Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - 12/14 Update

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - 12/14 Update

Crazy thought here, perhaps the SUNYAC after adding Utica could use the Aud., as the host for the conference finals? One and done type format, games on Fri. and Sat.?

Not a bad idea, but I'm not sure the Aud would be quite as packed with the same beer swilling townies to watch say Fredonia vs. Geneseo or Plattsburgh vs. Morrisville...

True, especially if it were a regular season game, but for a conference championship tournament - maybe some of the former semi-pro following, beer swilling townies would join the 4 schools traveling townies -and imagine if Utica was one of the 4 schools

Agree...when was the last time Plattsburgh and Oswego were not in the SUNYAC semi finals? There is a very good chance you would see both schools in Utica probably close to, if not more then 80% of the time.

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - 12/14 Update

I think many of us have to get away from the ideology of the top ranked school hosts. And lets be honest here as well, its either Oswego or Platty that hosts every year. (cue the posts of " duh tell your team to do better") Think of the revenue of having the semis and finals at a neutral location. I think something is in the works here folks.

They tried that with the basketball championship tournament for both men and women, with a final four format for each, all on the same weekend. It bombed big time no matter how many years they kept giving it a go and no matter how many games you got for your money.

BTW, for those talking about beer, a SUNYAC sanctioned playoff game would not allow beer.

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

Lets look 2 yrs (1.5 now) down the road assuming that the Saints decide not to, or are not allowed to, play for the D-III title and Utica is playing SUNYAC.

(a) The ECAC-E is OK with 8 members and an AQ
(b) The ECAC-W is without an AQ, without a Pool B, and is at the mercy of the selection committee to get an at at-large bid.

Math: 8 + 4 = 12 which when you divide by 2 does not give you enough for two AQ conferences.

Somebodies decide that the status quo is not viable.

OK, do we do this???? ( ) indicate travel partners:
ECAC Pretzel: A(Elmira, Hobart), B(Manhattanville, Neumann), C(Skidmore, Castelton)
ECAC CCCP: A(USM, UNE), B(Babson, UMB), C(NEC, Norwich)
Play your division 2x (10) and other 1x (6) = total 16 conference games
Schedule (these are not consecutive weeks, but who plays who on the conference weeks):
Week 1: PA @ PB CC @ PC CA @ CB
Week 2: PC @ PA PB @ CB CA @ CC
Week 3: PB @ PC CC @ CB PA @ CA
Week 4: CB @ PA; PB @ CC CA @ PC
Week 5: Travel Partners H & H
Week 6: CC @ PA PC @ PB CB @ CA
Week 7: PC @ CB PB @ PA CC @ CA
Week 8: CA @ PB PC @ PA CB @ CC

The rest of the weeks (spread out through the yr) you have your non conference games / tournaments / showcases.
Playoffs: top 4 each division - weekend 1 -- 1v4 and 2v3. Weekend 2: Higher in CCCP plays lower Pretzel; Higher Pretzel plays lower CCCP. Where? At highest survivor? or do we alternate between ECAC-P and ECAC-C??

This could become the strongest conference in the East. With UNE getting an Alfond rink, and the level of league, plus some classic venues, recruiting for the ECAC-Y(ankee) should be a snap. Unless we get total parity, there exists a strong possibilty of a Pool C bid.

Re: Utica to the SUNYAC? - Biggar's Column

I don't know if this has be addressed with the talk of no umbrella for 2 SUNYAC divisions But what about 2 "SUNYAC/WEST" leagues (like ECAC East, ECAC West & ECAC Northeast) with an interlock?

What would it take to form two new Leagues?

NORTH NY league:
Plattsburgh
Potsdam
Oswego
Cortland
Morrisville
Utica
Manhattanville

SOUTH NY league:
Elmira
Hobart
Neumann
Geneseo
Brockport
Buffalo State
Fredoina

You might be surprised...As long as the beer is flowing,Utica townies might show up just for the sake of something to do,right?(It's a shame that none of those metro areas you mentioned lack "townies" with few entertainment options, but what ya gonna do?)

Granted,Utica isn't the cultural center that is Fredonia/Plattsburgh/Morrisville/Geneseo...But maybe if The Met isn't giving a performance of La Traviata in any of those hot-spots on the weekend in question, some people will deign to show up in this backwater..?It could happen!

Utica drew 4,000 hosting the ECAC-West playoffs a few years back. They would sell a lot of tickets again,if UC itself was in the mix.If not, attendance would be lousy...Kinda like it would be in any of the the places you mentioned,if the local team was teeing them up at the time.

D-3 doesn't care about fannies in the seats, and that's a good thing.May the highest seed host,no matter where they are.(Aside from Hobart. That place sucks.)But Utica, armpit that it is,is a perfect fit in a geographic sense for everyone involved.

No beer will ever be allowed at a SUNYAC playoff game. No amount of money will ever change their minds.

Even the NCAA foregos MILLIONS of dollars in potential sponsorship money from beer companies. It will never happen.

Cliff Lee did give up $30 million to go to Philadelphia versus NY, so money does have its limits, but economics are changing - my industry is seeing the once “never happen” non-gambling states open up to gambling every year, so I would never say never. Also sponsorship (i.e. endorsement) versus pre-existing conditions can easily - if desired - be separated.

I don't know what you mean by this ... but remember whenever the NCAA takes over a venue for a playoff game, all ads and mentions of beer companies has to come down or be covered over. In one Frozen Four, they had to slap NCAA stickers over every single seat cup holder because they were adorned with Budweiser logos. And all taps and beer sales in the building are shut down.

I will say emphatically, will never happen. How many pretzels do you want to bet on it?

When forced to make a decision, there is only one choice that can be made, the one perceived at the time to be the easiest to fulfill.

And as for the pretzels, you would have to wait forever (unlike, say a single season, such as 2004-05) to know if it never happens ;)

He is absolutely, positively, without a doubt, no question, at the end of the day, 100% correct...
