Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

It was really frustrating to see the Badgers lose on that kind of clean break after the defense played so well in the whole third (landing every poke check, separating players from the puck, never allowing that kind of play to happen).

Loved how the Badgers battled back after another baffling/disappointing bad start to the game. They had the Gophers on their heels in the third and rang a couple off the pipe. Shaver was robbed on a point blank shot with a nice sprawling save. Even early in OT they had some good looks. Definitely a game they could have won and probably should have got that tie which would have given them the season series over Minnesota. I'll give the Badgers credit going hard for the win, but their aggressive play ultimately cost them the game on the late game-winning 2-on-0 breakaway.

I was really impressed by the play of the 3rd line. Sowchuk had a goal and Welhaussen and Shaver brought a lot of energy and hustle. Didn't see Jones later on in the game and Harding got bumped up to the 2nd line.

Getting Kessel back is clearly a wild card for Minnesota. Seems back to at least 80-90% which still makes her dangerous as hell. It's like a professional team acquiring a player at the trade deadline late in the season. With all the firepower Minnesota has up front, it reminds me how much it sucks that Cianfarano ended up somewhere else. Defense could also use the return of Rolfes, but nobody wants to ask Coach Johnson about her potential availability. Thought with her dressing last Saturday, maybe that was a sign of a future return. If she can't make it back, hopefully she is eligible for a medical redshirt.

Will be nice to get back to the friendly confines of LaBahn this weekend. I think logging a couple more games with the new line combinations will help as things go forward in the playoffs.

Oh, Dan Kelly from BTN is a bit of clown show. After getting down 2, he seriously suggested that Wisconsin might just start looking forward towards next weekend. Was nice to hear Halldorson correct him fairly quickly. Sowchuk scored soon after to put that concept to bed once and for all.

If the Gophers had managed to get a three goal lead, as they came close to several times, it might have happened. Had Pankowski been ejected, as she should have been, things might have gone south for Wisconsin, and during the brief stretch when it was 3-1, I thought the Badgers were getting very frustrated. Nurse's goal changed the game.

I can't argue that Panny got off easy, it should have been a 5.

I don't like the frustration level, they seem to get frustrated kind of easily. If they believe in themselves and trust the process, things will work out as they are meant to be. They also have to recognize they they are playing a better opponent and it's not going to be as easy as last week, just keep grinding away at it (maybe they learned that Saturday). All you can do as a player is play your best and in the end it isn't good enough, tip your cap to your opponent and practice to get better. A corollary thought is maybe they should schedule tougher n/c games that will push them, but the wcha is tough enough.

If it's any consolation, Minnesota was very frustrated during the second game in Madison in December. Highly-competitive people want to excel, and when they don't, it isn't always easy to manage.

Easy for me to say, but you have to keep your composure under duress, trust the process, trust the system.

It's going to be a tough series coming up for UW. I don't see any 8-1 games in the future of this weekend. I am expecting lights out D and at least 1 s/o for ARD. It will just be a matter of can UW beat 6 goalies and get a few in the first and second to make the 3rd period inconsequential, lighthearted and fun for the home fans. I hope the Band is there, that would be awesome. I can only hope to get assaulted by gum wrappers again. :)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

I thought the 3rd line for UW was actually their best line during the series vs. UM last week. Actually they may be UW's best line over the past few weekend. Making the move of putting Wellhausen on that line causes some match-up problems for their opponents. All kinds of speed at both wings now with Baylee and Sophia Shaver.. Sowchuck is a very responsible center as well! Great mix!

I agree, I just hope Clarky doesn't suffer, it seems that Cogan and Panny work well together and Clark's not such a large presence on that line.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

That's a great point Tim A. Even though Wellhausen's point production wasn't so high when she was on the first line, she did do a lot of the gritty/dirty work to free up the puck and was most of the time the first player in on the fore check. I think she has the puck more on her stick on the third line. Not to take anything away from the skill of a Pankowski or a Clark but, it can be hard to play with 2 such puck dominating players. Cogan seem to be able to create with Pankowski. Clark and Wellhausen were similar players in that they are both very speedy and quick. They complimented each other well. Wellhausen would dig the puck out off the boards and Clark would have space to create. - similar to what the Wellhausen and Shaver combination is. Since the change in lines was made it seems that Clark is now more of the grinder/digger. Also, when the line of Pankowski, Clark, and Wellhausen was together in Madison the first time playing UM they were great at shutting down the Gophers top line all weekend. Taking Wellhausen off that line takes away some of the speed that was so important in both ends of the ice. again, sometimes success doesn't always show up on the score sheet!

Last season the wife and I parked in the parking garage kitty corner to the Nitty Gritty. Had to pay I believe 8 dollars but, we were very close to LaBahn.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Lets hope all the line combinations gel this weekend for the Badgers! There does seem to be more balance within the top 3 lines since coach Johnson made the switch! We are driving down to Madison tomorrow afternoon. It should be a fun weekend!

How long is your trip?

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Game. The first period was a little disjointed for UW (with interference not helping, see paragraph 2) and , the second and third were awesome, especially the 2nd, it was like a 20 minute power play. I think some Kato players ended up with a 5 minute shift with the bench on the far end, it was awesome. They beat Quade 3 times w/o scoring, one got through early but caught the back of her skate, died in the blue patch and was cleared. There were 2 other posts, sniper shots. So many chances that did not connect with pucks going through the slot to the backside. Need to shoot off the pass ladies, come on!

Refereeing. In a word, atrocious. Hanrahan and Gulenchyn. The first period it was clear Kato's strategy was to interfere until they got caught, which they never got called on. All sorts of transitional rubbing going on. A uw player got pulled down with the puck, no call. Pankowski CFB'ed again, no call. The 2nd period was worse. A uw player gets nailed open ice with an elbow to the head on a full body check, no call. Even the Kato assistant coach was shocked there was no call on that. He just shook his head. Another CFB by a uw player, no call. A kato player with the puck gets pulled down - called a penalty on UW, the crowd went nuts. HORRIBLE. The crowd wanted to get some ropes and find a tall tree by the end of that period. At the end of the 2nd period I told my kids the refs might as well just stay in the locker room and we'll just roll with linesmen, they weren't doing anything anyway. The 3rd period was magically clean, like both coaches told the players to knock it off or something. If that had not happened there was going to be some rough stuff for sure.

Not a sellout, but the crowd was great, maybe the best crowd of the year. Band was awesome. I love that the players do Varsity at the end of every game now with the crowd, very cool.

Great that ARD tied the rat for most shutouts in a season, let's break it tomorrow and beat the rodent.

http://www.uwbadgers.com/news/2016/2/25/womens-hockey-desbiens-pankowski-earn-spots-on-patty-kazmaier-top-10-list.aspx

Congrats to Ms. Desbiens & Ms. Pankowski for being Top 10 finalists for the Kazmaier. Great players and, from what I gathered in the article, great students and doing great things within the community.

Sort of bittersweet though since, with one recent exception when they didn't have the choice, the Kas has ended up going to a player not on the National Championship team, I already have them penciled in for that so their odds are not as good as they should be.
