Wisconsin Badgers 2012-2013 - The LaBahn Era Begins

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2012-2013 - The LaBahn Era Begins

Pretty sure Vetter is still eligible (and presumably interested) in playing for Team USA next year. If Rigsby does make the team, the 2014-2015 Wisconsin team would shape up pretty well with the talent coming in and the current underclassmen getting better (ideally).

Agreed about 14-15, but next season would not be as great as it could be and I'd rather not sit through a full out rebuilding year with Rigsby gone. Maybe I am not giving enough credit to Walters, she put up really good number @ Shattuck. Her twitter handle is "BRICK WALLters 1", she's got plenty of confidence. Coming from that program was she highly touted? Was I seeing things of was UW also bringing in another goalie next year?

According this site, there is a goalie from the Canadian U-22 team coming in, but nothing about this is being reported locally. If true, I would say that they would be at least decent in goal next year if Rigsby is gone. I'm more concerned about scoring, but help seems to be on the way.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2012-2013 - The LaBahn Era Begins

So when will the women's schedule for this up coming year get finalized? I'm itching to know if I can make season tickets work out in the family schedule.

No word on Ammerman's redshirt possibility or if she'll ever play again?

Last year the schedule was released during the summer.

I wonder if Theresa Knutson is on Johnson's radar. She must be, I found her in SI. Only a So in HS who has scored 177 pts in 47 games. Granted WI girls HS hockey is probably pretty weak overall, but averaging 3.77 pts per game as an underclassman anywhere in the US is a heck of an accomplishment. She is from Onalaska, hopefully she doesn't have any rodent leanings being so close to the border.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2012-2013 - The LaBahn Era Begins

Was Knutson a Central District selection for National Camp this year? I did not notice her on the list that came out a couple of weeks ago. I believe she is a 1996 birth year and a junior in high school. I'm sure she is a great kid, but girls high school hockey in Wisconsin is VERY weak! Lots of points against not so good competition. Not sure if that equals a spot on one of the best D-1 programs in the country...

She made Select 16's but doesn't appear to be on the Select 17 list.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2012-2013 - The LaBahn Era Begins

Here is a list of the forwards that did make the Select 17's National Development Camp from the Central District this year: Grace Zarzecki (Ill.), Bailey Larson (Ill.), Amanda Conway (Ill.) and Baylee Wellhausen (WI.). Zarzecki, Wellhausen, and Larson have made it to the NDC all 4 years with Zarzecki and Wellhausen also being members of the USA U-18 team. Again, not to take anything away from Knutsons accomplishments, but IMO she isn't the same level of player these four are. If you look at the current roster and the incoming freshman at the University of Wisconsin you will see that all of the American players recuited have been to the NDC at LEAST 3 times with most having been there 4 times. Coach Johnsons top recruits have playing experience with the USA or Canadien U-18 teams as well. I just do not think that playing girls high school hockey in the state of Wisconsin develops a player enough to play at a top level D-1 program. Knutsons offensive numbers are impressive, and I'm sure she will play somewhere at the next level. But to suggest she is on Coach Johnsons radar IMO is a stretch. This was her final year to make the U-17's at NDC. And even after the season she had, she was NOT chosen out of the Central District. In fact the only player at the U-17 age group chosen from the state of Wisconsin was Baylee Wellhausen who plays at SSM and happens to be a UW 2014-2015 commit. I rest my case...
She made Select 16's but doesn't appear to be on the Select 17 list.

The UW men may play an afternoon game or 2 with the new b6 conf. I wonder what impact they will have on scheduling women's games. Maybe they'll get a 7pm start time. It might be cool to have the men and women play a double header at the KC, 1 ticket gets you into both games.

I'll echo what I said in the other thread - I think they'll just continue to work around the men's schedule, but it will just look a little different.

I would be surprised at a single-admission double header (they haven't done it at the Kohl Center in previous years, from what I can tell), but I would certainly enjoy it.

I'm surprised all these marketing geniuses have come up with this one yet. If they make it no re-entry after the gal's game in the afternoon they'll sell a lot more concessions. Hey Barry.....more money! Gotta have the greenbacks!

Knutson was at the Central District tryout, but there are a lot of good players in the Central District. She will likely be considered for an at-large selection, but there are others who might be ahead of her including a kid who made the all-star team at National Camp last year (which Knutson didn't).

As far as being on UW's radar, they are looking at the top 5-10 players in the US. Kinda tough for any player.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2012-2013 - The LaBahn Era Begins

How does the at-large selection process work? I talked to a few people who were at the Central District tryouts and they told me that 3 of the 4 forwards that were chosen to the NDC at the U-17's (1996 birth year) were obvious selections. They clearly stood out among the rest. Were you there? Not sure how they pick from the rest for at-large or even how many more are added.

Well, it would be tough to watch all the games to fairly evaluate - there were 8 teams (96/97 combined) and only 3 games per team. So, unless a parent made a real effort, you didn't see half the kids. (I certainly didn't make the effort, but I have seen all of the "top kids" play countless times). None of the picks should be a surprise to anyone who is really familiar with this level. Again, there are a couple other really good forwards and defense out there. I believe how the at-large process works is the Central District submits a short list of recommended at-large picks, but USA Hockey decides. At the U-16 level, I would say the same thing - no surprises, except maybe 1 F and 1 D getting last contested spot from a number of players in the running.

(For you UW folks - if you want to talk about a Wisconsin kid who should be on UW's radar - get on the Prater (97D) bandwagon.)

There's no mention in the awards banquet about McKeough being honored as a Sr, though she was one last year. Does this imply she took a red-shirt for last year and will be back this year?

On the Facebook banquet picture with the seniors, she was the only one not holding her jersey. I interpret that as she is coming back for her second senior year.

That would be freaking awesome! Someone needs to ask Johnson about her and Ammerman's possible redshirts.

I emailed someone and they told me Ammerman will be back as a redshirt and there is nothing for sure on McKeough yet, so some good news for sure on the scoring front.
