We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Notre Dame was in the WCHA all four years I was at Tech. They were decent but not great and it was a friendly rivalry. I got a kick out of our little school beating them on a regular basis.

I remember coach Lefty Smith used to give a sharp whistle for the line changes which was followed by a chorus of whistling from the fans. Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame left with us for the CCHA but we were the only ones who returned to the WCHA. ND disbanded their Div I team and played at the club level for numerous years before rejoining the CCHA.

The WCHA experience at Tech hasn't been the same since those three left <sigh>. The WCHA should welcome ND with open arms...
I don't think ND is the reason things haven't been the same...just sayin'

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

I'm sure the honor code at BYU is just like rules at other schools. The vast majority of the students will follow the rules and some will choose to break them. Then it's just a matter of how well you know your friends, how much they like you, and in some cases what your own IQ happens to be.
The saying I used a lot when I worked dorm security - If I catch you breaking the rules, you're going to get written up, end of the discussion. First off you broke the rules, but more importantly you were dumb enough to get caught. You want to underage drink? Fine that's your choice, but I recommend you don't do it with your door open in the FYE wing. Want to light up a doobie? Maybe standing outside the back door of Wads isn't a great place to try it.
I don't think any of us here are blind enough to think that just because this report of the honor code being broken at BYU which made ESPN was the first time this year, month, week or likely day that a student broke the honor code at BYU. Heck if you've ever been to Salt Lake City, they act like the drinking laws are real strict and you have to have a "membership" to get into a bar. That's true, but every place in town also has a guy who sits at the door and says "You can be my 'guest' just for today... come on in." if you don't have a membership for that establishment. Then there's the whole "drink with a sidecar" concept to keep the drinks watered down. No one drinks any less in SLC, it's just a show to make things seem better than they are.

But back to Tech - I'm not against a shake up in the hockey program. I don't like losing 30 games either, but I still think letting Jamie go would be a mistake. He needs to be retained with the program in some way shape or form because all things being equal you just can't make someone have a passion for what they do. Sure you could blow 2-million on a coach (if we had the money), but if they don't give a hoot about MTU and just want to use Tech as a stepping stone, are we really better off than we are now? We all focus on the W and L numbers, but I hope the folks making the decisions are considering more than that. For example, would we be happier if Tech ran a "dirty" program where 50% of the kids didn't graduate but we have a 0.500 or better record? So we get mentioned once in a while when the pity card is played and how tough it is for us. Would we rather be mentioned when the team and staff are under investigation for faking grades, poor recruiting practices, pay-outs, drugs, booster involvement and 100 other things that "big" programs get to deal with on a year basis?

I've said it before - be careful what you wish for... I don't think being a clean, but maybe less than successful, program is the worst thing in the world.

Somewhat less than successful is a stretch. MTU is ranked # 52 out of the 58 teams in Division one and has the least wins of any Division 1 school in the country. I am not saying to go out there and cheat but if all the top schools are bending the rules a bit I say MTU needs to join right in. I hope to hear some good news next week.

So do I, but it probably is not the same good news you are looking for.
I am thinking of a certain recruit and looking for his commitment to Tech. If Tech is going to improve much it's going to be thru better players not better coaches.

My biggest ***** is the special teams which have to get a lot better next year.

Players are certainly the key.

The discussion on the fate of MTU and who would be in their conference in a <hypothetical> BTHC world seems to pre-suppose that Tech would suffer in the quality of players that they could attract if they didn't share a conference with the heavyweights. In the past, I also held this view, but honestly, we don't seem to be attracting the big hitters anyways. Maybe Tech is better off in a league with NMU and LSSU and FSU, etc. Recruiting might not sufffer much relative to where we are now, and in the end, we might be better situated for a trip to the NCAAs every 3-4 years.

Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to see Doriott up playing forward, I know he was just doing that while we were down a few forwards and he's dropped back to D again now that we're mostly healthy. He looks good up on the wing, but with that list we have 20 forwards, so he probably won't

Did we get an exception from the NCAA to be able to roll 7 lines? Sweet! Fresh legs!

First thing I hear at work this morning, Les Cook taking over the Athletic Department from Ellen Horsch, ****, rumors round the water cooler got slowed down, ehh, at least we know it's confirmed.

So did Ellen Horsch step down or did the Athletic Department move from being under the Vice President for Administration to being under Vice President for Student Affairs?

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

From what I'm hearing, they want the Athletic Department under Student Affairs, expect a formal announcement ~March 14th

It was also suppose to be hush-hush, but Les can't keep his mouth shut, blabbing to all the locals

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

It could be a great thing for the hockey program. I agree with those who have pointed out that accountability needs to start up top, I hope Les will put the right pressure on in the right places to get things moving. And I hope he knows what those places are, because I don't claim to.

Here's the group that oversees hiring of new athletic staff.

All of a sudden, a lot more things make sense.

The best case scenario here is that Mroz is directing Cook to give us a hockey program we can be proud of and the authority, not to mention resources , to make it happen. With those marching orders, if Cook is like most executives he will clean house and bring his own people in. As long as the guy is going to be held accountable for performance, he has to have ownership of the program and the loyalty of his subordinates. I'll bet real money that either the AD or Head Coach is replaced, if not both.

Here's the group that oversees hiring of new athletic staff. And here's the current organizational chart.
oooohhhhhh...wow.......nevermind me people, nothing to see here

edit: this is in no way a judgement of these peoples' abilities to oversee the athletic department, for all I know they could be the worst group ever to be assembled, or they could be greatest athletic program minds in the country (though that is doubtful)...I just had a bit of a blast-from-the-past

I can't see Suzanne being fired, because among other reasons including gender balance being the admitted primary consideration of new hires, the girls treehockey team just won some game and will host some tournament which is said to be a big deal.
