We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

As of Friday, Les Cook is now in charge of the athletic department (replacing ellen horsch) and is supposedly in favor of change. Coincidence that it happened with one week left in the season? Rumor on the street is that last weekend was Russell's last home weekend. We shall see.

Well it would be that Les Cook would be Vice President for Administration, which is the position above Suzanne's. Les Cook graduated from Utah State.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

I just read back. The doomsday scenario with the bthc is going to happen, and it will destroy college hockey. Look at Atlantic hockey right now, that is what a conference with MTU, NMU, LSSU, FSU, WMU, BGSU, and UAH would end up being. It is ugly.

As soon as the bthc forms, the rest of the big names will scramble to for the anti-bthc, and we'll get DU, UND, Miami and Notre Dame leading the charge for a new conference. DU would bring CC along, UNO would get in with their geography and future new arena. That makes six teams. I would guess that they'd want 8, and UMD, SCSU and UAA would all be on that list to fill the last spot before Tech. If the MN schools decide they can't pull it financially, then maybe Tech gets the nod. But I don't expect UMD to go that route with Amsoil now open.

I don't really see the anti-bthc happening.

Very interesting timing for this move. If you are correct I would guess we will here that Coach Russell & assistants are gone ( with appropriate payoff ) after the North Dakota playoff series this weekend. Then they can get going immediately on replacing them.
This is kind of exciting I hope you are correct with your theory !

Les Cook is the bomb. he's a real good guy.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

My son went to BYU so I could ask him about the honor code. I don't really know about it myself, but it has been ridiculed on sports radio here in Detroit. Still the guy signed it and knew what he was getting into.
As far as Mr Cook, I'm sure he is a real nice and hard working guy who happened to choose a second rate cow college to go to. Kind of like MSU or Auburn. I guess everyone makes mistakes.;)
I don't expect him to go off half cocked though.

I do think that several smaller Michigan schools will drop hockey. We'll see what happens after that.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Why do you care that some private school decided to enforce it's honor code?

I'm sure the honor code at BYU is just like rules at other schools. The vast majority of the students will follow the rules and some will choose to break them. Then it's just a matter of how well you know your friends, how much they like you, and in some cases what your own IQ happens to be.
The saying I used a lot when I worked dorm security - If I catch you breaking the rules, you're going to get written up, end of the discussion. First off you broke the rules, but more importantly you were dumb enough to get caught. You want to underage drink? Fine that's your choice, but I recommend you don't do it with your door open in the FYE wing. Want to light up a doobie? Maybe standing outside the back door of Wads isn't a great place to try it.
I don't think any of us here are blind enough to think that just because this report of the honor code being broken at BYU which made ESPN was the first time this year, month, week or likely day that a student broke the honor code at BYU. Heck if you've ever been to Salt Lake City, they act like the drinking laws are real strict and you have to have a "membership" to get into a bar. That's true, but every place in town also has a guy who sits at the door and says "You can be my 'guest' just for today... come on in." if you don't have a membership for that establishment. Then there's the whole "drink with a sidecar" concept to keep the drinks watered down. No one drinks any less in SLC, it's just a show to make things seem better than they are.

But back to Tech - I'm not against a shake up in the hockey program. I don't like losing 30 games either, but I still think letting Jamie go would be a mistake. He needs to be retained with the program in some way shape or form because all things being equal you just can't make someone have a passion for what they do. Sure you could blow 2-million on a coach (if we had the money), but if they don't give a hoot about MTU and just want to use Tech as a stepping stone, are we really better off than we are now? We all focus on the W and L numbers, but I hope the folks making the decisions are considering more than that. For example, would we be happier if Tech ran a "dirty" program where 50% of the kids didn't graduate but we have a 0.500 or better record? So we get mentioned once in a while when the pity card is played and how tough it is for us. Would we rather be mentioned when the team and staff are under investigation for faking grades, poor recruiting practices, pay-outs, drugs, booster involvement and 100 other things that "big" programs get to deal with on a year basis?

I've said it before - be careful what you wish for... I don't think being a clean, but maybe less than successful, program is the worst thing in the world.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

The last thirty (30) years of Tech history is the real "insult" and as long as the Administration tolerates the Perpetual Losing Culture that is the MTU program, then I vote for "nothing." As my father drilled into me during my youth, "If you are going to do something, do it right, or don't do it at all."

I see no evidence that indicates the Administration believes the Hockey program is part of the MTU tradition, value proposition, component of school pride, etc. It is just another extracurricular activity that appears to be losing the following of the students. That wouldn't be so bad if the program had a low profile, but at the D1 (national) level and playing in big cities like MSP and Denver do we really want the word 'loser' associated with Michigan Tech? (rhetorical question) To borrow another tired cliche heard often during my youth, "Either crap or get off the pot."

Hmmm....someone may be reading (lurking?). ;)

I've been advocating a change to the org chart as a first step to addressing the structural problems with the hockey program. It's possible the Administration figures if the inaugural season of Women's Soccer can produce more wins than the Hockey team did this year, it's time to take the situation with Hockey seriously. Of course, it's all wishful thinking until the news release is written.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

I just hope that the athletic department, aside from the coaching staff, understands the implications of the potential conference shifting, and that if if plays out in certain ways, it could mean the death of programs. These next 5 years are very important and the athletic department and other decision makers at Tech have decisions to make that could either set the program up to be relevant in the college hockey world, or set it up to disappear completely.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Unless things change, we know it's obvious that the B10 wants their own conference.

That also leaves the WCHA with a nice round number of 10. But, if they want to bolster their conference to be the anti-B10, they'll woo Notre Dame and Miami.

Do they eliminate some weight to get back down to 10? I don't know. But if they don't, that leaves just six teams in the CCHA. BGSU, WMU, FSU, LSSU, NMU, UAf. If they do trim some weight, it would be nice to get tUMD (perennial power they are) and I guess MTU would have to come along (it would save some costs). (Side note: I really don't see tUMD getting the boot from an anti-B10, I could see them cutting Bemidji and MSU-M)

Now the WCHA does okay for themselves in this situation, but you are left with the GLIAC Hockey Conference in the CCHA. Some mid-majors (NMU, tUMD, FSU) but nothing that TV and the NCAA want to be a "flagship" for a Division 1 conference.

Ideally, the B10 forms their own conference, and Miami and ND stay to lead the CCHA. I don't see the CCHA taking in UAH, but maybe we could steal away Robert Morris. This way, working agreements could be formed with the B10 that some non-con games need to be played with your former leagues since there are regional rivals (Minn/Wisco WCHA, MSU/UM CCHA, tOSU/PSU CCHA/Bobby Mo).

Maybe the University of Kentucky will step up to NCAA D-1, just to make it a little easier to take UAH (plus UK) into a conference. ;)

*Edit* I'd also like to see the CCHA, Red Wings, Olympia Entertainment, and some of the CCHA schools work to take over the College Hockey at the Joe from Michigan/Michigan State. But without those two schools leaving, maybe the CCHA will decide to move to Van Andel in Grand Rapids. A smaller venue closer to more CCHA schools may just be what the league needs. And they could still run promotions with the Red Wings.

"Clean, but maybe less than successful," are not necessarily related. There are many examples in college athletics of "clean" programs that are successful. In fact, Michigan Tech's tradition was built on clean and successful. All it takes is an Administration with backbone to hire a head coach with integrity and a compliance officer who is a dutiful watchdog. In Michigan Tech's case (no overreaching boosters, small budget operation, etc.), "clean" is the easy and expected part.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

I'm not so sure that Nortre Dame and Miami would want to go from being headliners in the diluted CCHA to possible middle of the road teams in the WCHA.
Notre Dame was in the WCHA all four years I was at Tech. They were decent but not great and it was a friendly rivalry. I got a kick out of our little school beating them on a regular basis.

I remember coach Lefty Smith used to give a sharp whistle for the line changes which was followed by a chorus of whistling from the fans. Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame left with us for the CCHA but we were the only ones who returned to the WCHA. ND disbanded their Div I team and played at the club level for numerous years before rejoining the CCHA.

The WCHA experience at Tech hasn't been the same since those three left <sigh>. The WCHA should welcome ND with open arms...
