Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - 12/14 Update

Nice synopsis.(I always feel sorry for the cows.)

But you forgot to add "stop for a drink in Gouveneur." Believe me,you're gonna need it!

Dodge military maneuvers from Fort Drum.

The trip from I-81 to Canton / Potsdam

Dairy farm, dairy farm, dairy farm, town.
Dairy farm, dairy farm, dairy farm, dairy farm, town.
Dairy farm, dairy farm, dairy farm, town.
repeat until you hit Canton.
Repeat 2x add a Wal-Mart and then you're in Potsdam.

Very similar to the trip from Northfield to Canton (know it well from my daughter's college years)

My daughter's comment - ever notice how the 11 on the route 11 sign looks likes an electrical outlet after a while. Oh yeah, and the farms with the blue roofs...

Most from nyc consider anything north of the Tappan Zee "upstate"....sad

True!

When I was growing up on Long Island, my cub scout troop had a field trip to West Point. I was thrilled to death. "I'm going to Upstate NY! I'm going to Upstate NY!"

How many more years till Long Island is under water?

Hey, it took thousands of years for the glaciers to scrape all that crap off New York and pile it up for the ocean to wash away, give it time :p ;)

You left out the part about almost falling off the edge of the Earth...

I grew up in Illinois. Same thing there, except it was Chicago and downstate. The population was pretty much 50/50 between Chicago and the rest of the state.

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

apparently rumor is that the ECAC West has identified 2 schools that are looking at adding ice hockey as a sport. Don't know who these schools are but they might want to stop wasting time and help them to achieve this before it is too late.

This was discussed at the start of the thread and in
Biggars article

They'd better be schools with strong club programs or sure-fire recruiting pipelines...Or else!

If I'm looking to start up a D-3 program, the last conference I'd want to join would be the ECAC-W meat-grinder.Utica has fared decently, but look at the venue they have to attract talent. It'll be a steep hill to climb for the average school.

Don't forget not so long ago (by my perspective) Manhattanville was a startup program that jumped into the ECAC West. They did just fine. Neumann was an indy program that was on the same level as Scranton before they joined the ECAC West. On the other hand, LVC was an established ECAC NE program that had a conference title. It's all about institutional commitment.

What other league has added four teams in the last 12 years, where one has captured a national title, another is a perrenial participant in the NCAA's, and a third leads all of division 3 in attendance? Having such success from three out of four new teams is a pretty decent success rate.

Sounds to me that the ECAC West is exactly the league that I would want to start a team in if the school administration is willing to make the commitment to the sport. The league has a proven track record of going out of their way to support new programs and giving them every opportunity to succeed.

But then again, I'm biased:-)

Also, for the record, I have heard from multiple sources the schools that are in the very early stages of perhaps adding division 3 college hockey, either thru stepping up from club or starting a team from scratch. Per both their and my feelings, it is too early to publish such information. But I have been in direct contact with at least one of the schools and as their plans develop, USCHO will bring you their story.

So we can expect to see it on USCHO a few days after they win their first National Championship ;) jk Thanks for the inside scoop Scoot, and as someone who isn't biased the ECAC West is a great conference for someone to go to who isn't afraid to go against tough competition on a nightly basis

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

Some strategic planners for Daniel Webster College and Anna Maria College have seriously considered NCAA DIII Ice Hockey as potential future projects.
