Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Everything aside, we plan on going to Saturday's game, how will the ticket situation be? Same as usual, buy it at the gate, or will we be forced to buy them online? I'm going to need 3 of them and that $4.50 "fee" adds up.
Just show up a bit early and you should be able to buy at the box office. Or I know a "scalper" who just may have 3 extra tickets ;) ;) ;)

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Read his post again...

Sprain/injury = What actually happened.
Season-ending injury = EXACTLY what he said he was praying for.

I get that it was meant as a joke. But it was in really poor taste and those types of jokes should never be acceptable. All I was saying was that the sports mentality that allows those jokes to exist is EXACTLY why incidents like the ones I mentioned occur... Sports has become less about sportsmanship, and more about winning at all costs. That mentality brews hatred. And hatred degrades humanity.

As for the 10-goal mark, he was referring to a common joke on this forum (originating from this 24-0 beat-down RIT put on Neumann in 2002) where we say that any team that has achieved a 10-goal margin or more on their opponent in a single game has "no class". Backdraft was simply trying to point out that jokes/statements like this show how absolutely classless the person making the joke/statement is at that moment.
thanks for clearing up the 10 goal thing, couldnt have put it better

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

While you guys are arguing about injuries and their hypothetical lengths..... i have some actual injury news to pass along.

Doug Marshall- Out at least a week with a hip flexor problem. Unlikely to return to the lineup until after the Amherst

Steve Zappia- Will miss several weeks with a partially torn MCL. He's walking. That's the good news.

With that... it's all hands on deck for UC defensively until those 2 can return. UC now only has 6 available D.

Schmitt-Etts

Baird-Slowikowski

Olivieri-Adams

Knocking on wood that nobody else gets hurt.

Those pairings aren't bad, as long as Adams stays handy to his own zone on the attack and doesn't attempt to clear the puck out through his own crease from behind his net, as he has done so often in the past.

Morton could be moved back to D quite easily, but he tends to have the same flaws in judgment as does Adams.

The game plan(s) IMO would be to have the forwards go balls-out to the net, and to have the D play conservatively at all times... UC's 'tending should complete the equation, but the scores will be tight in any case.

Cheating is such a harsh term (and one I often use in this situation....). Perhaps a more PC term would be Creative Hockey Enhancement of Athletic Talent Involving Nonstandard Grants.
This goes with the pink bunnies into D-III lore.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

11-2..? Wow.

One could argue whether UC is that good, or Elmira that bad, but during the first period (when hockey was actually played ) there could be no doubt in any reasonable mind regarding which was the far better team.

The other 66% of the game was embarrassing. Thirty-plus penalties, three DQs and a coach ( or two? ) ejected... Just a mess to watch. There have been a couple of really ugly games involving Neumann and M'ville there over the years, but this was an all-time low for sure. Put me in mind of an ECHL contest.

Having said that, I'm loving what I see from Utica so far. This team's compete-level is beyond outstanding.

How about Educate...four goals and two assists with a natural hat trick in the second period ? I would love to see tonight's game but after Colgate beat Dartmouth tonight with three seconds left I have to go to tonight's Harvard game.

DQ's...thirty some penalties...bet the beer was flowing !

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

As much as I love a good old fashion beat-down laid on Elmira, last nights games was downright ugly. I've never seen an EC team as undisciplined as what I saw last night, and I've seen some pretty rough RIT-EC matches going back to the '80s. The refs didn't help either, as 3 of Uticas goals were into nets that were off. One in the 2nd was practically against the back boards before the puck went in and the ref still allowed it. This is the first UC game I've seen this season, and I was impressed. They were clearly faster, more talented, and hungrier than Elmira.

The intensity cranked up in the second after UC took a 5 min major running the goalie, then a second major and DQ against Litito. I can't say anything about either call as I didn't see them. Next thing you know, the coaches are going at it through the glass. That's when the real class/ugliness started and chuck-a-pucks and water bottles started flying. I don't know how much of it was beer driven, as the offenders I saw appeared to be high school aged kids. Luckily folks pointed them out and UPD escorted them out of the building. There is NO TIME when it is excusable for folks in the stands to take physical action against the players on the ice. It is uncalled for and shows absolutely NO CLASS. I for one would like to apologize for the *****h0les in the stands that got involved.

As far as the action on the ice, Educate had some sick moves out there. At least last night he appeared to me to be the best player on the ice.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Not all that surprised by the Saturday night loss to Elmira. Utica has a history of crazy, hot-headed, blow-out Friday night victories followed up by tough losses the next night. I've certainly seen it before. Maybe if Therrien started tonight it could have turned out differently.

What spurred-on the whole fiasco on was this: a fan was reaching above the glass over the EC bench and filming the screaming match between the coaches when an Elmira player grabbed the former's cell and crushed it. Pursuant to that event came the chaos and the removal of a number of people.

This is certainly not presented as gospel, but it came from a UPD member who witnessed the event and personally ejected a row of fans.

As far as Saturday went, I suppose it was a reality-check. UC carried the play for about 70% of the game and nearly came back from a 5-0 deficit, but EC made them pay for some egregious defensive lapses and some iffy 'tending.

This team is not there yet, apparently. They are good, but they need to play for 60 minutes to win games in the W.

What the H happened last night ??? Down 5-0 after winning 11-2 ?

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

A HUGE THANK YOU to UCBadger for sharing his tickets with us, very much appreciated. EC looked much better last night than just about all of their previous games. Several players getting ice time that normally would have not showed how badly they want to earn a starting spot. Delmo looked like he's finally settled down.
UC is a good, fast, hard hitting team, can't wait for the "Rubber Game" at the Domes later on.
Thanks again UCBadger.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

You certainly could call it that (as I did last night, myself ) but Utica could well have scored five times in the 1st... They had the upper-hand for all 20 minutes, and for most of the game.

Chalk this one up to Demelo's timely saves and the to intrinsic vagaries of hockey. The SOGs favored UC 42-28, and that was roughly indicative of how the play unfolded, IMO.

I'm confident that Utica is the much better team, but they need to pay attention to EC's top line down in The Domes... They looked like a vintage Elmira line. ( Has Owens been there ten years, or does it just feel like it?!? )

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Wasn't it more a "reality check" for Elmira after getting blown out ??

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

You might want to say that but the reality is, Elmira KNOWS that we are not the same team from last year, we are loaded with Freshmen who need to adjust to College level of play. We as fans ( one's that understand the game ;-) ) realized coming into this season that we would not be racking up the wins and are just hoping for a respectable season, above .500. This team has the potential of ANY team before them, remember, Utica didn't fair so well 3 yrs. ago either and actually came in LAST place in the ECAC-W after playoffs were done ;-)

I attended Saturday's game and was very impressed in how well they played, some of those guys had very little playing time up until then and took advantage of their opportunity to play.
Utica is good, and fast but a long way from a "Final Four" team.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

I am scrupulous in avoiding using the pronoun "we" when referring to any team I follow, for the simple reason that I have absolutely nothing to do with the success or failure of them... Similarly, it's tiresome for me to hear others do it. It harkens back to my childhood, when we little boys would boast about whose father could beat up the other.

Utica was clearly the better team during both games this past weekend, the split notwithstanding. The upcoming game v. highly-regarded Amherst ( who UC defeated last year, FWIW ) will be another small nugget of evidence as to whether UC is finally ready to take the step beyond also-ran status. We fans here have been waiting a long time for that to happen, and if that circumstance entails leap-frogging an Elmira along the way, I'm fairly confident that Earth won't explode in a ball of flames as a result.

An aside here: I notice that UC has decided to report attendance based on tickets sold this season, as opposed to reporting actual turnstile counts. Both EC games were around 1,000 empty seats short of a full house. I find this disingenuous at best, and I'll bet that TicketBastard has something to do with it.

If you've ever been to a D-1 Regional, you'll understand what I'm talking about... UC is playing an embarrassing shell-game right now. I have to wonder if any other D-3 program counts "attendance" as they do.

Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season

Talking to an avid fan who was at the games...he said the two coaches were fighting and received DQ's for Saturday night's game ? Is this true ?
