Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I'm not saying I like the usage of definition number 2.... But it's there and is there in most dictionaries. Saying to look it up in a dictionary is a rather foolish way to voice displeasure with its usage. The dictionary will side with both uses since 1903.

"I jest, but it is precisely this type of disputed usage that has people riled, and when they find that it is included in Oxford Dictionaries, they can react as if the world is literally coming to an end. What may surprise them is to find that this usage is much older than you would think. While it is true that it has become increasingly common in modern usage, it was actually first included in the OED in 1903. When the entry was updated and published online in September 2011, we found even earlier examples of this usage – our earliest example is currently from 1769."

Yeah, dictionaries that try to make headlines and stay relevant by adding pop culture words. I can't wait for next year's OED to have "Totes" in it as shorthand for "totally". Woof

Definition of LITERALLY

1
: in a literal sense or manner : actually <took the remark literally> <was literally insane>
2
: in effect : virtually <will literally turn the world upside down to combat cruelty or injustice — Norman Cousins>

Definition 2 has been in there a long time...

Gotta love two definitions of the same word that literally cancel each other out. I gave up on the English language when Webster included "irregardless" as a synonym of "regardless". :p
