Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

I believe St. Thomas or St. John's still play in a rink they share with a D1 team, maybe St. Cloud? And that rink sits 4 or 6,000 I think. Back in the early 2000's that game would push capacity too between USJ and UST If I recall correctly.
"...upon further review..." St Johns does indeed share the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center with St. Cloud State and has a seating capacity of 5,763 - they are averaging aprox 240 fans so far this season....

Wentworth plays at Matthews Arena which they share with Northeastern and holds around 6,000. I watched a game earlier this season against Salve and it looked like they had about a 100 people in there. Then there is Suffolk which plays at Walter Brown, home of the BU women and former home of the BU men, which holds over 3500 and I figure they probably don't get much more than a 100 people in there most games.

Reminds me of a few ACHA D2 game I worked at over my 3 years with Siena...

One game at the Conte Forum (home of BC hockey), capacity of ~8000, attendance of ~100. Two games at the Whittmore Center (home of UNH), capacity of ~6500, attendance of ~40.

I quoted Prof for the sake of context alone. (At least he provides substantial posts from time to time, and isn't here just for the sole purpose of dumping on UC.)
I like to think that some of that is professional courtesy. ;). But lets not minimize the effects of good upbringing. :D

Yes, I'm with you (and the others above) in saying that venue-size isn't the reason that D-3 often draws tiny crowds; by and large, D-3 hockey is a very small-time sport... But I'll reiterate that attendance means pretty-much nothing to me in terms of my enjoyment of watching the games.

There are some places -The Aud being among them- where the majority of attendees on any given night are apparently there just to pass the time... I'd be fine if those folks went bowling or something instead, and the crowd consisted of many fewer, yet truer fans of the game.

(Nice to see that the ushers are actually making people wait for the whistles to mill-around, though... Big improvement there.)

Merry Christmas to UC fans and haters alike... Hope Santa treated you right!

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

I would not say D3 hockey is a "very small-time sport" at all. Ever go to a woman's volleyball game, men's cross country meet, men's baseball or women's tennis...now for the most part, THOSE are "very small-time sport" compared to a lot of D3 Men's hockey programs.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

The sports you referenced are pretty-much invisible on the national-level, aside from D-1 men's baseball and D-1 women's volleyball, which each get some token/low-ratings coverage from ESPN, and no mention at all anywhere else... D-3 baseball/volleyball (either gender) are about as obscure as they could possibly be.

Face it: there's no attention paid to D-3 hockey on any national outlet whatsoever... Doesn't mean that it's not a very fun sport to watch, but there are very few admitted "sports fans" who know where Norwich, Utica or Eau Claire are even located, let-alone that hockey is played there.

Lay off the eggnog on this one.

Myself, Ray, and Oswego/Norwich alum Brady Farkas (worked at Norwich, broadcasted at Oswego) will be carrying all 4 Pathfinder Bank Classic games on WPNR (UC games) and milxr.com/wpnr907 (non-UC games)

Hope you tune in!

That's one hell of a star studded broadcast lineup!

Can't wait!

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Brady Farkas? Wasn't that the name of the bully in A Christmas Story?

(Boy, I wish that movie had been shown this week sometime, :D)

Will there be enough oxygen in the arena to power the Steve Levy Press Box? Add to that the WNYO crew and WTOP10 crew - the media may outnumber the patrons!!!

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Thanks for the great reception on that, guys!

Also, just received word that Gordon Ceasar will transfer to Plymouth State, leaving Utica with the following depth at goaltender:

Therrien
Zelzer
Taffe

I heard from an extremely reliable source that he wasn't happy to see Zelzer start ahead of him earlier this season.

(I don't fault him for that, but Marcus is clearly the more talented 'tender of the two.)

Good luck to Gordon, in any case... I'll be watching his stats at Plymouth.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Good chance UC will play Oz Saturday, I might make the trip.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Gordon Ceasar starting in net for Plymouth State against #15/11 Amherst this afternoon.
