Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

4 - 0!!!

That's a result which must worry all UW fans and MJ.

If they rebound today, then they can breathe again.

I posted in the past that ARD was a good goalie, and others mentioned that every once in a while a goalie can have one of those games where it is just not going to go their way.

This was the first game (I think) that the Badgers and ARD have seen 30 shots plus.

Today is another test, and it's really interesting to see how ARD and the team respond.

If a goalie has a bad game in the ECAC, the next day they face a new opponent. Not so in the WCHA. Imagine the internal questions if a similar result happens today. Levielle must have had a good game and confidence is everything. Kessel is having the impact that many predicted.

Today's game will set the tone for UW and UM for the post season. If UM wins and by a bunch, me thinks they should move to #2 and should be the Fav to win the league.

If UW faces BC at some point, there will for sure be 30+ shots coming at ARD. Today is a very cool test of resilience.

That's right, I think. They saw 28 from Midj on 1/15 and allowed no goals; 29 from NoDak, 1/23, no goals; 28 from NoDak, 1/24, 1 goal. Those 1/15 and 1/23 games are pretty impressive shutouts.

The first goal was really soft, a shot from the top of the circle with absolutely no obstruction and no lateral passing that got through the five hole. After that, it was hard to tell the extent to which Desbiens had a bad game, or the defense in front of her got overrun. The puck spent almost the entire first twelve minutes sitting in her crease.

Levielle must have had a good game and confidence is everything.

For Leveille, rebound control is everything. When she has a bad game, it usually involves leaving gimmes in front of her. Last night, she was kicking them all to the right places.

Today's game will set the tone for UW and UM for the post season. If UM wins and by a bunch, me thinks they should move to #2 and should be the Fav to win the league.

In the unlikely event that Minnesota wins 4-0 again, I'm probably moving them to #1 in my poll entry. That would be a weekend unlike anything BC has had all year.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

After UW swept UM earlier in the year, they were on a mega high. They went to the sue and laid a rotten egg the next game out, a 3-0 loss. Last weekend was a another mega high, clinching the league title on Sr. day, then they go to UM and lay another rotten egg, though statistically they played better than they did at the sue, but alas, a rotten egg is a rotten egg. To me that's a bad pattern. I almost don't want them to win the wcha tourney, so they don't lay a rotten egg in the first round of the ncaa's. They did bounce back and play much better the 2nd game against the sue, so I am hopeful that a pattern is there as well.

I am disappointed about the first goal that by multiple reports was soft. I have not seen her give up a soft goal all year, but a goalie is going to make a batch of cupcakes once and awhile. Hopefully that will be it for the year. I'm most disappointed in them not scoring on the 5 on 3 when it was 2-0. It was their chance to help ARD out and get one back and get back into the game.

I listened to the first period of the game on 92.1 for the first time as I worked 12 hrs yesterday, Reid Magnum does a great job, very impressed. When I got home, I decided to watch the men's game and follow the women on twitter. Yesterday ended up just being a sucky day with the amount of hours I worked, then the awful results in hockey.

It's A Great Day For Hockey. Let's go RED!

Was a brutal 24 hours for Badger sports. Men's basketball and women's hockey get smoked on the road to a rival and men's hockey continues their death march by losing at home to a bad Michigan State game.

Due to some other social obligations, was only able to follow the game on Twitter and clearly that was for the best. Clearly the hostile crowd (probably the first the Badgers have played in front of all year) and Minnesota/Kessel 2.0 had them off their game early. Sounds like it was a better game later on, but too little too late. Upside is that they held Minnesota scoreless on the PP, but not sure the last time the Badgers gave up 4 even-strength goals. Not scoring on a 5-on-3 is unacceptable and could have changed the momentum somewhat.

I'll be surprised if today's game isn't much closer. I don't expect Desbiens to have back-to-back bad games. However, my bigger concern is scoring. I'm sticking to my point that they need 3 goals to beat the Gophers (though wouldn't have been enough last night). Sounded like there were some opportunities, but couldn't cash them in. Against a team like Minnesota, that is death.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

It was really frustrating to see the Badgers lose on that kind of clean break after the defense played so well in the whole third (landing every poke check, separating players from the puck, never allowing that kind of play to happen).

Had they lost 4-0 again today, it might have been different.

But I'm finding no problem whatsoever thinking to myself "Darn... oh well... what's next?"

WCHA regular season champs, split with UM, all games won by home teams, one OT in each pair of games, ranked 2 or 3 in the national polls.

"Oh well... what's next?"

Wisconsin got down by the 2 goals and got a gift 5-hole goal on Leveille and they had life. They were the better team in the third period as the Gophers appeared out of gas. The great thing from these games at the end of the year is the competitiveness and both teams talking time and space away from each other. Something that a certain team out east doesn't get.

What a great game to watch with my kid. Great players all around. Great effort. What college sports are all about.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

First, it was a great game on both sides. I agree that UW had control in the third period. The Gophers dodged a bullet by forcing overtime. I also expect the Gophs would have lost a shootout.

Off the ice, though, I have a bone to pick with some Badger faithful who started a "high school band" chant toward the Gopher band members in the third period. To those fans specifically...

1) You didn't have to sit where you did.
2) I'd expect the Badger band to cheer over Gopher fans sitting by them at LaBahn. Get some thicker skin.
3) There's a band at more than 25% of the Gopher women's hockey home games.
4) Try learning more than 1 cheer (not counting the insult).

Benjamin Worgull @ the BadgerNation tweeted yesterday that Wisconsin should "give Mark Johnson a shot" coaching the men's team and "there is nothing more he can do in the women's game".

Well, first, I get what he means but the experience that he provides to the young women of each class that come through the Wisconsin program is a lot more than nothing.

Is Benjamin Worgull an influential guy around Badger athletics?
Do you think Barry Alvarez' guys would end up deciding that the time for MJ to be the men's coach at Wisconsin has come and gone and end up picking somebody else?
If he took the job now he'd be walking out on his daughter's senior year.

I'll defer to Badger fans on the likelihood...but looking at the men's position in The Big Ten and assuming there is a motivation for change I think they'd be foolish not to consider MJ.

Here's my take on MJ and the men's job: At this point I don't think he's the right fit. The 1980 Olympic glory doesn't hold much water anymore. Right now some of the kids being recruited fathers were infants or little kids when that happened. I think the recruiting landscape is totally different. In the women's he's competing with a handful of teams for the best recruits. On the men's side he's competing with maybe 35 other teams for the very good players and 10 to 15 for the best. He'd have to work way, way harder to get them to the top 16 talentwise than he does now on the recruiting trail. He's not a young guy and it's going to take 4-6 years to fix that roster because the next 3 years are practically filled already. He's also not a rah rah type of guy, he's pretty low keyed, I'm not sure he'd be the right type of salesman the men's team will need to motivate the masses. I think he's do fine motivating the players and on the X's and O's. That's my .02.

Worgull is a recruiting dude who knows FB and BB, he doesn't know hockey.

I would say that "nothing more to prove" might be the better comment. Got the program up to speed pretty much right out the gate, four national titles, two additional title games, two more additional Frozen Four appearances. Looking at the current roster (and incoming class) they are looking to keep competing at high level for the time being.

He's been able to coach his daughter for 4 years. I can virtually guarantee that if given the opportunity to coach the men's team, his whole family would be fully on board.

It will be very interesting to see how the men's position plays out. There are a lot of qualified candidates out there, though I have to believe that Coach Johnson would get serious consideration if interested. Alvarez wasn't part of the Eaves/Johnson decision back in early 2000's, so I don't think he'll feel any obligation to hire him now.

Both the UW men's and women's seasons will probably end on the same weekend so things will probably ramp up quickly after that. However, Alvarez will also be making decisions with the men's basketball team and probably/hopefully the women's basketball team.

Thanks for the link. I was kind of shocked that she wasn't higher on the scoring table being the best of the best, but obviously her intangibles are off the chart. My enthusiasm is a little tempered by the fact that Karley Sylvester was also a Ms hockey, and she while a solid player, was not the superstar one would think of when considering she won the award. It looks like some other former winners have made nice names for themselves. ;)

last I checked, the award isn't to recognize which person will be the next college superstar ( although it pays to keep this in mind: "selected based on votes from a panel of high school coaches and Division I and III college coaches from Minnesota and Wisconsin"
really, it's more to celebrate girls hockey in MN, having an award like this puts the spotlight on the sport, its players, coaches, and everyone else who makes it the sport it is. Obviously they try to pick a deserving winner

Also have to factor in that she played in the toughest conference in the state. Going into the state tournament, 4 of the 7 top seven teams were out of the Lake Conference. Add that with her recent experience with Team USA, I fully expect her to step right in and contribute next year.

No matter where the players come from, never really know for sure who is going to turn into a star.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2015-2016

Given we're talking about a league where Red Berenson is one of the head coaches, Johnson could have the men's job for 20 years.

Does he have to promise not to relieve himself on the school library? ;)
