We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Certainly plenty of work to do from the team perspective. Long term I mean. I think the PK is the worst in college hockey or close to the worst. and the pp is not far behind. these have to be better.
Shame on Furne for losing his cool. Once again, we just have to get better every day.
I refuse to simply dwell on the negative.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

I'm sure I've posted this before, but I still fail to see what is the big problem for the WCHA in the post-BTHC era. The WCHA only stands to lose two programs (WI and MN) leaving the conference with 10 teams and three or four legit national contenders (DU, CC, UND, UMD). Even the CCHA for that matter only drops three teams down to eight and likely by then has UNH as well giving them nine. Unless 3-4 teams start dropping their programs I really can't see there being a major reshuffling of hockey conferences. I think most conferences would be fine with 8 teams and just hope for some future expansion at other schools. The WCHA covers a lot of geography and the odds of them finding another team down the road due to expansion is pretty good.

Check back with me in two-three years and we'll see,

UNH is going to join the CCHA? Do they know that?

CCHA loses at least three, good chance four. They have already said if msu and um leave they are folding. If they fold, the rest of the league is in trouble.

WCHA loses all the big revenue from the final five as it is unlikely that without umtc that it will remain where it is and certainly will not bring in the revenue.
With all the tv money, the bthc can out-recruit the wcha which is not going to be allowed to happen.

'spreader beat me to it.

Here's the doomsday scenario. The CCHA will likely be left with four or five teams, not enough for a conference. Even if all of those programs are bluffing and don't fold right away, Notre Dame and Miami are not likely to sit around in a marginalized CCHA. They will have two options - ask the WCHA to let them join, or get in touch with the WCHA's top 4-6 programs and discuss forming a new western conference without the remaining small budget teams. If you're the AD of either school, you pick the best option for your program, and in this case it's a no-brainer - you want to be in a conference with schools that can spend the money to compete with the BTHC. Overnight, several small budget teams, including Tech and NMU, are out in the cold. Now what?

Maybe we're overreacting, but I still think that scenario is a possibility.

Not to mention, it is an insult to even suggest that a program with Tech's history should drop to a lower division. No. It is D1 or nothing, people.

The last thirty (30) years of Tech history is the real "insult" and as long as the Administration tolerates the Perpetual Losing Culture that is the MTU program, then I vote for "nothing." As my father drilled into me during my youth, "If you are going to do something, do it right, or don't do it at all."

I see no evidence that indicates the Administration believes the Hockey program is part of the MTU tradition, value proposition, component of school pride, etc. It is just another extracurricular activity that appears to be losing the following of the students. That wouldn't be so bad if the program had a low profile, but at the D1 (national) level and playing in big cities like MSP and Denver do we really want the word 'loser' associated with Michigan Tech? (rhetorical question) To borrow another tired cliche heard often during my youth, "Either crap or get off the pot."

BCHL playoffs have started. Justin Fillion's Victoria Grizzlies defeated Sam Labrecque's Naimamo Clippers in five games. Fillion tallied a 0-5-5 line, and Labrecque had a 3-1-4 line for the series.

I'm not so sure that Nortre Dame and Miami would want to go from being headliners in the diluted CCHA to possible middle of the road teams in the WCHA. I guess it comes down to what is more important to them - being in a top tier league or winning on a regular basis. I also don't believe that the Xcel would want to give up the Final Five by their choice. Regardless of the teams, that brings a lot of cash to town. If they did turn it down I would think that the Bradley Center or other pro-grade facility with suitable hotel facilities (UNO?) would love to have the event in their town.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Alright, let's clear this up for everyone. D3. Is. Not. An. Option.

The reason for this, is that Tech hockey could play a D3 schedule, but because the athletic department is designated D2, the team wouldn't be allowed to win any D3 titles. I believe MN-Crookston had that dilemma a couple years ago, and that is why they don't have a program anymore, even after a brand new arena was commissioned for them and the city.

Not to mention, it is an insult to even suggest that a program with Tech's history should drop to a lower division. No. It is D1 or nothing, people.

I think you underestimate the draw power of the 'name' teams. I remember a few years ago, CC came into town ranked #1 in the country. Attendance was probably a little over 2,000 both nights, as Tech took three points and made the WCHA Player/Rookie of the Year look like a fool in net during the Saturday game.

Case in point - even when a small school like CC is highly ranked, only the season ticket holders and a handful of students are interested enough to show up. Now, I am willing to admit that part of this may be attributable to Ian's "marketing" plan, however I would say, with 95% confidence, that the only small school on Tech's schedule that consistently draws more than about 2,200 in paid attendance is "rival" NMU.
Exactly, and I would really think that the powers that be at Tech would really look that favorably at competing in the same league as Finlandia in their other sports, or heck just in hockey as well. D3 just wouldn't work for Tech.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

the Big Ten thing is happening. is this true - the CCHA said they would disband if MSU,UofM and OSU leave? that's pretty harsh.

Tech and the WCHA have a long history, I just can't see them dumping us. (we dump them, well, maybe)

You heard it here second: if Tech beats UND to go to the F5, I'm sporting a Sioux jersey, with photo proof.

Boosh already questioned the claim. It's real, folks. I hate saying it, and will hate it more if you advance, but honestly........

As of Friday, Les Cook is now in charge of the athletic department (replacing ellen horsch) and is supposedly in favor of change. Coincidence that it happened with one week left in the season? Rumor on the street is that last weekend was Russell's last home weekend. We shall see.

I don't either. However if the anti bthc forms due to wcha intransigence, which is a real possibility, then I can easily see Tech left out of it along with mankato, st cloud, bimidji, uaa.
The wcha would be much smarter to include Miami/ and ND, and the two or three remaining CCHA programs and split scheduling into east and west. That would be a 15 team league, possibly a 16 team if bgsu stays in, which I doubt.

on another note, I hope jamie stays because as I said before the only way Tech get's to the top again is to develop a coach good enough. Hiring one won't happen.

Sorry, but... ND and miami would be top 5 quality wcha teams from the start. Don't believe all this wcha garbage about them being that much superior than other leagues. Without a top league they will not get top recruits, so they are going to go to a top league. They already asked the wcha for admittance a year ago and were turned down.
It's not that the excel would give up the final 5, it's that no one relatively would go, since umtc fills half the seats now. So the amount of money from the wcha playoffs would drop off like a stone and small programs that rely on the money wouldn't have it any longer. Plus there could be pressure on the excel to host the bthc playoffs every so often which most likely would conflict.

How did Tech do Saturday night? Do I even want to read back?
