UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Fall is almost upon us, sad to see a gorgeous summer end, but time to ramp up the hockey talk, UVM academics fire up in less than two weeks

and only 44 days until the exhibition game, that will fly by

Here is a video about Connor Anthoine, who is in training camp for the Lewiston Maineiacs of the QMJHL, on his big decision coming up in the near future:

It looks like he has surprised to date in their camp. Hopefully he sticks with his commitment to UVM. He is scheduled to arrive to start playing for the Cats. in either 2011 or 2012.

He is allowed to go to the team's training camp and not lose his NCAA eligibility, as long as he pays his own way.

No hype for the Cats. I think they surprise to the upside this year after that rather poor HE performance last year. Very glad to see that nobody has left early this year. The D should be physically punishing this year.

No hype is good. The Cats tend to play really well when people look past them and...well...not so much when they're hyped.

Here's another update on Connor Anthoine at Lewiston:

http://www.sunjournal.com/local-sports/story/897563

Looks like he does have a spot on the Lewiston team if he wants it. It's great seeing that he is able to make a QMJHL team, and to hear all the positive comments about the UVM recruit (great hands, attitude, etc.)...but obviously we could be a couple days from losing him if he decides to play for Lewiston. He is listed between 5'7" and 5'9", you'd think at that size he would be better suited for the college game. Let's hope for the best.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

The good news is that having recruits good enough to be faced with this decision is a good thing

However, it would suck to lose him

And he would probably love the college lifestyle if he went for it.

It would be interesting to take a poll of kids who were faced with this decision and how it came out for them

It's hard to beat a four year education from a good school no matter what happens later.

Perhaps a call from Martin St. Louis would be in order? Shorter player who benefited from playing college hockey, got a 4 year degree and seems to be doing really well income wise...

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Wow....that is big. Glad he stayed.

Yet another in a long line of small thinkgs that add up to UVM hockey being headed in the right direction to challenge for HE and national titles.

UVM should be ready for a run to the title in 2011.

Madore - senior

Stalberg - junior
McCarthy - junior
Pacan - junior
Franzon - junior

Brickley - Sophmore
White - Sophmore
Lenz -Sophmore

Lukko Freshman
Gerginson freshman
Anthoine freshman

The team will be tough...Sneddon needs to bring in a defensman this year to get going to avoid having 5 freshman D...

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Great news on Anthione! The kid and his family have their priorities straight, that is fantastic. And the pizza line will stay intact.

The staff brought in an offensive D man this year. Forgot his name, lots of vowels - something like Bruneteau.

I agree that the forwards will be strong in 2011/12 and 12/13 barring a lot of defections or early departures. But the D will be younger. This is the year to capitalize on the strong D, but the forwards are kind of thin in the upperclasses. Hopefully the sophs step up like I think they can. I believe that Stalberg, Pacan, McCarthy and Nilson-Roos all have good upside and hopefully we see it this year in front of the strong D core.

The cats will be competitive this year as well, I think the freshman class has some immediate impact players to go along with Stalberg, McCarthy and the other sophmores.

We really need to have the upperclassmen step up. Someone needs to have a breakout year a la Vik 2 years ago and Irwin last year. Wahs, Downing, and/or Burrows need to step up.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

There are two defensemen coming in this year. Nick Bruneteau (as mentioned earlier), who is an offensive defenseman who played for Shattuck-St. Mary’s last year:

http://blogs.burlingtonfreepress.com/oncampus/2010/04/22/defenseman-joins-uvm-hockey/

I would imagine that the coaching staff will give Nick a chance to contribute right away this year, as they are choosing to bring him in this year, while most of the teams recruiting him were telling him to play one more year in juniors.

The other is named Arthur Griem, who is more of a stay-at-home defenseman who was an All-Star last year playing in the EJHL.

Re: UVM Offseason Thread - building for a 3rd Straight Bid

Both of these defensemen should have a chance to compete with Herrington for that sixth spot after Medvec, Miller, Lawson, Mackenzie, Franzon.

It's good that Burrows moved up front because it would have been tougher to see 4 starting D all leave at once at the end of this season. Seasoning one or both of the freshmen will help the transition next year.

Sometimes technology just annoys me but that is a first and a worst combined into one.
