Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Mentioned on Twitter that UW at #1 is how it should be and got trolled hard core by a North Dakota fan that Madison fans are on drugs and that by saying so I was saying the Sunday tie was acceptable. That's a non-sequitor, but the trolling was pretty hilarious.

Clearly losing the two-goal lead was not in character for the team, but its not as though the girls got swept. And they've still got the best record in the country while playing the most difficult conference - not sure what other qualifications there may be for being ranked #1.

As a UND Women's Hockey fan, I am smart enough to see that UW IS the #1 team in the country. Idalski even said in the press conference before the weekend, something along the lines of wanting to be a team like the Badgers (top team, excellence). So I apologize, please don't generalize the UND Fans! :)

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Good article on Brooke Ammerman this morning in the State Journal/Madison.com that I can't seem to copy and paste here. Basically talks about her putting up great numbers over her 4 years, but kind of flying under the radar because of playing with higher profile teammates during her career.

Hopefully there will be a decent crowd this weekend againt UMD, but today's 2:00 face-off/bitter cold weather/snow storm rolling in late morning-early afternoon won't help. I'm hoping (probably naively) that the new arena will eliminate or at least minimize the 2:00 Friday games. Even 4:00 would be better.

Anyway, big series for both teams. Badgers can go a long way towards keeping their hold on the WCHA lead and the Bulldogs simply can't afford many more losses to stay in the NCAA mix.

0-0 after one period. Following game on-line via live blog which is rather unsatisfying, but better than nothing...stupid 2:00 weekday games....

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Kelter with a goal early in the second! Josephs and Sylvester with the assists.....and now Packer just scored! Badgers up 2-0...Bulldogs take a timeout...

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Rigsby with a thirty six save shutout for the 2-0 win.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

And the overtime win for the sweet sweep of the evil Bulldogs. It's huge to get out of this weekend with 4 points.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Great weekend for the Badgers. Yesterday was a very entertaining game. Due to some logistical issues (including my regular parking lot next to Kohl being packed by the time I got there), it was tied at 1 before getting in my seat. Not surprisingly, Duluth was playing with a real sense of urgency. I was impressed with the Bulldogs fighting back from a 3-1 deficit. Less impressed with Irwin kicking a Badger laying on the ice, but that's another matter.

Fortuntately, the Badger came out flying in OT and a great rush at the end with Brooke Ammerman burying the game winner less than a minute in.

Also a very good atmosphere with a crowd of almost 3,700 which I think was fairly accurate. To my knowledge, there was no special promotion going on, but I could be wrong. Next Saturday night is Fill the Bowl. While I'm not sure they can break last years crowd of over 10,000, it should be a big crowd. Maybe the band (and some students) will actually grace us with their presence.

With Bemidji rallying for a tie (though losing the shoot-out) against the Gophers, Wisconsin extends their league lead to 6 points with the season series against Minnesota, UMD and North Dakota in the books.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Assuming that there will be somewhat of a band and student section at the Fill the Bowl game on Saturday, I'm curious if they would be able to locate themselves on the opposite side of the rink than they do for men's games. The Badgers shoot at that other end for the 1st and 3rd and would seem to make more sense to have the loud contingent be there instead of their normal place. Maybe there are logistical issues, especially for band equipment, but if you want to better expose the student body to women's hockey (and hopefully rattle the Bemidji goalie in the process), they should be at that end.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

I've wondered why the students don't reverse themselves for the womens games. Admittedly, during most games the student section consists of about 4-5 regulars, but still.

Last year I was impressed with the student turnout at Fill the Bowl. The students gathered on their usual end, but they had most of their area filled up.

Despite the big turnout, there still wasn't a band last year though.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

I just think it's been conditioned that during any hockey game, the students sit on the one end. However, the students (even if only a handful) should be behind the opposing goalie for the 1st and 3rd period.

While I've been a longtime critic of the UW Band and their spotty (at best) attendence for women's games over the years, I'm pretty sure they were at last year's Fill the Bowl. However, I don't think they were there two years ago when they held F.T.B. during a day game. Honestly, besides last year Fill the Bowl and NCAA Quarterfinal game, I don't think the band has been at a game in over a year. It's lazy and disrespectful, but that's another rant for another time...

There has been a lot of good promotion for Saturday's game and would be a little surprised if they don't break 11,000. It was cool that they had the promotion displayed on the basketball scorer's table for a good chunk of last night's BB game on national TV.

Should be a great atmosphere. I hope they continue this once a year even when the new arena is ready to go.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Congratulations on your crowd -- 12,402. Well done, Wisconsin, well done.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Can someone show me in the rule book where if the goalie's helmet comes off the play is dead? And is this limited to just the helmet, or a glove perhaps?

Awesome crowd, awesome game. Bemiji played great as well. They played their system perfectly all night and had sticks in the passing lanes in the neutral zone. Well done Bemiji.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2011-12 - The Drive for Five

Awesome crowd indeed - 12,402. It is great to see the crowds that Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota draw on a regular basis. I hope to make it out to Madison next October when UNH plays there in the new arena - I hope the construction is on schedule but will gladly watch a game in the Kohl Center if it is not ready for action. I think the ruling is just limited to the helmet - I have seen the refs blow the play dead on several occasions during men's college games when the goalie has lost his cage. I checked the NCAA rulebook and it is in section 5.b : "If a player's (including goalkeeper's) mask and/or helmet is displaced, there shall be an immediate whistle."

From what I heard this issue is that they did not blow it dead, they awarded the goal, then reveiwed the goal and waived it off becuase of the helmut becoming dislodged. That is not a reveiwable item I'm told.

So if this is the case, and the helmet isn't dislodged by contact but by the player herself, why wouldn't a goalie dislodge her helmet every time a breakaway occurred? No one's gonna convince me that this play was called correctly, reversing an awarded goal after video review shows a goalie knocked her own helmet off in attempting a save. Bull hockey!
