WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

Yes it does? Atmosphere is the overall ambiance of the arena. It's a culmination of fans, players, and facilities. If you've got a crappy arena, and I'm not saying tech's is, with things like bad sightlines, uncomfortable seats, etc. it affects the mood of the fans, and therefore hurts the atmosphere.

Tech has good sightlines. The goodfy thing about Tech is you walk into this building that looks like a high school. you see lockers like a high school and then have this little ticket window like a high school. You walk down a hall and go through some doors and boom there is a ice rink. If you keep walking down the hall I think the basketball gym is farther down.

The place has wooden seats and is every bit as bland and concrete as the NHC. When I was there the NHC was a little nicer, but like I said I haven't seen the remodel so it could have changed the place A lot. Of course the NHC has had improvements over the last 8 years as well.

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

Atmosphere has nothing to do with whether or not a place is a dump. The new can get pretty quiet at times, yet most would agree it's one of the finest arenas in the country.

Sure it does. The old ralph was not the nicest arena, but it was a great place to watch a game. Old Marriucci had bad blind spots at center ice, but when it was rocking it was great to watch a game. bland boring crowds take away from the enjoyment of a game for people who actually enjoy the whole experience of a college game. Hence why TCF stadium has bench seats, but still looks like a great place to watch a game. If it was all about posh nice seats they would have put seats back every place and made the place smaller.

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

By the way, Colorado College was fourth in the nation in attendance (tickets sold) last season. I don't want to even guess where Mich Tech was on that list.
Would mind explaining how it is a fair comparison between CC and MTU?
CC enrollment: 1,950
Colorado Springs Population: 360,890
1.8% of the CS population attends each game on average (2008-2009)

MTU enrollment: 5,943
Houghton/Hancock Population: 11,457
Houghton County Population: 36,016
Entire UP Population: 308,319
21.5% of the H/H, 6.8% of HC, 0.8% of the Entire UP population attends each game on average (2008-2009)

I wasn't saying that Tech had bad sightlines, I was just using that was an example of what would make an arena less enjoyable. I've been to the NHC, and I personally liked it. Crappy seats, and not overwhelmingly nice, but neither is tMooch. It's mostly about the fans, and how rowdy you can get the place. That makes for fun hockey.

However it works out, I'm game for a little alcoholic wager.

So.... your choice of what you want to bet, six pack, case of beer, or if you wanna wait until you're of age we could do a set number of bar drinks, and the terms are I win if SCSU finishes with more conference points, you win if UMD has more conference points, and **** tiebreakers, if they finished tied in points, we both walk away and hang our heads in shame. :D

Off topic, but you going to St. Cloud for the Duluth series at all? I'm thinking of going up for Saturday's game this year.

Yes I will be attending the St. Cloud series. I think I'm staying in the dorms with one of my friends. Should be a grand ole time.

Tech's been putting a lot of money into the place. The entrance is still pretty dated and they need to rip it out and redo it, but the arena itself has gotten a lot of facelifts recently - new plastic and upholstered seats, repainting, the Hockey Educational Center, the skyboxes at the home end. The NHC isn't bad in its own right, but has poorer upper seating sightlines, much less comfortable seats, and an entrance that's not all that much less confusing than Tech's. Frankly, MacInnes looks more appealing on the inside because they bother to paint the concrete. :p

(the banners help too, even if we do have to blow off the dust to see them. :o)

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

 Why don't you break down both arena and fill me in sporto. I haven't seen the improvements to Macinnes, but I have been there twice and the place was not nice and the atmosphere sucks when the place is half emtpy 90% of the games.

Well, I have been to the NHC twice: once when MN was up there a few years back (and where I was convinced that it was probably the loudest arena I had ever been in for college hockey and I'm sure the design of the arena helped that) and once last year when MTU visited. The seats themselves were terrible, it felt like you were in a bomb shelter, and there was no "pizazz" for lack of a better word. It was bland, to put it frankly. Yes, atmosphere does help the overall experience, but I don't use atmosphere to judge the arena itself.

As for the MacInnes, I have been there for 3 games (one vs NMU, and two vs MN) and it actually felt like an arena. They actually have seats you can be comfortable in (if one sat down ;). It felt more "open" and less constricting than the NHC. After seeing the pics of the renovations, I am kind of excited to see the changes in person, and how it affects everything.

Finally, when the NHC gets their changes, I will probably head up there for some random game and check it out, and as I mentioned before, I will review my stance on the arena.

But as it stands now, MacInnes > NHC by quite a bit.

It is better to have dusty banners then none at all. Right?

yeah yeah, CC CU DU whatever! blame alzheimers. or wine. I've been to many games at CC and the arena always seems half full to me. but I know what you're going to say ... because they were playing Tech. Plan to test that theory out in a few weeks.

For you.......it will be half empty.:D

It was pretty sad that it was half empty when I saw it....since it was the WCHA playoffs. Or perhaps the more realistic CC fans realized that CC wasn't that good and would get beaten by Tech. By the way, Colorado Springs was easily the most boring town to drink in/night life in the entire conference.

I don't like the NHC, to me it never had any character, it is just a box of concrete that was nothing special. IMO the ralph and mariucci are the best and won't be touched anytime soon. I really don't think people realize how much of an improvement has been done in MacInnes in the last 2 years.

The Springs is fun, if you know where to go. :p Of course, I dunno how close to the arena those places that are fun are, since I was never there during CC's season.

The highlight of our trip, other than kicking CC's ***, is taking pictures of tDarkness spooning the ****ter after slamming a fifth of vanilla rum.

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

I'll admit that I haven't been to MacInnes in several years (early to mid '90's when I saw a couple MTU/NMU games), but it definatly has more character than the NHC. Now, I was just looking at the 2010-'11 BSU schedule again, and I see the Beavers will be at Tech in early February (2/11-12/11)... Could they get lucky enough to be the Winter Carnival opponent in year 1 of the 12-team WCHA? Either way, I think that may warrant a return trip to Houghton...

Does anyone know the clusters for next year other than the grouping of SCSU, UND, Omaha, and Bemidji?
In the past, Minnesota, Mankato, and St. Cloud played home and home series when they only played each other 2 games a year. Will this continue with the new schedule, or will it only be played at one site?

Too bad you will have to get rid of all yours, since they have that racist mascot on them, and it is going to be banned.

How many times do we have to tell you? It's a racist logo you stupid dickweasel.
