Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

Fish:
I think you have had to many sleepless nights in the shanty!! There be Zero Pool B bids this year. Pool C is the only route for Utica . And if you have not figured it out there are 3 Poo
l C bids available.

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

I've thought about this in regard to all D3 sports and wondered what the impact would be. The source of Pool C bids is in the excess of teams in Pool A conferences above the 6.5 teams per slot NCAA mandate. 7 is too close to 6.5 for many at large bids to be created when leagues tend to hover right at the minimums. Making the minimum for a bid 8 instead of 7 would make sense, but there is another factor - you now throw all of the 7 team conferences into Pool B and that could actually end us right back in the same place. Non-winners in Pool A conferences wouldn't get to "swim" in Pool B.

Pardon my ignorance but what is Pool B? It doesn't seem to exist now. I read somewhere else on this thread that you can't cure stupid, but I think you can cure ignorance.

There is always a Pool B, there just isn't always any available berths for them.

Pool B consists of independent institutions, and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification.

Pool B is reserved for independents and members of conferences that don't get auto bids. There is only the ECAC West in that category this year. Not enough teams to create a spot in the field. The "other site" has all the details in the "Bracketology" series.

OK, so that's where I dropped the ball *this* time... I take it that there has to be some minimum number of teams that qualify for that pool. How many would that be?

(Why so? is another question entirely, but I gave up on making any intuitive sense of the D-3 process years ago.)

Basically, there must be as many teams-per-bid in Pool B as there are in Pool A, the idea being that you don't want to make it more advantageous to be an independent than to actually play in a conference. If i told you that you could go play in a 5-team league and try to beat those other 4 teams to get into the NCAAs, or you could go play in a 10-team league and have 9 teams standing between you and the tournament... which would you choose, given only that information?

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

The smaller conference, in most cases... But probably not the ECAC-West, available AQ or not. (The answer cuts both ways in D-3, where such disparity exists.)

Thanks for the input, though. It's much appreciated. I'm guessing that I'm not alone in my ignorance here.
