Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Yes it is just one of four main criteria....but undoubtedly the most important. Elmira's 7 losses already has them out no matter what they do from here on in. Utica has 4 losses, 4 ties (Equivalent to 6 losses) which is probably too many. In addition they are 1-2-2 against teams likely to be ranked in Top 15 East AND have a rather poor SOS. I think they would need a lot of help and luck to gain a Pool C. Hobart , on the other hand, has some credentials working for them and aren't done quite yet. They are 3-3-1 against top teams and if they win out, or something close, they could squeak in. Any loss in the next couple of weeks could mean the end.

With Plattsburgh, Norwich, Williams, Babson, Trinity, Geneseo, Oswego, Boston all still very much alive, it is going to be tough. Like I said, if Platty, Norwich and Williams would win their tourney's, Hobart could rate ahead of Geneseo,Oswego, Trinity and Boston for a Pool C.

keep in mind as was pointed out on the other site, the East only ranks the Top 8 and its no longer "once ranked always ranked". The only ranking that matters is the last secret ranking....

If I had to guess right now your top 8 in no particular order:

Plattsburgh
Williams
Norwich
Babson
Geneseo
Trinity
UMass-Boston
Hobart

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Utica needs to start piling up the W's...and fast.

Hobart and Utica are the only two ECAC W teams with realistic shots at getting a bid most likely and Utica's is fading fast.

I think that if you consider the smokey-room aspect of the selection process, then you can't count Elmira out... Even in this off-year for the W, there isn't much statistical difference among many Eastern teams, and the committee will try to get a W team into the field, if recent history is any indication.

EC could be that team, but only if they take 3-4 points from Utica this weekend, and finish strong after that. Both Hobart and Utica have reasonable chances, too.

There appears to be a great deal of disparity in the KRACH this year (for example), but if you look down to the third significant figure in many comparisons, we're talking about a whisker's width here or there, and not much to hang your hat on one way or the other in terms of that sparse data.

If I had to bet on it today, I'd predict that Hobart will get a bid, but that this weekend's results between EC and UC will possibly produce another contender for the W's lone berth in the NCAAs.

I saw that on "the other site". I must have missed the announcement on going to 8 ranked teams in the east -the post on the other site was the first I'd heard of that change.

Curious what people think about such a significant reduction in the # of NCAA-ranked teams in the East? Pros, cons?

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

I don't see how ranking only 8 teams is going to give anyone a definitive view of the best teams in the East. In fact, at this point only Williams (3-1) and Hobart (2-1) has a winning record against what you would believe to be the top 8. Plattsburgh, Babson and Geneseo are all .500 while Norwich, Trinity and UMass Boston are below .500.

In the past I've been concerned "fattening" up their Record vs. Ranked by beating the #12, #13 type seeds and not playing the real tough teams at the top. Perhaps the NCAA saw that as well and are taking a much smaller sample. I think maybe top 10 would even give us a better read. That would bring in say Utica, NEC and the results would change. Interestingly, Trinity has played only 1 game vs. top 8 and has only 1 remaining. Hobart will not play another team likely to be in top 8.

Yeah I think the East got the shaft in this scenario....The West gets 6 ranked teams to the East's 8...I think 10 would have got it a little closer to where it should be for East/West proportionate sake.

SMH. Well, that should be the final nail in the coffin for NCAA tourney aspirations. Would be nice if they could get it together and end their season by winning the W. In either case, this year will definitely go down as an UnderaChievement. :(

That is absolutely the case so far, and tonight's game was a prime example...

I saw only the 3rd and the OT. Utica was on EC like white on rice throughout that span, and even survived a buck-thirty of a 5X3 in OT.

Both of the tap-in EC goals I saw were the direct result of egregious defensive negligence by Utica forwards, who left attackers all by their lonesome at the far post in order to (stupidly) chase the puck on the other side. It's very frustrating to see these sort of breakdowns in basic fundamentals costing UC games.

This is all on Heenan right now... Anybody on that team who can skate at all and grasp his assignment should have been able to put a body on the last two Elmira goal-scorers, for the love of Christ.

I'm not going to through-in the towel just yet; Utica has the talent to run the table and to get a bid. (Not holding my breath on that one, though... This is very clearly not looking like Utica's year.)

Morale seems low and Nazareth keeps winning. Olivieri has never played better.

Olivieri was a HUGE loss for UC, they've tanked since he left. I'm wondering if he left because of Heenan. A lot of other upsets last night including Platty and Hobart. Wth happened in the St Norberts hame, 11-1

Gary was absolutely disgusted at UC's performance, and didn't attempt to conceal his displeasure throughout the game. During one EC rush, he jumped up on the boards and was literally screaming at one of his back-peddling defense-men. More than a few times he retreated to the back of the bench and buried his head in his hands; the players rarely - if ever - turned to talk to him, and didn't seem to be communicating at all.

JHC, Shabby... He wasn't a "huge" loss by any means, and UC was underachieving big-time while he was still on the roster, FCS!

Yes, apparently he and Heenan had some philosophical differences re: how D should be played, but Donny was hardly the lynchpin at Utica.... Not even close. Very nice young man and all -I actually talked with him once- but not a game-changer relative to the rest of the talent Utica has.

Consider this: Utica put 104 SOG on EC over the weekend, and only managed a split in the closing minutes of tonight's game...

(That's the problem here: UC makes every opposing goalie look like Patrick Roy.)

Thanks for your input, Mrs. Olivieri, and feel free to post on the Naz thread, if they have one.

(I actually took the time to look-up Donny's combined stats, and he's 2-6-8 in 20 games between UC and Naz... We are not running out of Kleenex over here as a result of his departure.)

"Everyone", Oats..?

I don't presume to "represent" Utica hockey in any way, shape, or form... I'm merely an avid fan since Day One, and yes, I have my opinions as a result of seeing every home game and a fair number or away contests.

Give me a little credit for sticking to commenting on what I have actually witnessed. I offer no uninformed opinions, nor lame pun-links, nor any comments whatsoever on any other team threads, unlike many others on here who apparently have no better use for their time than to opportunistically swing in here when they smell a chance to mock Utica.

Along those lines, if you have anything of substance to offer regarding some first-hand knowledge of this season's UC team, I'm all ears...

(Isn't that what these threads are supposed to be about?)
