Re: Utica College Pioneers 2012-13 Season
Last nights game was closer than the final score. The Pios were a little sluggish out of the gate (first 2 periods), likely due to the layoff but they did seem to get their legs back in the 3rd. Maybe motivated by Gary between periods or desperation. It was a 3-2 game with 13 minutes left.
Therrien made some solid stops and looks to be back. Gaffney is a stud, great goal from the side with no angle. Laughed when a lone $32 fitted UC cap hit the ice for his hat trick! Good to see Chlanda back. This team has some depth, it must be tough for Gary to scratch 6 skaters. Naz impressed me. They're a good addition to the E-W and will hold their own this year.
Next two weekends (2 at Neumann, 2 home vs. Elmira) will be a good gauge on how good this team really will be this year.
Also, did anyone else notice in the E-W preview article on here they mention Evan Smith returning? He was gone in June. Appreciate the article but...
Absolutely not a blowout, except in the box-score.
Naz has a terrific first line. #16 ( Zavorin ) and #27 ( Ciccarello ) really stood out; the latter was the best player on the ice, IMO. Not shocking to see that both those guys are Juniors on a team composed mostly of Freshmen. Pretty talented and well-coached squad overall... If that team is a doormat this year, it's going to be a temporary condition, IMO.
UC is looking very deep. Who knew Hogan could stick-handle through traffic that way, or that Gaffney would have improved his game so much, or that Therrien could flash the leather they way he did in making that astounding glove-save..? I'm delighted with the effort so far, but I agree with you that it's making the healthy scratches a difficult decision.
I would like to see Santiago and Slowitkowski dress for every game, for instance... The D is playing better as a whole, but Marshall is still an adventure, and I'd play Slowy ahead of him every night, and twice on Tuesdays.
Hard to find much to complain about so far; we'll have to see how the W shakes-out... Right now, Utica doesn't look as though they're going to be bottom-feeders in '12/'13, as has been the norm of late.
