Wisconsin Badgers 2012-2013 - The LaBahn Era Begins

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2012-2013 - The LaBahn Era Begins

It was right on the homepage, in the lower right corner "above the fold" (aka, if you don't scroll down). Below the big "Headlines" section, to the right of the standings, and above "campus news. It looks a little bit like an advertisement which you might overlook, but other than that, I think you might be kicking yourself if you go and take another look!

I think I see it. It's all my wife's fault anyway, she didn't see it either. Oh well, it would have just been frustrating as some have alluded to.

I just wanted to say a sincere thank you to this year's team. They once again put forth extraordinary effort and came up just a tad short of another NCAA bid. And man, will I miss seeing Brianna Decker out there. Just astonishing, jaw-dropping performances every time she touched the puck. I swear she expended more energy than a lot of teams do. Anyway, my thanks to all the women on the team, and I'm looking forward to next year.

I agree, and thought the very same every time I saw UW play.

I don't know. I'm not going to really miss not seeing Decker out there in Cardinal and White with a "W" on her jersey. I've adjusted quite well over the years to no Bauer, no Lawler, no Duggan, no Knight. I'll find a way to manage only seeing the former Badgers' #18 on Team USA as well.

Seriously, congratulations to Brianna on a great career at Wisconsin.

Here's hoping Decker ends up playing with the Boston Blades in the near future as well. I'm not sure what the CWHL is going to do next year when a good chunk of their current players will be centralized with Team USA and Team Canada. I got a chance to see Hilary Knight, Meghan Duggan, Gigi Marvin, Jen Schoullis, Anne Schleper, and Jessica Koizumi all playing nicely together on the same roster last Sat. evening - Badgers, Gophers, and Bulldogs on the same happy bench. :)

I have never seen a CWHL game but I think we will hear a lot of Decker's name in the future. Who knows maybe next year someone will step up and be outstanding.

IMO, the big question for the Badgers next year is will you have Rigsby?

I'm guessing this is Olympics related, so I thought I'd ask -- why do players miss entire seasons for the Olympics?

If they play for most European countries, then they don't. The last Olympics cycle was the first time that a European team did, as Sweden centralized. The USA and Canada have always centralized. That means that the entire team gathers at one location for some number of months and plays a schedule of games to prepare for the Games. Players may still be able to enroll in some classes at their university and study remotely, but practicing and playing for a college team isn't feasible.

I think they would do just fine without her. They may have more goals scored against them but that means they just need to score more.

ARM, would you agree that a key element of the centralization process is that the coaches are able to get a much closer look at all of the invitees, over a period of months, to better evaluate and then select their final Olympic roster? Having them practice, train and play together for more than just a few exhibition games helps them choose the "right" players as opposed to just a collection of the most talented individuals, i.e. it allows them to put all the right pieces together to form the best possible TEAM, in addition to building the best PREPARED team.

To improve on this past season they'll need to score more regardless, but if Rigsby does return they likely wouldn't have to improve offensively quite as much. If Rigsby doesn't return, are they counting on incoming frosh Desbiens to take over? I see that neither of the current rostered tenders played any minutes this past season.

I have no idea about that. I'd imagine that the key part of centralizing is to turn a collection of individuals into a team, by living, training, practicing, and playing games together. In most cases, there probably aren't that many personnel decisions that change along the way. Coaches know who they like fairly early on in the centralization process would be my guess, but that's all it is -- a guess.

Jorie Walters shutout the Whitecaps in exhibition play for what that's worth. If Rigsby makes the Olympics and McKeough and Ammerman can't come back, it will be a rebuilding year. Incoming class looks pretty good, but not sure who the impact players will be.

If Rigsby is gone, UW is in big trouble trying to match the rodents, though raty will be gone. Is Vetter still eligible to play in the Olympics?

Pretty sure Vetter is still eligible (and presumably interested) in playing for Team USA next year. If Rigsby does make the team, the 2014-2015 Wisconsin team would shape up pretty well with the talent coming in and the current underclassmen getting better (ideally).
