USCHO Poster's Poll: '16-'17

Re: USCHO Poster's Poll: '16-'17

I was trying to follow the precedent established: pick an arbitrary stat, use it incorrectly with inaccuracies, extrapolate like crazy, and then act like you've proven something.

Hey, without east/west discussions, you would be reading nothing but posts about whether Minnesota's bench players are really glad to be there or really, really glad to be there. Or the Wisconsin pep band.

You got me there. I'd rather have an E/W analysis over most of the topics. OTOH, the Wisco' band is darn good, so I can see why the fans would like them there more often.

Totally fair evalutation IMHO.

I am hoping that Dave will help me here, this is really his area of expertise but it seems to me that the Wisconsin band relies on brass to produce volume. The Minnesota band has slightly less brass but a strong woodwind component to produce a more full orchestral sound while still being well within the pep band spectrum. Wisconsin band=volume. Minnesota band=music.

It is open to anyone's personal preference which approach is more effective as a "pep" band. I like a good band playing either one of those styles and always enjoy the Wisconsin band whenever I hear them at Ridder. I prefer the Minnesota band.

Happy to oblige.

Re: USCHO Poster's Poll: '16-'17

If you combine these two things, it explains why almost all of the top teams' scheduled opponents have a current record under .500. St. Lawrence has 14 of 32 regular season games against teams that have a winning record at the moment. (Note: your initial calculation was wrong, because Minnesota, like St. Lawrence, has only 32 regular season games this year.) Colgate has 11 of 34. Quinnipiac has 15 of 34. Cornell has 13 of 29. Boston College has 10 or 11 of 33, depending upon who they play in the second week of the Beanpot. Northeastern has 8 or 9 out of 34. Clarkson is the only team I found that makes it to half of their games against teams with winning records, at 17 of 34. Given the first problem I mentioned, it shouldn't be a surprise that ECAC teams are consistently the closest to playing half of their games against teams with winning records, since they have 11 remaining conference opponents after removing themselves, rather than 8 (Hockey East) or 7 (WCHA).

And, to demonstrate the sheer absurdity of trying to judge things by how many games a team will play against others that are over .500, if you measure it tonight, Minnesota is up to 14 out of 32, and all of the ECAC teams lost at least two.

Or you could say the top 5 teams all had to play teams with a winning record last night and most did not win.

The WCHA is the elephant in the room (at least for Eastern folks). You can talk all you want about stats and whine about so called schedule avoidance. At the end of the day, the WCHA has almost all the national championships and that's the bottom line.

All but one! :)

I concur with this analysis. Plus, some bands just overblow the music and lose all quality of tone.

There's also a question of how many percussionists travel for playoff games. If you use a marching battery, that's 4 people (snare, bass, multi-tom, and cymbals). Some bands reduce that to 1 or 2 by using a drum set instead, allowing for 2-3 more brass and/or woodwind players.

You music people! :D The only notes I can read are usually found on a Post-It, so I'm just talking about entertainment value, and IMO, the UW band puts on a good show and adds a lot to the atmosphere.

I'm not attempting to compare them to the Minnesota band. If I did, the loyalty factor is going to serve the UM band well in a comparison with anyone else in women's hockey, because they show up on Sunday even when they've spent Friday night and all day Saturday doing Football and men's hockey. :)

It may be true that some brass bands may just be brass for volume's sake, but BC's marching band was (and is) very, very brass heavy (there are no flutes or clarinets, for example, the only woodwinds are piccs and saxes) but had a reputation for being very strong musically. There's something to be said for an orchestral sound but another to be said for a powerful, brass heavy sound that's done well. Think John Philip Sousa.

I am willing to accept that Wisconsin's band is just bad :)

Oof... Good question.

Let's go with mid-day (before any games) Friday. That'll give people a chance to put in any changes after the holiday.
