WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

The lobby doesn't make the arena...
6000 seats/ 60000 Population = 10% of the Community
2500 seats filled as you say/ 7000 Population = 36% of the Community

Mind you Tech's arena has never been State Funded. It was built with STUDENT Support and updated with Alumni donations. We don't exist in a state that throws money around on those kinds of projects.

Hell you don't live in a state that throws money at funding projects that prevent people from killing each other.

Yeah shame on those idiots for building arenas over 10,000 people that fill to capacity against any team that comes calling. :p

And while we're at let's not even mention the Kohl Center even though it's bigger than REA and Marriucci.:D

Well first off nobody called them idiots, it was just implied:rolleyes: But it's easy to fill an arena when you got upwards of 60,000 people going to your school, or your school is the closest thing to a professional program your state has. Not taking anything away from the programs. P.S. I didn't say the Kohl Center because that would involve me caring about that state. :D

hahaha right? yeah leading the nation in attendance every year really sucks.. drawing more people on ave. then 6-8 NHL teams, I don't know why programs like Minn, UND and Wisc. don't downsize there arena's, it would make for a better and louder venue :P

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

And god I hope you are right about us getting the more elite northern players coming here. I'm sick of watching our kids goin' to the Sue. :D

What do you guys consider "Duluth background" when it comes to recruiting? Obviously the Mountain Range, and I'd think up north to Canada. Do you guys figure Moorhead to be in your top recruiting market? I'm not originally from Minnesota, so I don't know what everyone considers "Northern MN" but this year SCSU's got 3 kids from Moorhead, Marvin's from Warroad, Raboin's from Detroit Lakes and LeBlanc's from Duluth. Hardy may be from Hermantown, but he's a 3rd string goalie who may never see the ice, and obviously we didn't outrecruit you guys for Mitch Ryan. :D

UNO has a terrific arena and the Kohl Center is far from a dump, Minny has a pretty unique building as well, SCSU will probably now have a better arena then Mankato, Tech, UAA, BSU and UMD but to put it above Minny, Wisc, UNO is stretching it to say the least, never the less it will be a nice arena for there 6,000 fans!!!

You know I hate to come to tb's defense, but he didn't say SCSU's new building will be better than everyone else but UND's, he said that you could make the argument they're on par with all of them. Everyone has their own opinion of what they're looking for in an ice rink, but right now you could not be taken seriously if you said the NHC was as good as the building that MN, UW and UNO have. However, after the renovations I'll bet some fans from teams other than SCSU will say they like it better than Mariucci or the Kohl Center. And some will say they prefer Mariucci. And from what I hear, I think some might vault the DECC into the top couple rinks.

Then again, its not built, so we'll see how it turns out, but if its anything like the depictions, then its a helluva lot more than I was expecting when I heard the NHC was getting a touchup. For those who haven't seen it, here's a YouTube link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pP6SEHXpeqM

Not even from MN, and just jumps in and starts spitting out the Gopher arrogance. You'll fit in, sir!

The knock on Mariucci isn't structurally. The building is really nice, though not exceptional (I waited too long to go, and when I first saw it was kinda disappointed) and there's not a bad seat in the house. Problem isn't really MN's fault either... they're very popular, they get a lot of fans in there, and the average age is quite a bit older than the average crowd at SCSU, MTU, MSU-M etc. where a large percentage of the fans are students or former students, and not just people showing up to hockey games cause its something to do. The end result is more of an NHL crowd (actually, I'd say the crowds are more lively at Wild games than Gopher games), which there's nothing wrong with, but when you're expecting and wanting loud and rowdy crowds like you'll find in other WCHA arenas, its a bit of a letdown.

Well, the difference is that the Kohl Center is one of those college programs that has a great, loud, rowdy crowd. And they find a way to do it despite having a bigger crowd than the Ralph or Mooch bring in. Though, I have a feeling its because the average blood alcohol level is twice what it is in either of those two. :D

this is very true...

I don't like the NHC because some of the seats don't have backs on them. I mean, really, I don't need leather, rosewood armrests and iced beer but a plastic bench just doesn't cut it.

Best part is that while a ton of seats don't have backs, the Dogg Pound seats do... and they stand the whole game. :D Not sure, but I think they're throwing backs on all seats, but that won't be for two more years.

You're right on. I grew up a huge Gopher fan, as basically everybody in Minnesota does. I had never gotten to go to a came, however, because I lived with just my mom and she was definitely not a hockey fan. Last year was my first time attending an actual Gopher game at Mariucci. (I've gotten to go a few times when Albert Lea has made it to the state tourney, but the crowds are not that impressive to say the least) When I walked in I was really impressed by the amount of people at the game, but once it started I realized that most of the fans are older. Sure, you've got a good size student section, but there's also a lot of those 60 something year old guys wearing there Gopher sweaters and are only there to leisurely watch a game. Also, the student section is split up. It's just a different atmosphere than places like Duluth, St. Cloud, and Mankato, where it's typically at least 50% students. My PERSONAL preference is having a large student section that cheers loudly, but again that is just my personal preference.

Can't be a Gopher fan without arrogance! :D And I'm a born and raised Minnesotan for 22 years, I just happen to go to school in Kentucky currently. And I'm an Indiana Hoosier fan for other reasons.

Luckily for me, I grew up in Europe, so even though I would cheer for the Gophers in spirit being from Minnesota, I was at best a casual fan since I couldn't see any games. I've still got the U of MN sweatshirt I received my junior year in high school in my closet, and I'm waiting for a real special game between our teams to sacrifice that baby. :D

Dogs, you were talking earlier about feeling that SCSU's hype isn't founded and than Duluth's been slighted. Care to make a friendly wager on where they finish this year in the WCHA standings?

I've already made some friendly wagers with my friends who go to st. cloud. What do you have in mind?

I went to SCSU, you I assume either went to or still go to UMD... I'm guessing alcohol might not be the worst idea. :D

I tried to get NSSHG to agree to not posting about SCSU for a year, and I wouldn't mention tUMD for a year, but I never heard back from him. But I don't wanna do that with dogs.... why scare off one of the few tUMD fans worth listening to? :D

Well alcohol could be arranged, but seens as I'm not 21 and do not live in St. Cloud I do not see how that would work. I say how bout the loser has to have something (we can discuss this part) about the other team on their banner, and only that something about that other team, for a period of time (again, discuss). Also, 4four4, that was just harsh. But thank you for the compliment Euro

I don't live in St. Cloud either, its not a place you wanna stick around when you're done with school. And I'd rather buy you a keg than compliment tUMD. :D We can either wait on the collection, or I can perhaps sneak you a beer at the F5.

Wait... nevermind... your age won't matter. When SCSU trounces your Dogs, you can just give me the money, I can buy the beer for myself. :D
