Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Hey, a real miracle on ice would playing in a surface that hasn't yet been built ;)
When I was up at Placid, I went into the '32 rink to see where Clarkson could not stop Cornell's undefeated season. It is NOT an impressive rink.

It was built in the 1920s. It was superficially upgraded for the 80 games but was left to bear its original look.

I don't know if it was the challenge, the NHL scouts in the stands, or what, but UC played (IMO), their best hockey game of the year tonight. They hit and finished checks like I haven't seen all year and were all over the ice except for about a 5 minute stretch in the 2nd period when they couldn't get it out of their end. Very impressed with the entire teams play, especially goalie Zelzer who continues to play very well when given the opportunity. Yes it was an Exhibition but still a great win for the team's mentality riding into the Xmas break.

Cool, they did DIII proud :)

.

A win over the US-18 is always good, don't get me wrong, but let's not kid ourselves here. Michigan was in clear control of the game until a minute left in the third period when they put Dwyer in net who let in 3 goals on 4 shots.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Remy is correct on the Michigan deal, Dwyer never played a second in the Michigan net up until that point.

The U18 games are interesting because the D3 teams really get up for the chance to show they can play with D1 caliber players and I bet it is hard for the coaches on the U18 team to get the boys motivated to play what they perceive as a weak opponent. Of course they usually find out that they underestimated the d3 team and they find themselves in a game. Last year in Oswego Thatcher Demko and a pair of weak goals let in by Oswego's goalies was the difference in that game after the US dismantled Cornell the night before.

But they're kids, seventeen and under, not twenty something years old, quite a diff. Don't try to minimize the win, please.

Yes two late goals to tie it but Mich was outshot 28 to 21, pretty good against the #3 team in D1.

Michigan also played several non-regulars that game as well. No one is trying to "minimize" a win. It's nothing to be ashamed of anytime you beat the US-18 team (as was said), but this isn't an act of god. We've seen several DIII teams beat the US 18 team after the US 18 beat up perennial DI teams. I'm sorry you don't want to realize that the win over a Michigan "reserve" team was more of a stroke of luck, but so be it. A good win for Utica (that means nothing) but trying to compare it to Michigan is apples and oranges, but if it makes you feel better hat's off to you.

I don't live and die with the UC team like some here, I go to a few of their games if Colgate isn't home. I'll ask you a question though, and be honest, If Plattsburgh beat the USA under 18 team, would you be happy, be honest, all I ask.

And, even if they played some non regulars, they are still D1 players, supposed to be better than D3 players that can't play D1 ? Just asking ?

Any DIII hockey fan who isn't glad Utica won over the U18 team, simply isn't really a DIII hockey fan. I am not under the illusion that the U18 coach dressed his best players - he shouldn't have, nevertheless, he assessed the caliber of his competition and dressed the team he felt best with - a team that deserved playing time, training/experience and that he could WIN with - he know the results would tatoo his schedule. The win is great for DIII hockey and hopefully an experience for both teams.

BTW, this isn't the US under 17 team.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

Winning against a team you are expected to lose to is always a big deal. I am not trying to minimize the win for Utica but I don't think it should be overblown either. Utica showed once again that D3 is a good brand of hockey, at least as far as the top teams are concerned but Adrian has beat the U18's before so it's not a groundbreaking win.

As a Michigan fan, I think Utica would really give them a game and depending on how UC's goalie played might even beat them. Michigan is a team that plays their best against top competition and they would no doubt treat Utica with very little respect. Michigan gets really sloppy and lazy against lesser teams which is a big reason why the U18's beat them, they also lost an exhibition to Waterloo (a .500 team in CIS).

And sshablak, you are right the U18 team is a bunch of 17-18 year old's, the fact that it is news that a team of 21-25 year old's beat them says a lot. Also Michigan is the second youngest team in D1 and many of them are only 18 or 19 themselves.

Again, it's a good win for Utica and something D3 fans can be proud of but I just don't think it will do much to change the perception of D3 hockey to non D3 fans, they will look at it more like a failure by team USA than a success by Utica, fair or not.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

The U18 team the Crème de la crème of 17-18 year old's, it is a fact that it is news that a team of 21-25 year old's beat them, it says a lot.

Great summation. I think it was the best 60 minuets they've played in a long time. Good crowd considering the weather. Loved the USA cheer after the U18s scored the 1st goal. UC was relentless at both ends of the ice and very physical when they had to be. Slowikowski had his best game in a UC uniform in his college career IMHO. Those 2 big hits in the 1st period set the tone. The 2nd period when they couldn't get out of their end was the only blip and seemed to be because the Educate line got stuck out there on a long change. I can't believe Zelzer didn't get 1st star. Hell, he didn't get any!! Who picks those things anyway? The U18s got beat by RPI today 2-1, so all in all I'd say it was a great win for UC and DIII hockey in general.

Re: Utica College Pioneers '13-'14 = Lewiston or Bust

+1 Norm. They did DIII proud!! Please tell me they cheered for Team USA when they scored as well? They are Team USA!

They did because Alex Tuch from Baldwinsville,NY (~63 miles from Utica) scored USA's lone goal. He had a very large contingent of friends and family in the crowd.

Agree about Zelzer. I actually felt bad for the kid that he wasn't recognized at least as one of the three stars. He made a lot of huge saves.
