good way to grow some talent.

Team - penalties seemed a lot better on Sunday. Still a few stupid decisions, but nowhere near as bad as Saturday. All-round it was a better effort than almost any game last year. Sure, Augustana isn't good, but neither were Lindenwood ( 4-3 and 5-1 wins) or LIU (3-2 and 4-3OT wins) last year. Plus, with the extra COVID eligibilty and transfer portal, Augustana does have older, experienced players.

Yes that was very apparent from watching up high at the game Sunday in person. Plus the passes were hard and confident. They also seemed like they wanted to move the puck quickly via passes and not skate with it. Bantle's goal was off a great pass. Augustana definitely tightened up their play in front of their net, but the lads did enough to win.

McClellan was in control and on angle.

The bar will get raised this weekend, but getting some confidence and plenty of tape to fix things before a tougher games is awesome.

There was plenty of beer being consumed in the area I was sitting in. It should help the gross income of the team. I doubt they'd be drinking this much soda if that was all that was available and I'm guessing the margin is better on beer.

I can echo Tim and Booya that the D play was much more sound. We covered the front of the net, and weak side cutters better than anytime last year. They also had better clearing. And more physicality. The competition takes a huge step up from here and will be interesting to see how they handle things the next couple weeks.

I’m still not sure how Lindmark scored in the 2nd period and I had a front row view from section 128.

McClellan is the most surprising player so far. I definitely was not expecting back to back shutouts. And it’s not like he didn’t face some tough shots. There were at least 2 or 3 Grade A chances for Augustana on Sunday.

I gave up soda for the year, but man I wish I could drink it during the game. Not a fan of beer personally. The people in front of me were drinking Miller Lite tall boys.

My expectation for this weekend is a split. Bemidji, which is not a state btw, lost to the gophers 5-2 in an exhibition match last weekend. So there’s a measuring stick game.
