Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I've always heard that Illinois would be the next B1G school to add Hockey IF anyone does. It may have been already discussed here but I actually haven't heard of Nebraska-Lincoln wanting to start a D-1 Hockey program. Can someone verify that with a link (I'm too lazy to look).

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I distinctly remember Nebraska's AD Tom Osborne in an interview right after the B1G was announce commenting that he has a lot more interest and support for adding mens soccer than starting a hockey program. A soccer field is a lot less costly expense than a ice arena.

Except that Tom Osborne is now the lame duck AD, is gonzo on January 1, and being replaced by the guy that was basically in charge of building the Kohl Center at Wisconsin and is someone coming from a college hockey background.

Nebraska's new basketball arena that is almost complete tested their ice making capability recently.

The ice making capability isn't new info and no word on UNL actually having interest on a team.

"If UNL makes a decision they want a hockey team, we're ready for them," arena Director of Operations, IJ Rosenblum, said.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

Lacross is just lawn hockey for morons who never learned how to skate to play the real deal!
Does that include Northern Michigan's Mitch Jones, who also plays in the National Lacrosse League for the Vancouver Stealth?

Get used to this possibility because we are on the B1G's radar: UConn.

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

I'm not the best person to comment on the odds of Nebraska adding hockey, but I certainly like how it's being discussed by a group of people who aren't all hardcore hockey fans. I don't agree with everything they are saying, but it's still a pretty good discussion to read. I like it simply for the fact that it's Nebraskans talking hockey. Not what most would consider a traditional hockey state. But it shows something that many hoped would happen with the B1G forming. Having a large conference like that draws attention. It gets people wondering. Building fan interest and demand for the sport is only a first, very premature step, but it's an important one.

Just stumbled on to the thread... but understand this about Nebraska and hockey: It has three successful USHL teams: Omaha, Lincoln and Tri Cities (Kearney). Lincoln traditionally leads the USHL in attendance at more than 4000 per game in an old horse barn that lacks amenities but has a great atmosphere.

Now, you can debate if that shows potential for the University of Nebraska to draw decently (once you add in students and other university base) or is too formidable of competition for the Cornhuskers to overcome. But don't discount the idea of hockey because it's in the state of Nebraska.

I guess you could say it's not traditional because it doesn't necessarily produce players, but it does produce fans by the thousands...

Re: Who will be the 7th member of the Big Ten Hockey Conference?

After adding Rutgers and Maryland, anything's possible.
Some people might not like those additions but they are very wise additions. UConn (and maybe Kansas or Mizzou) is likely the next logical step for many reasons. I honestly prefer the Hockey East for hockey. But a few other sports get priority.

Yeah, would have to agree with ya on that. If they think Rutgers isn't doing enough to lock up the NYC market, UCONN would be in play. Of course, with as probably as active as alumni groups are within the NYC area are, I would think that Rutgers would be getting a big boost in ticket sales, filling seats, and helping the B1G network break into the cable market there.

UConn athletics is superior to Rutgers athletics. Easily. I know Michigan alumni here who want UConn in the B1G. Not only would UConn help the B1G grab more of the NYC market but it would also help penetrate New England and maybe NY state along the Hudson River. Hartford-New Haven alone is the largest market without a professional franchise right now, ranking at #30.

From a hockey perspective, UConn would be a slam dunk for the B1G (pun intended). No brainer. We just need a new rink.

Let's see....UConn brings in no new market, doesn't upgrade the conference athletics(particularly football), is a sub-par academic school, and their premiere sport was just banned from the postseason for APR issues. NOT A GOOD FIT.

One correction - "their premier sport" is girls basketball. Now how can the B1G resist? Let the money come rolling in!
