Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Michigan also played several non-regulars that game as well. No one is trying to "minimize" a win. It's nothing to be ashamed of anytime you beat the US-18 team (as was said), but this isn't an act of god. We've seen several DIII teams beat the US 18 team after the US 18 beat up perennial DI teams. I'm sorry you don't want to realize that the win over a Michigan "reserve" team was more of a stroke of luck, but so be it. A good win for Utica (that means nothing) but trying to compare it to Michigan is apples and oranges, but if it makes you feel better hat's off to you.

1. Michigan doesn't have a "reserve" team, last I checked...

2. The U-18 team has but one kid who has yet to drafted, and I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Michigan has (significantly) more than one guy who fits that description.

3. You are merely trolling here -as per usual- to pee on Utica's parade for whatever convenient reason is available, even if there's no reason available at all... You really should strive to find a better use of your time than that. (Maybe stamp-collecting..?)

4. I have no doubt whatsoever that you'd be jumping up and down if Platty had beaten the USDT, and please don't even bother to concoct some argument to the contrary, because it won't fly with anyone with an IQ exceeding 60.

Agree about Zelzer. I actually felt bad for the kid that he wasn't recognized at least as one of the three stars. He made a lot of huge saves.

I've seen Zelzer start but three games, yet IMO he might be the most athletic goalie UC has ever dressed. I would like to see him playing in tandem with Nicky; he's certainly earned the ice-time.

Goalies who play a boring style frequently are your better goalies. They rarely get caught out of position and control their rebounds.

See Martin Jones of the LA Kings, he looks like he isn't even trying but has made sure that the King's stay at the top of the West while Quick is out. He has a 5-0 record, a .99 GAA an a .967 save percentage and I don't think he has made one single highlight real save in those 5 games.

My favorite NHL team, Colorado, has an example of this. Varlamov is exciting to watch and very athletic but he does have a tendency to create trouble for himself by getting out of position, sliding all over. Giggy on the other hand has some pretty stellar numbers in his 9 starts and looks like he is just standing there most of the time.

They look boring precisely because they are always in position. Having to make a spectacular save usually happens when they are caught out of position and then scramble back to stop the shot. Of course every goalie will have to do that, but the ones that do it less frequently are the ones that are the most effective. It's just like in baseball - the outfielders that constantly are diving after the ball and making spectacular catches often are not as good a fielder as the guy who can just get to the spot and catch the ball.

the win over the U18 team was a good win.....even if they were not crazy about playing a D3 team, they have sooooo much talent they play well without motivation, and after seeing a few periods of the game and a ton of hitting/fistyness,I think they were out to win............nice win Pios:D

Yup, although Giggy got hung out to dry a couple of times last night.

Yeah the AV's are struggling with consistency lately after their hot start but I never figured they would be right at the top of the Conference at any point so I am happy with the season so far.

Not to hijack this thread, but it seems like they have been letting down in the last 10 min of the third period lately. Gotta play the whole 60 minutes and not give up the tying/winning goals the way they have been. Big turnaround this year.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

I think it is OK to talk about Colorado in the Utica thread because Matt Hunwick played two games at the Aud recently after playing one game with the AV's earlier this season, so there is a connection there. We wouldn't want to incur the wrath of the Fish after all.

Or the stench. :p

Tell ya what: being in position is indeed a key point, but that alone counts for absolutely nothing if the puck goes in anyway. (See: Therrian v. Hobart and Morrisville.)

Just for fun, allow me to introduce some actual facts: Zelzer wins the GA comparison 1.6 to 2.1, and the save % comparison .941 to .926... (Marcus can "flop" all he wants to with those numbers, am I right..? He was forced to dance-around v. the USDT team because they moved the puck so well, but he made the saves.)

I'm not singling you out for criticism, Prof, but I have to wonder if any of your ilk of astute interlopers here have ever seen either of UC's goalies at work... I'm betting that none of you have, at least not to the extent that you can possibly have an informed opinion on this topic.

To address UC followers: Nicky has played quite well over his career, but I think that Zelzer has earned more starts than he's be awarded so far, and even deserves a 50/50 rotation. He's evidently UC's anointed goalie for '14/'15, and that much-younger team will need him to be ready to take over a game or three next season.

Any other Utica fans agree/disagree?

Since you quoted him, it certainly appears you are singling him out.
Most reasonable people would see NUProf's comments as generic and regarding a particular goaltending style, not in reference to any particular team or keeper. Conspiracy theorists, however, seem to take umbrage whenever possible.

But Prof should know better than to make such comments on UTICA's thread!

Agree. According to the roster, the difference is 2" and 20 lbs., but Zelzer looks so much bigger than Therrian on the ice which obviously helps for a goalie as long as he can move and react which he does quite well. I can see why he was a D-I recruit.

You win DIII hockey games with good DIII hockey players. You win DIII championships with good DI hockey players. Heenans no Mr. softie. If Zelzer continues to play like he did in the U18 game he'll be getting more starts and maybe even take over the #1 spot. Don't get me wrong. I think Nick is a great goalie, but this is college hockey and you play to win. If you want to win you play your best players. It's a nice problem to have I guess, but I've never been a fan of switching goalies from game to game. I can see it in the pros where the season is so long, but not so much at this level. Even the pros usually go with 1 guy once they get to crunch time.

Which sort of explains the Western run of success in recent tournaments.
