Men's Hockey Announces 2010-11 Schedule

BURLINGTON, Vt. - The University of Vermont men's hockey team announced its 2010-11 schedule today. The Catamounts will play 19 home games and meet four teams that advanced to the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The schedule is highlighted by a two-game set at home against Denver, the annual Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup and three games against defending national champion Boston College.

"We are pleased to announce another exciting and extremely challenging schedule," Vermont head coach Kevin Sneddon said. "We've learned the value of playing one of the toughest schedules in college hockey and that trend certainly continues this year. We're thrilled to host Denver to start the season at Gutterson Fieldhouse, as Coach (George) Gwozdecky will have another excellent team."

"We've also maintained our close relationship with the ECAC by continuing to play St. Lawrence, Dartmouth, Yale and Harvard," Sneddon added. "Our Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup promises to be one of the strongest field of teams in recent years as Vermont will take on Ohio State and Harvard. Most importantly, our Hockey East schedule will provide our fans with the best college hockey has to offer every night."

The season begins on Sunday, Oct. 3 when Vermont hosts New Brunswick at 4 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The following weekend (Oct. 8 and 9) the Catamounts begin regular season play with two games at home against Denver (WCHA), who was a No. 1 seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

The Catamounts non-league schedule also includes three contests against ECAC opponents on the road. Vermont travels to Yale on Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs advanced to the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament before losing to Boston College in the Northeast Regional Final. Vermont also travels to Dartmouth on Sunday, Dec. 12 (4 p.m.) and St. Lawrence on Saturday, Dec. 18 (7 p.m.).

The 2009-10 Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Jan. 1 and 2 will include Army (Atlantic Hockey), Harvard (ECAC) and Ohio State (CCHA). Vermont will meet Ohio State in the opening round on Jan. 1 (7:05 p.m.) and will face Harvard in the second round on Jan. 2 (7:05 p.m.).

UVM's Hockey East opener is against Merrimack at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7:05 p.m. The Hockey portion of the schedule once again includes 27 league games. Vermont takes on defending national champion Boston College in a weekend set on Nov. 12 and 13 at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Catamounts visit the Eagles on Sunday, Nov. 28. Other Hockey East opponents include: Boston University, Maine, Massachusetts, UMass-Lowell, New Hampshire, Northeastern and Providence.

The Hockey East playoffs are set for March 11-13 at campus locations while the Hockey East Championships at the TD Garden in Boston will take place on March 18 and 19.

Vermont finished the 2009-10 season with a 17-15-7 (9-11-7 HEA) mark and earned a trip to the TD Garden for the Hockey East Championships while also going to the NCAA Tournament in the same season for the first time in program history. The Catamounts also posted a winning season for the sixth consecutive year for the first time at the Division I level.

Best thing about playing in HE is no matter who your OOC opponents are the schedule is going to be a tough one. The bad part is no matter who your OOC opponents are the schedule is going to be a tough one.

The season is long, but the Cats will get tested early on. Two games against DU will be a very key point to the season as I see it setting the tone early. A strong weekend will give the Cats some confidence against MC and ME who will likely be competitors later on in the season for playoff seeding. A poor weekend against DU followed by two of the teams in HE could make for a rough start and as we saw last year, every single point can be HUGE.

Of anything, I think one of the biggest keys to this years season in terms of a NCAA berth will be to gel early on and not lose those key early season match ups. 5 of the first 8 match ups are going to be against TUC's and possible 6 of 8. So those are necessary points.

A lot of ECAC match-ups which is good and bad. Yale will be a TUC and that over the past two years has been a pretty exciting match-up. SLU always has strong and gritty team and makes for a good game to watch. But I question scheduling Harvard with already having 3 ECAC teams. I have to imagine that is to replace Yale or SLU next year in the rotation.

But really I don't care. Drop the puck already!!

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Biggest concern I have is that we don't play a home game from Thanksgiving to New Years. I feel like we've struggled in December as a team more years than not...spending a month on the road will be tough.

Agree we have to start strong.....we need to win an absolute minimum of 2 out of those first four RS home games to get our pairwise started, otherwise we'll be playing catch up all year trying to make the NCAAs.

With the break for finals coming pretty early in December, not having many (or any) home games from Turkey Day to the new year is a common problem for most teams.

With Denver and BC on the schedule early on (and Maine), UVM is going to have to hold serve there. Those are pretty much sure fire TUCs by the end of the season. 2 with Denver, 3 with BC all before the end of November and again that 1 with Maine as a fairly likely TUC (not drinking the Kool Aid on Maine yet). If UVM struggles there, they'll be in big big trouble and playing PWR catch up all season long. That's a losing proposition. If they go .500 or better, they'll be in very good shape.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

The schedule is what it is, us fans can't do a thing about it.

I normally like to catch BC and BU early before they both get rolling but BC is likely to be rolling from the start this year and we don't have BU until late.

I don't mind not having the December home games as those are usually chopped up with lesser attendance anyway with the students away for several of them. On the other hand that is a LONG time without a home game for us hardcore fans. I forsee SLU and DC road trips to cure the itch.

Agree that the combination of DU and BC will pretty much make or break the early season confidence and jump start or sink the early technical rankings.

I think UVM has something to prove this year and the combination of lower expectations than last year, experienced D, young forward talent, and some healthy goalie competition will make for a decent start.

Alumni update. Victor Stalberg is traded to the Chicago Blackhawks today by the Maple Leafs.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

St. Louis resigned with the Bolts, 4 years 22.5 million which will put him at 38 and able to retire in Tampa Bay.

Well deserved for Marty. Congrats.

Also of note : The blues did not make an offer to Joe Fallon who is now an unrestricted free agent. Same with Kevin Regan. I see Corey Schnieder is also still playing in the minors. Tough for goalies to get a shot in the NHL. Seems, that most of the NHL squads are bringing in the Europeans to tender.

Hopefully Joe gets a new contract.

Hard to think about hockey when it's THIS nice out...

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

I like the heat but would prefer 80F during the day and 60F at night from April 1 to Nov 15 and a foot of pow every other night of the year....

That would be nirvanna

3 months and two days to first real home game

Also looks like the Hawks are pretty high on Vik,

Hawks GM "We acquired a left wing from Toronto (in the Versteeg deal) who wil make the team. Viktor Stalberg can skate like the wind, and could be on the second or third line.”
