WCHA Playoffs

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Game scores (with links to full box scores) -- All games final:

(1) Minnesota-Duluth 6, (8) North Dakota 2

Emanuelle Blais scored four goals tonight. Saara Tuominen got one herself 24 hours after winning a bronze medal, so good for her. That's why she's a team captain right there.

And if I read the box scores correctly, Hokey Langan didn't get any points in tonight's Ohio State game. I think that puts Blais ahead of her overall for the season for goals and points, but I could be wrong about that.

The scoring title is for WCHA conference games -- playoffs aren't included. So Langan wrapped it up last weekend.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Yup, and congrats to her. She's a heck of a player. I was just kind of extending the season for fun. I was a bit surprised that she was held pointless.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Didn't she travel from Van. to Minn?

and isn't that about half way across the continent? Vancouver on the pacific ocean side of North America to Minnesota in the middle of the continent, would mean half way

Fair enough....players have regularly done far worse travel for Four Nations Cups every other year (when it's in Finland or Sweden). I remember 2003, Ruggiero and Chu won the 4 Nations Cup for the US in Sweden on a Sunday and then had a road game against Providence not long after getting back on Tuesday.

It's true that past Finns and Swedes who've come back from the Olympics didn't have to jump into the playoffs like this, since everything starts a couple weeks earlier now.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

It's too bad she and others lose the experience of the "Closing Ceremonies" which would in effect put proper/formal mental/emotional closure on the Games as the Event for them.

At the same time they're getting paid (scholarships) to play, so the business side of it is also understandable. I just think it's unfortunate.
I agree that this situation poses a dilemma, and I think it goes beyond closure at the Olympics versus the "business" of D-I athletics. The players are heavily invested in their college teams and teammates. As much as they'd like to soak up every minute of the Olympic experience, they also care about what happens to their D-I teams. They miss their teammates.

A complication in the case of Räty specifically is that her father also flew to the Twin Cities from the Games. So this weekend presents a chance for him to watch her play with the Gophers. Still, she agreed that yesterday felt like the longest day of her life.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Also, I'd add, it's not unusual for Olympic athletes to have to miss either the Opening or Closing ceremonies. In case of the opening ceremonies, some athletes still need to practice/compete etc. In the case of closing, sometimes it's just too far after some who compete early in the two weeks I think.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Regarding change of venues for playoffs and attendance issues; appears that everyone was able to get into smaller arenas. Attendance for UMD / ND was 307 at Heritage. OSU / WI 601 at Eagles Nest. Also, 924 at Ridder for MSU / MN. 411 At NHC for SCSU / BSU. Smaller rinks are perfect for women's hockey at this point in time. Ridder is held out as the premier women's rink in the nation; however that has never been sold out for a women's game.

I wonder if it will sellout for the FF games? Might be the best chance since it opened. With a capacity of around 3400...is this the "smallest" venue for a FF to date?

I've got my tickets.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Good question. There is really no "buzz" in the local media about the FF. This area is much more concerned about: 1.Joe Mauer's contract situation, 2. Is Bret Farvre coming back, 3. Target Field, 4. How bad the Gopher Men's team is, 5. One time local, Lindsy Vonn, 6. Olympic hockey, 7. Wild hockey

MN and WI have the biggest followings in midwest area. UMD is really not on anyone's radar in the twin cities; and judging by the attendance at Heritage, not much interest in Duluth either.

Don't know which eastern teams have followers.

They had the State HS tourney at Ridder several years ago and that event did not sell out.

Hopefully there will be a good turnout.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Going to OT in Minneapolis with the Mavs and the Gophs tied at 3-3.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

The longest game in both Maverick and Gopher history is heading to its 3rd OT.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Yeah, good thing Hockey East just has byes for the top seeds and no 2 vs. 7 best-of-three quarterfinal. What a bore and formality these playoff series are! :P

I think Minnesota had more jump during that OT than they had at times in regulation. The MSU seniors don't want their careers to end (although one -- Hewitt -- has been knocked out of the game with a knee injury.)
