WCHA Playoffs

Re: WCHA Playoffs

I saw a bunch of UMD men's fans who came down for today's WCHA Championship game.. who weren't there Saturday.. .. but Frozen Four weekend is also the Red Baron Final Five for the men.. so the crowd may be lacking for sure if both teams from UMD and/or Minnesota are playing that Friday

The girls' state b-ball tourney is that weekend, as well. Not a big crowd draw, but just as an FYI to those coming for the Frozen Four...a lot of schools involved. The games are at teh Target Center and at Williams arena on the U of M campus. hotels in the downtown/campus area will be full, and there will be traffic and parking issues.

Also, as an FYI to those coming in for the quarterfinals in the Cities this coming weekend...it's the boys' state hockey tourney. That always sells out. Again, hotels in the downtown area will fill quickly. The tournament games will be held at the Xcel, which is downtown, and at Mariucci, which is also on the U of M campus. Again, lots of traffic and parking issues. On the other hand, if you're coming from out of town, the boys' state hockey tourney is a great show. If there are tickets available, it's worth it to try to take in a game.

A note to those not familiar with the Twin Cities and the state hockey tourney, the Xcel is in downtown St. Paul, while the U of M campus is in Minneapolis. The championship bracket games take place at Xcel (and are televised locally); those at Mariucci are consolation or 3rd place games.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Please tell me that there was more than 824 in attendence that was listed in the collegehockeystats.net box score. I realize that the Minnesota men's team was playing (and crushing) Wisconsin next door, but that was still a league tournament title game. How can that game not draw at least 1,000 fans?

Hey, you have to know who your audience is...
Most college games in the Twin Cities are heavily attended by younger girls and parents--they probably make up more than half of the total attendance at most Gopher games, don't they? This weekend was Regions for Minnesota hockey. There are 3 Regionals per level (U12A, U12B, U14A), 8 teams per Region. That's 24 teams of 15-16 players and 30+ parents per level, 72 teams overall. I won't do the Math but that's where everybody was. Are you telling me the University of Minnesota/WCHA/NCAA are so far removed from youth hockey they didn't know this? I would have loved to see the Beavers on Saturday. But there's a team WAYYYY more important to me that played 2 games on Saturday and then 2 on Sunday. Thousands of other potential college fans were doing the the same.

I don't have numbers on demographics, but I think it is safe to say that when there is a nice crowd in Ridder, the sector above is a huge reason why. I hope some effort is underway to entice these people to the NCAA tournament. However, it wouldn't come as a shock if this is not the case.:(

Re: WCHA Playoffs

I have to agree that Spooner is defenitely one that you cant miss on the ice, and you sigh a sigh of relief when she is off the ice!:D

During the Gopher/Buckeye semi it seemed like she never left the ice...to this Gopher fan anyway. She wasn't off for long between shifts.

Yeah, I missed that one. To clarify, the hockey tourney location is in downtown St. Paul, not downtown Mpls. Either way, though, getting to the campus will be interesting, to say the least. And there will be lots of hotels filled with high school kids, and hopefully, some of their parents.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Spooner is on the top line for OSU (they really only roll 3 lines too), plays PK & PP so that's prolly why it seemed like she was out there so much. lol. The kid is a great player, and a really nice person.

And I don't recommend driving from Columbus to Minneapolis and back in two days to anyone lol. It was worth the trip because the one game I watched was absolutely amazing, but I don't think I'll be driving a car for a few days. haha.

I've done the non-stop drive before and I'll do it again.:) But you're right, the fun is completely gone with about three hours to go -- each way.

On the other hand, Amp is available in a larger size they call the Big Rig. Drink one of those, and the last three hours is a breeze. But then again, you won't be doing much of anything the next day.;)

Bottom Line: Air travel is recommended if you're in a hurry. If you have the time, make it a four day weekend and do fun things along the way.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

Another player for OSU who logs a ton of icetime is Kelly Wild; didn't play v MN. Injured in WI series.

Re: WCHA Playoffs

I'm finally going through the pictures I got from Minnesota/OSU and could probably do a page of 20+ Spooner pictures if I really wanted to!

I think I had about 4 of those Mega Monster energy drinks lol. And the part of the drive from Indianapolis to Chicago and Madison, WI to Minneapolis made me want to kill myself lol.
