WCHA First Round - Minnesota Hosts UAA (Let's call it the vengeance series)

Re: WCHA First Round - Minnesota Hosts UAA (Let's call it the vengeance series)

This time of year a win is a win, one step closer to St.Paul.

Game wasn't as close as the score, we need to stay out of the box and we'll be fine.

Re: WCHA First Round - Minnesota Hosts UAA (Let's call it the vengeance series)

I'd hope that game gives the Seawolves something to build on for tomorrow night. There wasn't much penetration by the Gopher offense all night so they should gain some confidence there. They were good at making the most of their chances I thought. Obviously, there weren't many chances. The 2nd period was brutal for UAA.

On the reviewed goal; I didn't really question the play live but when they showed the overhead replay it seemed pretty clear to me that two Gopher players made some contact with Kamal and the 2nd bump was interference in my book. I was surprised when they called it a goal.

Both teams hit pipes. The Gophs certainly could have won the game by a larger margin but it easily could have ended in regulation as a tie as well. Tomorrow night could be tense.

Anthony LaPanta with Kevin Gorg is the all-time worst announcing team. I feel bad for Gopher fans that had to listen to them all year.

I feel our pain on that one. :(

Not trying to sound smug here, but UAA may not have the horses but they sure as hell play a solid team game and are coached well enough to make their opponent earn the friggin win. I could see tomorrow night going two ways - UAA feeling confident like you said and making it interesting, or the Gophers feeling like they got the monkey off their back and riding their usual Sat night play to a smackdown.

Good analysis, I have no dog in this race but from what I saw I agree..

The 2nd Goph goal shouldn't have been, then the officials spent the better part of the 2nd period trying to make up for it. (I hate that). Get the call right the first time!

Should be a fun game tomorrow night. Both teams will come out hard.

That's how I saw it at the rink as well, although I wouldn't limit it to just the 2nd period.

Closer than I had expected (hoped?). If MN can keep the penalties less lopsided it will go a long way in making the game a little less stressful.

Re: WCHA First Round - Minnesota Hosts UAA (Let's call it the vengeance series)

Yeah I love how the refs decided to swallow the whistle no matter how blatant the clutching and grabbing by UAA was. Oh well we still won, tomorrow we will beat them down and punch our ticket to the Final Five.

Ditto. My opinion was that whatever they had called on the ice, they would stick with it. That odd of a situation.

I just hope that Haula's wrist doesn't swell up to the size of a basketball. My parents were at the game and they said he was given drugs right on the bench. Obviously he got a lot of tape on that thing too. We need him, he has really turned it on lately.

Yeah I can't really b* about the 2nd when UAA had 7 power plays and then was allowed to basically mug players.

It's a disappointing loss but it's been a disappointing season so no surprise.

Glad (?) to see that some UAA fans can admit that. ;)

The reffing was horrible all around last night. So inconsistent.

Thank you for the sympathy. Fortunately we have the option to turn down the volume and listen to Wally and Frank on the radio (although last night they got bumped to a station that few can get due to playing the Gopher hoops team crapping the bed on the usual station).

Re: WCHA First Round - Minnesota Hosts UAA (Let's call it the vengeance series)

Yeah it was just bad all around. Both Lucia and Shyiak were about to explode it seemed.

If I drank every time I heard/saw Shyiak yell "that's f*in' bullsh*!" last night, I'd have a helluva hangover today, let's put it that way. :D

Re: WCHA First Round - Minnesota Hosts UAA (Let's call it the vengeance series)

How often do you see a team get twice as many shots and get more then three times the amount of penalties.

Re: WCHA First Round - Minnesota Hosts UAA (Let's call it the vengeance series)

I guess I have to claim ignorance here. There must be something in the rule book I don't know about because I really can't explain how in the world they allowed the Gophers 2nd goal. I swear I've seen less contact with more assistance from the opponent in regards to checking the offensive player into the goaltender that resulted in goals being waived off. In this case, 2 Gopher players were involved in running into Kamal with no assistance from any Seawolf defenders. At least nothing I saw. Like I said, I have to believe I don't know something here because, in my opinion, that goal shouldn't have counted in a million years. During Shyiak's conversation with the officials you could read his lips and you could see him ask them if they could please go look at the replay again. Although the officials decision helped my team, the WCHA should be embarrassed for this call and what followed. As has already been pointed out, the penalty calls were extremely lopsided the rest of the period for sure and even the rest of the game in the Seawolves favor. I'm happy the Gophers were able to maintain composure and ultimately win the game in spite of their now usual Friday night clunker. Anyway, I really hope to see better quality officiating tonight and next week in St. Paul. Last night was simply horrible.

I did not see it, but what did the overhead camera show? Nothing else matters, right? the refs were Butch Mousseaux, Pete Friesema.

In my opinion, it shows 2 Gopher players taking out Kamal. I do not think the goal should have stood.

Re: WCHA First Round - Minnesota Hosts UAA (Let's call it the vengeance series)

The only thing I can think of is they didn't feel the contact interfered with the goalie's ability to play the puck.

Re: WCHA First Round - Minnesota Hosts UAA (Let's call it the vengeance series)

the WCHA needs to have Minny at the X... who cares if they have to screw over AA to achieve that?

I guess I can see that to some degree. However, penalties are called all the time when contact with the goaltender occurs during non-scoring chance plays. Take Budish's penalty for hitting the goalie in the first period. Him hitting the goalie didn't interfere with Kamal being able to play the puck but he still got the penalty because he did make contact. I don't know, I'm glad the call went our way but I thought it was pretty ugly.
