It comes down to what UCONN brings to the table.
Flag Ship state school. Check
Decent fan base and following. Check
Successful and growing athletic department. Check and it could make the mens basketball conference the best in the country.
Rivalries with existing B10 schools? Check. They would resume rivalry with Rutgers in football and would have a great basketball rivalry with Maryland, Ohio St, and Mich St.

One other perk would be that it might make it a little bit of an easier sell for B10 to host football championships at the Meadowlands and the basketball tournament at MSG.

Let's look at it this way. Football is the only thing that matters. We all know this. It drives the bus. Duh.

Uconn:
Fertile recruiting grounds? No
On-campus stadium? No (and 40K, which is rarely at capacity)
NY market presence? No
Boston market presence? No
Football history? NONE

There's really no compelling reason for any conference (ACC, B1G, etc) to add Uconn and their window is growing smaller and smaller. Adding a program that brings nothing to the table for the 30th tv market is just not happening. Being in this mid major level league now, they are in big trouble with the new tv contract they just got. The program will be hemorraging money and probably die on the vine before the next round of tv negotiations comes up.

In the meantime, it's going to be fun to watch them get railed in the rear end in Hockey East. :D

Butchie, you keep waiting by the phone with upstater and Warde and Susan waiting for the B1G to call. I'm sure they'll call some day (if they accidentally dial the wrong number).

The case against UConn being a good fit for the Big Ten is rock solid.

Unfortunately, several of the same complaints can be leveled against Rutgers as well. Although at least Rutgers is an AAU accredited school.

Not exactly. AAU is also important. If football was the only thing, Maryland would not be joining and J Hopkins wouldn't have gotten a second look. That said, UCONN will not be joining unless they tag along with the likes of UNC.

Think of of us as an expansion team. And we do have some football history. We have players in the first decade of the NFL. We've also have had 5 coaches who played for B1G schools, so far. 2 at Michigan, 1 at Nebraska, and 2 at Penn State.

Speaking of football "tradition", invite us and you'll be able to visit Walter Camp's grave site when you come. :D

Minnesota has a stadium that seats 50K.

We are very well aware of the AAU. The school has the state investing over $1 billion in it.

We have super fertile recruiting ground for every sport except football. We'd absolutely provide pipelines in New England. Right now, the ACC has a stranglehold on the northeast north of New Jersey. Can't see how UConn would be bad long-term for hockey.

I wouldn't say rock solid, at all. We have a few things to work on. The midwest worshiped large public schools while they worshiped private schools here. That's changing.

I will add that I am all aboard the UConn-to-the-Big-10 bandwagon because I would be thrilled to have them out of Hockey East. I couldn't care less how much they would get curbstomped in football.

Having said that, seriously, I cannot believe the delirium this thread.

Oh, and whoever it was (I'm too lazy to scroll up) who said that the ACC grabbed Syracuse to "appease" BC loses all credibility and is clearly talking out their azz. Why the actual kcuf would the ACC give a fraction of a crap about appeasing BC?

That is not a hypothetical question.

BC was crying about the possibility of UConn being added to the ACC, according to your own AD. He said he wanted to protect their "turf". Ironically, Boston doesn't even care about BC.

Anyhow, I am done with this thread. Just thought some might find it interesting in knowing UConn is on the radar. We do have some support amongst B1G alumni, even in CT. We're talking about a future where public schools will dominate. I could imagine the future will last longer than 100 years of "tradition" in the past. Private schools used to dominate collegiate athletics. Not anymore.

UConn basketball alone is more popular (even women's basketball) in the Boston-NYC area than anything BC. Our football program does have a nice upside. People act as if the state of CT is irrelevant in football. The game was codified very heavily by a man from here. And Yale has more championships than anyone else, besides Princeton.

In regard to that part you quoted, Butchie really isn't trolling. He truly believes these minute things matter and that makes CT some historically relevant state in football. I think it is cute and if it helps him sleep better at night with his gold Uconn fob and Aaron Hernandez gloves, then I say let's not rain on his parade.

Oh good, you found 1 NFL player so that means the state of CT is amazing at producing football talent. Fantastic logic there mr rolleyes. I think if you do some research you'll discover CT is about middle of the pack (tied for 26th in 2012 NFL roster data, which I'm sure you'll agree with can be extrapolated to the NCAA level to some degree).
