We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

I wonder if Gordic can't play, or because our position can't change he's taking the weekend to heal. Anyone know? Royer will be back tomorrow after serving his suspension.

Jamie's postgame notes:
UND is an impressive hockey team, #1 for a reason
The 2nd UND goal was a tough one, a freshmen Dman got beat by Frattin
The timeout before the 4x3, we were going with Furne/Johnstone, they were tired from being on the ice
Getting Royer back tomorrow
They're a great team at blocking shots, big strong D
We turned the puck over on line rushes, need to get it it past their Defensemen, it could create turnovers
We did a better job of cycling puck in the 3rd
Evan Witt in the 3rd period especially was strong, played well with Furne and Johnstone in that period

Hard game to watch, North Dakota made it look so easy. Genoe played pretty well or it could have been 10 - 1
I would say about 1500 fans ( in the seats ) at best.
If Coach Russell was trying to put doubt in their minds that performance did not help.
AD Suzanne's dad won the 50/50 to put the icing on the cake. Hopefully he will donate that back to the program to start the search for a new coaching ( recruiting ) staff.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Even when it was 1-1 halfway through the game, it felt like NoDak was skating circles around us. The floodgates opening was inevitable, and I don't think that reflects much on Genoe. It is increasingly clear that this team cannot stay with the high ranked teams in our conference when these teams are running at full power, which is disappointing, but not unexpected. Even in the early Russell years we would be able to grind out a game or two along the way, outwork other teams, and get after it. Last night, in my uneducated opinion, the team felt very passive.

Houghton77 said 1,500 in the place at best. I was thinking more like 1,200 at the most, including the late arriving crowd. So many empty seats. A lot of green in the fans that were there. At least we gave away 500 tickets to the young people for today's game? I think it says something that you have to choose the last game of the year to be the Econo Foods Kids Day. It is a good marketing thing, don't get me wrong, and it is something that I encourage, but to need a special promotion on Senior Night? This program has fallen enough that there is not a demand for tickets, even for the last game of the year. There is no buzz around campus for the athletics, including hockey. I am not saying that everybody should delay leaving for Spring Break to support the Huskies on the ice and hardwood (get out while you can!!!), but it should at least be "worth it" enough that people would consider hanging around an extra day or two.

I looked at the box score. Announced attendance: 2,115. I think that it must be a typo, and they switched the 2 and 1. Or they lied. To be entirely fair, NMU had a playoff game against BGSU last night with an attendance of 1,238.

Looking ahead to the doom and gloom of radical realignment and the BTHC, why would schools like NoDak and Duluth and Miami and Notre Dame who are left out of the conference want to play in the same league as NMU and MTU and LSSU. I don't think the Armageddon is that the Big10ish schools are leaving, it is that you will likely see a concentration of power in another western conference to match it. And really, does Tech deserve to be in that discussion given the last 30 years and how the program is run? Or, will we end up in a less desirable situation based on how things have progressed in Houghton?

I fear that we will be left in the "D-2" league that still hangs on to the title of Division I hockey. Sure, there is still an auto-bid to the NCAAs on the line, but it becomes harder to schedule home non-conference games and harder to recruit. Will you get people to pay the $14 a ticket to see Ferris and Lake State where North Dakota and Minnesota and Wisconsin used to be? Will we be relegated to the status of something like the Patriot League and Summit League is in D-1 basketball? (I had to look up that these conferences actually existed)

I don't like feeling this negative about Michigan Tech and the future of college hockey in the Copper Country, but this is where this season has led. Last night was painful to watch.

I am not quite on the Fire Russell bandwagon yet. I am trusting Suzanne to make the right decision in the end, and only she will know what is said in the season ending evaluation and interview process.

But, things are pretty ****ing bleak in Houghton as far as the Michigan Tech Husky Hockey Team is concerned.

I was thinking about this the other day. We would lose, but the game would be low scoring and competative. Heck we might even find a way to grind out a win. We haven't seen that for awhile.

With the talk of the BTHC, I agree, it's not a rosey picture.

When the B10 comes, the smaller MN schools will be fine. It's the small MI schools (including Tech) that are boned, along with probably both AK teams.

After a weekend like this, the AD has to be doing everything in her power to get the donation(s) needed to buy the staff out. Even if she ultimately can't get the money to pull the trigger, she has to try.

I don't care that UND is the best team in the conference (and arguably the country), and say what you will about our depth. You can't deny that this was an utterly disgraceful performance.

FYI, no UM series at Tech next year. Therefore, no GPL tailgate next year.

brutal end to a brutal season.

one thing this really proves - DU sucks!

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Well if our goal was to look like a horrible hockey team before we play them again next weekend, mission accomplished!

A pretty down Jamie today after the game.

Jamies postgame thoughts:
We were a fragile team mentally, and they score on their first shift on tip shot
But us back on our heals, another UND goal and then not goood composure after that
Down to 10 forwards, a ton of specialty teams tonight after a lot of 5x5 last night
The guys worked hard and competed, early in the game we didnt' take care in front of our net
It's possible to get a few guys back next week, Jamie has no way of knowing, but it would give us a life physically and emotionally

Genoe should actually get the start. $10 to myself says Tech wins one game next weekend.

Well since we can't talk about a Tech win this weekend let's talk BTHC. I don't think it really will be that bad for Tech. I see two real possibilities: 1) The history of Tech is something that the WCHA wants to hang on to as one of it's cornerstone teams. Maybe not the most successful, but the history is strong. If Tech stays in the WCHA we can play the same card as we do today - maybe not really successful but that is because we play such a tough schedule week in week out.... Or 2) Tech ends up the new JrWCHA with the likes of NMU, LSSU, UAA, UAF, etc. Honestly I don't think the common fan cares what league Tech plays in and an inferrior league that allows Tech to go 0.500 on a regular basis might be just what Tech needs at this point. Maybe every 5-6 years we can be one of the top teams in said league and play our way into an auto-bid. I don't see any chance of that happening in the WCHA so in my mind a reshuffle of the teams isn't going to hurt Tech that badly unless a fan is really attached to the WCHA.

I agree that Tech needs to be in a conference where they can compete and perhaps even finish first occasionally. Those fans who lose interest because Tech is no longer playing Wisconsin or Minnesota will be replaced by ones who get excited about seeing a winning team. If Tech does find itself in, to borrow a basketball term, a 'mid-major' conference then they should look into getting a consultant with a minor league pro sports marketing background to learn how to promote the team. Actually, a new conference presents the time for the program to reinvent itself. Who knows, something good may come out of the carnage if there is a sense of determination from the administration to support the program financially and instill an expectation of winning.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Tech should probably move to another league, yeah the history of the WCHA is great and all, but they've switched leagues before, and perhaps being more competitive in a lower league would help boost win and attendance totals to make up for the loss of revenue sharing.

Something has to give.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

ok.. I agree it was totally disgraceful. I disagree that the small minnesota schools will be fine if the big guys form their own conference. They have almost Zero marketing power. I also disagree that Tech should compete in some mid major league. That is too much like giving up to me. I think we put the money/effort out to be competitive nationally or we go to div 3. I'm not ok with just being in a league with mankato and bimidji. That's just a continuation of the decline IMO. I think we have to find a way to reverse the decline and I don't see that happening unless we stay in a top conference. I don't see Lssu or Ferris or NMU, in D1 down the road.I don't think they have the financial commitment to stay. In other words, either we are committed or not.

Re: We Cannot Have Nice Things: Michigan Tech 2010-2011 Season Thread: Part Tre

Alright, let's clear this up for everyone. D3. Is. Not. An. Option.

The reason for this, is that Tech hockey could play a D3 schedule, but because the athletic department is designated D2, the team wouldn't be allowed to win any D3 titles. I believe MN-Crookston had that dilemma a couple years ago, and that is why they don't have a program anymore, even after a brand new arena was commissioned for them and the city.

Not to mention, it is an insult to even suggest that a program with Tech's history should drop to a lower division. No. It is D1 or nothing, people.

Those fans who lose interest because Tech is no longer playing Wisconsin or Minnesota will be replaced by ones who get excited about seeing a winning team.

I think you underestimate the draw power of the 'name' teams. I remember a few years ago, CC came into town ranked #1 in the country. Attendance was probably a little over 2,000 both nights, as Tech took three points and made the WCHA Player/Rookie of the Year look like a fool in net during the Saturday game.

Case in point - even when a small school like CC is highly ranked, only the season ticket holders and a handful of students are interested enough to show up. Now, I am willing to admit that part of this may be attributable to Ian's "marketing" plan, however I would say, with 95% confidence, that the only small school on Tech's schedule that consistently draws more than about 2,200 in paid attendance is "rival" NMU.
