The stars are aligned for UC to gain some significant SOS points tomorrow.

All they need to do is to beat OSU on the road, and to root for Hobart to down Platty on the road, and to do likewise for Neumann v. Middlebury on the road...

(Simple, right?)

Still, if the planets manage to converge, we'll see a sea-change in the KRACH, and a badly-needed one for the W.

Home. Or road doesn't matter to the the NCAA and and neither does Ken's Vodoo ranking system matter (or any body else's. For that matter)

Just I threw-in that I was talking about OOC road-games for Champ's dubious edification... I do realize that the data is not in any way weighted on the basis of venue.

And as far as murky "Vodoo" (sic) goes, Ken has nothing on you, based on what I saw last year. (I'll admit that I haven't even bothered to look at "the other site" this season.) Yet, I will agree with your implied point that any statistical ranking in D-3 this season is greatly suspect, due to the unusual parity that apparently exists within the division, and the typical dearth of HTH comparisons.



Getting to the on-ice data, Hobart came through, Neumann didn't, and UC barely managed a sister-kisser at Oswego... The W is looking very pedestrian for the first time in many years, and the East in general is a cluster f#*K. No particular team has distinguished itself in any meaningful way out here.

Statistically speaking, the one team that has a big national footprint is Adrian. All those bus-rides out here, and all those wins... They are looking like a bye-team to me right now, no doubt about it.

But unlike the "adaptation" of the Bradley-Terry logistical regression approach, I have published a full explanation of what I do, and explain why the rankings work out the way they do in my weekly analysis. The advocates of KRACH don't know where the numbers come from, what affects them, and most importantly no sense of the fact that any measurement based on a sampling of data has an inherent margin of error. I very much dislike the use of statistical information as though it were an absolute 100% accurate portrayal of anything. The important thing to understanding data is to understand the context, and my objection to "KRACH" is that the context of the data is not understood unless you understand logistic regression.

I'm not sure that anyone believes that any statistical model comes even close to providing 100% accuracy, for starters... (I took a year of stats in college, then applied it to my work in the field, and was left scratching my head via the fact that stats don't necessarily apply with any accuracy when rating living creatures' performances.)

All we are seeking here is the most objective and verifiable method of processing data, and what it boils-down to me is this: there isn't enough unequivocal data so far this year to rank D-3 with any degree of coherence. (Eg., is Williams 20 teams ahead of Utica in any rational sense?)

I've preferred the KRACH in the past, since it has usually predicted/reflected the on-ice results better than the other metrics out there, but this season is such a mess in the East that I don't fathom that any objective yardstick can accurately take it's measure.

Still, it's fun to take a stab at it, and perhaps the numbers will better lend themselves to analysis later in the year.

Yes the Ephs are. Perceptions do not seem to make that true, but Williams's SoS is higher than Utica's.

Thing is, the assumed statistical differentiation vis-a-vis a whole bunch of teams in the East doesn't amount to much of anything this year.... And there's no reasonable way to sort it out right now.

(No offense to Williams -my best work buddy is a "Purple Cow"- but Utica wins that CO-comparison even as we speak, and is 15-20 spots below them in both attempts to rank D-3..? Tell me how that makes any real sense.)

That aspect of the metric certainly doesn't add-up, but, again, there is a severe paucity of (functionally) unequivocal data this year, and that fact is on-display across the board right now, via both The Krach and our Prof.
