Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Few commits for next year I've seen announced.

Anthony McVeigh F-Carleton Place Canadiens 43GP 7-10-17
Max Bartell F-Walpole Express 29GP 11-9-20
Kevin Valenti F-Northern Cyclones 29GP 27-29-56
Dalton Carter D-Northern Cyclones 27GP 4-21-25
Spencer Landry G-Hartford Jr Wolfpack 21GP .928% 2.60 GAA

More to come. Looks like some good players, and a solid goalie to push Zelzer.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Heenan said this yesterday: "Yeah, we're 10-3-2, but we're an angry hockey team... We all know that we can do much better."

Utica should have 12 wins, at least. (And none vs. Oswego, just to be clear.) They haven't gotten many bounces so far, but whatever...

UC will have had a disappointing season if it doesn't make the trip to Lewiston; it's too good a team to settle for perching on the bubble.

Those Cyclones guys have fancy stats; is the league they play in any good?

The local movement has begun, it appears.

Bartell(Rome)
Landry(New Hartford)

I think Garrett Reilley, who plays with Bartell in Walpole (And is also from Rome) is a realistic possibility to join them. We'll see.

But Valenti is a monster pickup.... http://www.usahockey.com/news_article/show/326272?referrer_id=752796

Landry and Valenti played against each other in highschool state final at aud. Valenti from upstate NY too.

(Sounds as though he's getting a little D-1 attention... Guess we'll have to wait and see about that.)

UC has definitely had some locals who contributed; Morton and Hobaica come immediately to mind.

I saw both Reilly and Bartell play in HS. Didn't consider either one of them to possess the requisite foot-speed to show-up at any level of college hockey, but they were very young then.

Again, we'll see.

I meant in the sense that since Morton, we haven't gotten anyone local, and now is a solid time to re-load with those great RFA and New Hartford teams becoming college hockey age.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Just a heads up for tonight's game at Brockport. WPNR will be covering it but via webstream only at http://www.mixlr.com/wpnr907

That was a really good quality free-stream; had the chance to watch most of it at work.

Another frustrating game for UC, though... That 5x3 goal-against was hard to take, the D-play was awful at times, but Utica should have won that puppy by 3 or more just the same.

This team swarms the net, but just doesn't finish with much of any efficacy... And I don't know why.

D corps is in severe need of some medical miracles. Down to 4 available, 3 legitimately healthy. Jide played a fair amount of ice time tonight. Slowy is out. Walker is out. Both are injured. I'm going to withhold injury details to keep myself out of trouble here.

Baird-Kirisits
Zappia-Hertz
Morton-Idowu were your D-pairs tonight.

On that note, buckle up. It's going to be a slightly bumpier ride in the stretch run than we anticipated.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

("Bumpier" indeed... Could actually be a free-fall. )

The much-improved D-play was a vital key in UC making the NCAAs last year, but the blue-line is in shambles right now... If Gary can figure it out, he's my D-3 coach of the year.

What's wrong with Slowi, the famous "lower body" report ?

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

In everyone's opinion, how many more losses can Utica have before being eliminated from NCAA consideration? They have 9 games left and possibly 2 playoff games. If they ran the table they would be 21-3-3 which would probably be enough for a pool C. Anything short of that, I don't know. Even 9-2 would put them at 19-5-3 which probably won't do it. The lack of quality wins this season along with the rather pedestrian performance by ECAC West has left us looking at the conference as a "zero-bid" conference at this point. Thoughts?

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Everyone except Adrian has at least two losses so far, there will e lot's of teams with 5-6 losses when it's over. It's early.

Certainly could happen that the W gets shut-out this season, yes... It's clearly been a down year so far. Way down.

UC definitely gets in if they run the table... They won't, but even 18-6-3 gets them in, if they win the RS and the conference tournament. The same general argument could be made for Hobart and Elmira.

The problem with the ratings right now is that so many Eastern teams are so bunched-up, in a statistical sense... Once you get past Williams and Platty, you can pretty-much throw the next several best teams into a hat.

Without compromising anyone's privacy, can you indicate if any or all of the missing D are expected to return this season?

Hanth will not be returning to the team, or competitive hockey. The indication i have gotten is that Jordan's injury is career ending.

As for Walker and Slowy, Both injuries depend on severity. I think we'll see Ryan back before Slowy. Slowy's injury will most likely take a few weeks.

Some one needs to call into Keeley and ask him about the Lakers!
