Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

Jaslow's Column Excerpt

Could we see down the road these teams once again together in a new New York State super league

But why would the SUNYAC schools want to join a bigger league,if doing so would reduce the chances of any one team getting a bid to the NCAA's?

(Just asking,not challenging anyone here.)

Maybe because their not afraid like other schools/conferences are. No ofense here but besides Oswego and Plattsburgh and a short stint Geneseo, who else has received bids into the NCAA's on a regular basis? Take those 2 teams and what's their record vs the ECAC West....the West havnt been over dominating those teams. To me having the ECAC West join just bring in 3 more top 2-3 teams. Its not like we are adding 5 mid-late 90's Middlebury teams or early 2000's RIT teams here...Oswego and Geneseo already play them now...Plattsburgh has never shied away from playing top competition..but on a year in year out basis its still Oswego/Platssburgh with the ECAC West teams sprinkled with Geneseo/Fredonia...until the West can step up and become a favorite on a consistent basis.

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

Whens Norwichs return to Elmira?? ....thought so...plus Castleton will probably be more competition than Elmira anyways....

Norwich has one spare game per year, and that doesn't change with the new league set up. The only difference in schedule commitments is that the annual game with Midd becomes a non-conference game. As for traveling, we did play Wentworth on the road a couple of years ago as our "extra" game.

Elmira just tied you the last two games of the series! Yes Plattsburgh holds the edge in the series, but not nearly as bad as the birds own Oswego.

Plus, the Soaring Eagles had started to run up a pretty good record at the Domes lately against Plattsburgh while Platty dominated in the Stafford.

You can't honestly tell me you aren't going to miss the Elmira game on the schedule. The history between these two teams runs as deep as any non-conference foes can in D-III.

Middlebury is actually the team that owes the return trip to Elmira BTW ;)

Try this?

Suppose it were a Super League with two 7-team divisions, each with their own autobid?

Re: Try this?

So hire a lawyer, have him/her read the rules, and figure out how to create two independent (but cooperating) leagues that play an interlocking schedule. I believe that's been done before.

I like the idea,if it's feasible.I think it's gonna be a tough sell to get any one league to accept all the ECAC-W teams, though.

Utica is an attractive option due to the gate-revenue generated.EC is kinda-sorta cut from the same cloth, times 0.33.Hobart is geographically in a position to merit a look...But who's gonna want to bus it for hours and hours to Aston and Rye,then return home with their feelings quite possibly hurt?I'm betting that heavy-hitters Oswego and Platty have zero interest in adding Neumann and Manhattanville to their travel schedules. What would they possibly have to gain?

IMO,the NCAA should get rid of D-3 autobids entirely, expand the field to 16,and run 4 de-facto regionals at the 4 top seeds, determined by the PWR.Then,it wouldn't matter how big or small your conference is;it would be all about scheduling tough opponents and winning.

Maybe someday. :)

This is very easy to setup as two indenpendent leagues both under the parentage of the SUNYAC. It would be identical to how the ECAC East, Northeast, and West are all independent leagues operating under the parentage of the ECAC today.

So if the SUNYAC teams allowed this....is there a wait period for an automatic bid?

Re: Try this?

Re: Try this?

SUNYAC WEST
BUFF STATE
FREDONIA

GENESEO
BROCKPORT

ELMIRA
HOBART

OSWEGO

SUNYAC EAST
PLATTSBURGH
POTSDAM

UTICA
MORRISVILLE

MANHATANVILLE
NEUMANN

CORTLAND

If and when Canton joins move Cortland to the West, and Canton to the East....Neumann is 35 miles or so closer then Plattsburghs trip to Fredonia....and 60 miles closer to Manhatanville then Geneseo.....The SUNYAC West would all be close to another with the farthest driving distance being Oswego to Fredonia (which they do anyways).

Would they have to deal with the issue concerning single sport conferences? Seems like that could be an issue
