WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

Having been to both MacInnes and the NHC, the Mac was much better even before improvements this year (which I will also see in Dec). The NHC is louder, but that a $3 gets you a crappy coffee at Starbucks.

Now, if and when the NHC gets renovations, I will re-judge. As it stands now, I agree that the remote town and academics is what hurts Tech.

Wouldn't disagree with any of that. From what I've heard MacInnes is better than the NHC. But I think after the rennovations to both are said and done, the NHC (or Coborne's Rink :D ) will at least catch up with, if not more likely pass MTU's, so what was an edge that MTU had over SCSU (and UMD) in the past I don't think will be there anymore.

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

Have not been aware of the renovations going on in the MacInnes? They have been working seriously to improve facilities. I'm quite certain that much of the backend facilities are nicer than many of the other WCHA teams. Just this year they've added 10 suites and 2 skyboxes to the west end of the arena. In the near future there are plans to acquire a video screen that will be higher resolution and larger than both UND's and the UW's.

Obviously, dg doesn't read the arena thread Moose posted sometime ago.

Yeah, but SCSU and UMD are getting makeovers, and I could be wrong but I think they're getting more extensive ones than Tech.

UMD is getting a brand new arena and SCSU and MTU are getting facelifts.

Tired of having them beat you? :) :D :p

Last year we swept em! :)

...and of course!

I wonder how many UND fans will be at the opening game at the new BSU arena...my guess is a LOT :)

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

This is going to beg a new WCHA arena ranking in 2012 (after SCSU's renovations). I'm pretty amazed at how far ahead of every other conference the "W" is already, but add in new rinks at BSU and UMD, the Qwest and renovations at MTU and SCSU...

At that point, the oldest building in the league will be MacInnes (1972) but with major renovations in the last 5 years, followed by Sully (1983), then NHC (1989) with renovations scheduled to start next spring, Mariucci (1993), Verizon Wireles Center (1995), Kohl Center (1998), World Arena (1998), Magness Arena (1999), Engelstad Arena (2001), Qwest Center (2003), BREC (2010) and new DECC (2010). That's 8 of the 12 schools with new facilities built in the last 12 years.

It's pretty unbelievable...

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

UMD's not getting a makeover, they're getting a whole new $80 million rink...

Yeah, and from what I hear and see from pictures it looks like it's going to be pretty nice. Technically it's only 57 million dollars. I believe the other 23 or whatever is for a new parking lot and an added parking ramp, as it was build where the current parking lot is.

And god I hope you are right about us getting the more elite northern players coming here. I'm sick of watching our kids goin' to the Sue. :D

Re: WCHA 2010-'11 through '14-'15 "rival pairs" announced

MTUs barn an issue?? huh?? our locker room and training facilities are among the best. and the arena itself is way better than SCSU, UMDs and certainly on par with Mankato. in many ways it is better than the half filled huge arena CU plays in and the terrible design of DUs arena (non existent site lines). and lets not even go there with UAA.

I have no idea about locker room's and training facilities, but Tech's arena sucks compared the NHC even without the renovations that start next year. Once the renovations are done the NHC will be everybit as nice as any rink not named the Ralph in college hockey. Then on top of all that SCSU plays in front of 6,000 a night and Tech is lucky to have 2,500.

SCSU could build a Ralph clone and you still would find some way to rag on it.:D

The new Duluth rink looks great and I am sure it will help with recruiting. From what Motzko said the 28 million NHC renovations will make the NHC every bit as nice as any rink in the WCHA outside of UND. SCSU and UMD will not have any excuses any more.

The lobby doesn't make the arena...
6000 seats/ 60000 Population = 10% of the Community
2500 seats filled as you say/ 7000 Population = 36% of the Community

Mind you Tech's arena has never been State Funded. It was built with STUDENT Support and updated with Alumni donations. We don't exist in a state that throws money around on those kinds of projects.

Ohh considering maybe 2500 people live in Houghton I don't think thats too bad. The statement that the NHC will be as nice as any other rink in the WCHA other then the Ralph is a little bit of a stretch. Maybe the best in minnesota, Maybe. UNO has a terrific arena and the Kohl Center is far from a dump, Minny has a pretty unique building as well, SCSU will probably now have a better arena then Mankato, Tech, UAA, BSU and UMD but to put it above Minny, Wisc, UNO is stretching it to say the least, never the less it will be a nice arena for there 6,000 fans!!!

Some may say we never really had excuses in the first place, being in Minnesota and all :D

But yeah I've been to the NHC before and I never thought it was a crappy facility. Especially when it gets as loud as it does. The same with tDECC. You don't have to have a 10,000 capacity rink (cough Mariucci and the Ralph cough) to make it a hella fun atmosphere for both the players and fans.

Yeah shame on those idiots for building arenas over 10,000 people that fill to capacity against any team that comes calling. :p
